"i want to work on a hobby but i wont because i should be doing more important things" <- person who isnt gonna do either of those
we used to say 'pics or it didnt happen' and if you were lying you'd be screwed. but liars can show me a picture now and i dont know if its real. i dont know i dont know i dont know i dont know i dont know
thinking about how in my other beloved detective murder mystery story Murder on the Orient Express, one of the problems in figuring out who killed Cassetti is the fact that everyone on board had a motive, because Cassetti was cruel and careless and destroyed so, so many people without even noticing most of the damage he did.
like, that's the tragedy of MOTOE, that one bad person can ruin so many lives.
and how in The Residence, one of the problems in figuring out who killed Wynter is the fact that a ton of staff members have motives...
but not because Wynter was cruel and careless, he WASN'T. he was hard-working, dedicated, loyal, meticulous, professional, honorable, and above all motivated by a deep, deep love for the place he worked. every motive everyone has for killing him is, ultimately: he's a good man who wants to do a good job.
that's the tragedy in The Residence, that being very good can get you treated exactly the same way as being very bad.
(especially when you're an elderly black man in a position of moderate authority whose commitment to excellence has made you the household rage sponge)
Cordelia's eyes coincidentally landing on a clock the first time Lilly's name is ever mentioned The Residence 1.01 The Fall of the House of Usher

BONUS:
everyone switching to calling Cordelia “Ms.” instead of “Detective” when suspicion shifts to them god this show just gets it
I haven't seen it talked about (as there seems to be only a little discussion of it on here so far) but one of the things I love love love about The Residence is that she gives up on the investigation.
Cordelia Cupp, world's best detective, who solves the unsolvable, gives up... because she prioritizes the reputation and livelihood of a man she respects and who respects and supports her in turn. Chief Dokes knows that continuing to pursue the case will mean the end of his career, but he says nothing... until she asks. She asks. She knows that there are consequences to her dogged pursuit of the truth, she asks about them, and despite the fact that Chief Dokes is willing to accept those consequences, she says "I'm not."
In a genre that is often characterized by detectives who keep pursuing the case to the ends of the earth - consequences and fallout be damned - I am desperately in love with this character who is blunt and clever and justifiably arrogant and still shows such compassion to those who support her to say "I will not ask this price of you, even if you're willing to pay it, because what you built your life around is more important than finding my answer."
We have multiple anecdotes through the series about her obsessiveness and indefatigable pursuit of her goals and unwillingness to give up until they're achieved, and yet she will not throw over Chief Dokes for the sake of seeing this thing through.
man i have GOT to do this thing. *doesnt do it*
man i REALLY want to do this thing *doesnt do it*
it's the Instagram picture that really blew it, according to Tyler.
It was a simple enough shot. Tyler Owens, sitting on an ER examination table, a pair of blue-gloved hands holding a needle and thread near his eye-- one of which boasted a growing purple shadow and was decorated with decent-sized gash. Tyler, of course, was caught in an expression somewhere between a wince and a grin, one hand thrown up in a thumbs up to the camera.
The other hand? Attached to an arm thrown around Kate Carter's shoulders. Kate Carter, also propped up on the examination table, staring at the camera wholly unamused, mud and bits of hay caked down the front of her ribbed tank and jean shorts.
But she's listing right, slightly into Tyler's chest, and her hand rests on his knee.
Boone captions it: someone forgot to wear his harness. Kate thinks he's an idiot. Ty thinks she's great. (even when she's yelling at him.)
no because tyler doesn’t even look back at the tornado after he sees the pure joy on kate’s face?????? I’m???????
there’s a perfect cloud formation behind him (his words!) that he was just screaming his lungs out about, and all kate says is ‘it’s gorgeous!’ and tyler turns away from the clouds and goes silent and watches her instead. all of this despite observing perfection (his. words.) in the sky moments before.
because kate’s radiating the very same joy and awe he feels. kate’s letting herself feel the thrill of the chase and the beauty of the storm again, and tyler’s entire world narrows to watching the beauty of the sky through her.
he doesn’t even give the clouds a parting glance. he just chases her back to the truck.
like how. how did anyone leave this movie feeling normal about these two together. HOW.
And then when she says ‘let’s go’ and starts running to the truck… he runs after her with SO MUCH JOY.
Like the joy on his face as he follows her and the amount of excitement she’s showing for the first time in a long time?
SPECTACULAR. Gimme 14 of them now!
This is what always gets me about that scene!! He looks at her like he finally found someone else who understands how he feels about mother nature's dangerously beautiful creations. He sees her joy and is in awe at how much she's just like him in this way. Their shared level of insane passion for these natural phenomenons is something that can't be found in just anyone, after all. Tyler's team is wonderful and I love the Wranglers so much, but none of them share the level of obsession that Tyler has like Kate does. Throughout the movie its clear that they all share their parts in making content and helping people out, but when it comes to the storms? Most of it is on Tyler. Then Kate comes along and matches his freak and he can't help but be drawn to her. The first time they go stormchasing together is also the first time he's seen her love and passion for tornadoes up close in a more positive light (considering their first time experiencing one together was less than ideal lol and then there's the convo in the barn), and that man was so captivated by Kate being mesmerized by the storm. If there was any scene in the movie in which you could place exactly when he fell in love with her (because it's obvious that since the beginning he was interested and that he cared about her, but love specifically) it would be this. This scene in which he sees her, the person she is underneath the weight of the past she carries -- the woman and the little girl inside of her who's first love was the weather and built her entire life around understanding it -- and suddenly the perfect storm behind him doesn't matter so much as the realization that he'd follow her into any raging storm out there so long as she asks him to. Heck even if she didn't ask him, he'd be right there beside her.
