i cannot believe toto wolff is actually a government project specifically designed in a lab to meet every single one of george's daddy issues guys i was just joking....

just really thinking about toto wolff saying in 2019 that motorsport is more honest than business at times because "the absolute truth of the stopwatch will tell you whether you've done a good enough job or not" and then six years later george russell publishes an essay in which he talks about how when he was a young kid his dad would purposely delay the stopwatch to add time to george's laps to make him think he was doing more poorly than he was. thinking about how in that same essay he talks about when he started getting involved with mercedes and with toto and emphasizing how that relationship was almost like a relief in some ways because they made it simple. thinking about the specific conversation he mentions took place with toto a year or so after he signed with them where he was feeling unsure about his future and where toto told him that all george had to do was perform, and he would take care of the rest. thinking about how even in interviews in his rookie season when he was in the very back of the field in that godawful williams george was telling reporters he wasn't worried about it because "the people that will make a difference [...] know exactly how [he's] performing". coming back to the beginning of this i'm thinking about this summer with all of the contract rumours and also how george said in the essay that he doesn't worry about it because he knows if he performs, it will work out because at the end of the day, it's transactional and it's a business.

does the fact that it's business make it more or less certain. does the stopwatch lie or doesn't it. is there a difference between performance and potential. does it even matter in the end when really it's just about whether or not you're winning.
