Okay, so I'm rewatching Kinger talking about Scratch and I feel like a few details are interesting and really point to the SOMA theory (the theory that the cast aren't real humans but brainscans of humans).

Mainly, the brain tumor.

Brain tumors, to me, are some of the scariest forms of cancer. Based on where they grow and what they press on, disrupting the nervous system, they can cause sudden personality changes. If you or a loved one have no idea that there is a tumor, it's like the person has been replaced overnight. Interestingly they can also cause hallucinations.

Kinger also mentioned that Scratch was trying to build something. What if he was trying to create an AI that would replicate him, just without the tumor? Even without the hallucinations and personality change, brain tumors can cause severely painful headaches, balance issues, and issues with hearing and seeing. It would also match the game the theory is mentioned for.

But there's also the idea that Scratch wanted to "cure" himself, or at least create a world where he was cured. I think it's interesting that he's mentioned as the first abstraction, as well as having the tumor. We know abstraction can be caused by Caine adding too many modifiers to a person. Maybe Scratch, still dealing with the issues of the tumor, tried to figure out a fix with Caine, but too many attempts and too many modifications killed him.

Scratch is really interesting in the way he haunts the narrative.

The Motives For One's Humanity

The toys' motives were to reach out to the prototype for leadership and a new form of their own humanity. He, in turn, provides that, but his own deep motives for helping these experiments are all to get to Poppy. Everything he does is for Poppy. The team requested that I create an illustration that was in reference to the 'The Creation of Adam' that coincides with Poppy Playtime. I had a lot of fun painting this hehe.
