Zutara Headcanons in chronological order
After the Agni Kai, Zuko and Katara share a room and a bed because they don’t trust anyone else besides each other. They take shifts keeping watch until morning comes and they find themselves cuddling.
Zuko is generally the big spoon but he also like being the little spoon because of the way Katara plays with his hair.
Katara never tells Zuko he mumbles and purrs in his sleep.
Zuko and Azula become bffs after the war. Katara is the one to heal her because she can relate to her and her feelings of abandonment
Azula and Katara become so close they are like the sisters they never had
Zuko and Katara constantly flirt with each other with varying degrees of success
Shortly after moving to the fire nation for her ambassadorship, Zuko finds the order that his father declared to kill the last water bender of the southern water tribe.
Zuko takes the order and builds a memorial for Katara’s mother Kya where the order is framed with a large text underneath that says “we cannot change the past, but that is why it is our duty to change the future. All sacrifices made through this fruitless war will not be in vain. We will be better. We have to be.”
Zuko and Katara secretly search for Ursa and while they travel, they cuddle each other for warmth.
When they find her, they share their first kiss.
Katara proposes to Zuko because he was taking too long!

Katara is the most accomplished Queen the Fire Nation has ever had and her genius always fascinated everyone she meets
Katara takes on more than any queen before her and is seen as an equal to Zuko rather than an inferior
Katara focuses most of her time on expanding and increasing the quality of education in the Fire Nation. Because it is her belief that all problems stem from the inequality of education for different social classes.
Zuko and Katara have a large family with a bunch of kids because they want them to have the experience of sharing a bond like Katara with Sokka and Azula with Zuko
Their children are all treated equally regardless if they bend or don’t
Each of their children are trained in weapons and combat from Sokka, Suki, and Zuko.
All of their children are all super close with each other and love each other unconditionally
Their children have a super close knit relationship with their cousins.
Katara and Zuko love being parents and are damn good at it too!
When Zuko tells the Story of how they met he always starts with “before I get started I just want to say my wife is the most intelligent and compassionate woman in my life… which is why I have no idea why she picked an idiot like me.”
Zuko and Katara take their family to Ember Island regularly and watch the heavily revised “The Boy in the Iceberg” at least once a year
Zuko always begins and ends the day with a kiss from his wife
These headcanons can be mixed and matched into different AU’s. They aren’t necessarily exclusive to one post Canon. And I would also like to say that these HC are vague because explaining what each background is for certain ones would be extremely long. But ones such as “Azula being healed by Katara and becoming best friends with both her and Zuko” is a long and arduous process that doesn’t just happen overnight.
That being said, there are some things that I absolutely will not budge on in future fics in the atla world 😂
Katara being referred to as lady of the moon. I came up with this title after a long thought out process. One reason being that I don’t think Zuko would ever want her heritage at a waterbender- not to mention the last southern waterbender to be pushed aside as if unimportant. That is a strong part of her identity and to invalidate it would be doing a huge disservice to her character. However the title is far more purposeful in symbolism than simply that. If anyone wants an in depth explanation let me know!
Azula’s redemption. This is also one that has a lot of components that I think would be really interesting to explore. It would give her character a whole other Evelin of humanity and and understanding of where her anger comes from. Also, a lengthy explanation that will actually be explored in a fic I’m writing. TW it’s dark
The fire nations monument to Kya. I just always felt like that arc was unfinished and lacked true closure. The southern raiders was wonderful! But I think Kataras grief was too strong to be concluded in one episode. There were still so many unanswered questions. And while I do think that TSR gave closure. I think it only gave closure to a specific piece. I think there are many other pieces that should be explored. And the idea of Zuko truly putting up this monument would be a huge stride and strong message to the purpose of Zuko’s regime.
Zutara’s large and equal family (lots of kids.) I just know they would be great parents and I actually think Zuko would end up being the one to keep asking for more kids. He sees them as mini Katara’s, and he thinks the world would be better with more tiny versions of his wife’s influence… He loves his wife.
Not a Headcanons posted in this post, but Toph calling Zuko Spice king and spiciness is a must. Come on, Sugar Queen and Spice King? Sweetness and Spiciness? Mom and Dad? Just kidding on the last one. The material is right there.

This bit of art has been receiving a lot of attentions quite lately, so I’d like to tell some detailed stories behind this pic.
It was around 2008 when the preview for ATLA’s season 2 was held in Korea. Jae Myung Yu(of Studio Mir), who is one of the animating directors of atla and Korra, had to attend the event as well. Since he was going there personally, he wanted to give Korean fans a special present, then there came this poster.
Since the guys in alta were young kids, he drew this thinking how they would look like if they were a bit older. He said he drew them around 2 years older than original characters (So basically, Zuko - 18, Katara 16)
The burnmark on Zuko’s shoulder, happens to be a mistake as he was in a bit of a rush to complete the poster and was REALLY sleepy. Mr. Yu thought Zuko had gotten a burnmark on his shoulders too when he had Agni Kai with Ozai when he was a kid. Later when he checked, Zuko had clean shoulders lol.
So I suppose we could see it as fanart of an animation staff’s au. The universe where Aang and others are a bit older and Zuko has scars on his shoulders too.

i love the idea of them meeting without knowing the identity of who behind the masks. and they was kind of rivals but then helping each other. ahhhh these kind of tropes sold me all the time. they’ll make a powerful end game.
Sokka is, objectively, not the father figure of Team Avatar. The majority of the time when Sokka tries to be any kind of 'father' or leader figure, Katara endlessly mocks him for it because it comes off as clumsy and misguided more often than not. Can't exactly blame him, though, the one person who should have been an example to him had to leave him behind to fight in the war. Sure, Sokka does have a few moments where he comes up with ideas and shows he can be the leader he's meant to be, but that doesn't make him the father figure. It sure isn't consistent enough for him to be counted as such, not as often as Katara is made to be the mom of the group by the narrative. It doesn't help that no one on Team Avatar looks up to him in that way.
The one time you might be able to point to Sokka acting 'fatherly' to anyone might be Toph in the Runaway, but to me, it comes off as more of 'big brother here to explain to little sis why mom acts that way.'
Sokka is the silly older brother of the group. And considering Katara (the designated mother of the group by the narrative) has to take care of him just as much as she does the others, calling him the father of the group does her a disservice and I can't help but feel is laced with misogyny.
If anyone is the Father of the Gaang, it's the one person Katara doesn't have to mother, and it's not Sokka.
Only one person had an excellent role model for a father figure for him to copy throughout the entire series, and it was. not. Sokka.
zuko is the type of husband to be so sad when his wife leaves for another ambassadorial post or mission…………like he tries to hide it and put on the Bravest Good Boy Face he can muster when katara’s airship flies away from view but he is actually thrashing in the inside……..spiritually……….mentally………….he sees any body of water and everything in his body starts to Twitch…………he sees any woman with blue eyes or a long braid or even just sporting a blue wardrobe and He Sighs………Something is missing……..Something is not right……..Where is Katara………need katara……….where is wife……….wife wife wife…………he does try not to be clingy - but he hoards every letter from her, and he sends his own like he has no second to waste………….this is genuinely no time to be aggravating the fire lord, and every noble has learned that The Hard Way - a wife-deprived fire lord is no joking matter…………..the katara withdrawals…………..it’s as feared as an incoming thunderstorm
