Just A Bit of Everything Terrible:

Okay, everyone! I know that call-outs get a bit of a mixed response here. Some people think they’re necessary, while others think it causes unnecessary drama. However, this is one instance where this person needs to be outed for what they are. What are they? Well, I’ll let you be the judge of that once I’m done. It honestly hurts me to do this, because this was once a good friend of mine that I made in the BATIM fandom. Hell, my bendy from the old ask blog (Trendy) was in a ship with one of her’s! But now…she’s nothing but a curse on not only my but our mutual friends’ memories. Her most recent encounter with us, which was what was the final straw for me, caused me to have the first bout of nightmares I’ve had in years. So, here I sit, enraged and exhausted, and ready to go.

Just a warning: This call out is going to talk about the following, in no particular order of severity: Faking an attempt at suicide for attention, making fun of sexual harassment/assault, manipulation/guilt-tripping, threats of rape against a minor, threats of slander, and general toxic behaviour. I will place this under a cut (mobile users, I apologize, this is gonna be a VERY long one…)

support content creators. this isn’t instagram or twitter. simply liking is not enough and isn’t seen by anyone but you. it’s just not enough. not when no one sees it. stop letting peoples hard work go unnoticed. stop contributing to art dying on the creators blogs. this also goes for writing and basically any other art on this platform. if you liked it, please share it. it takes about the same amount of time and i assure you, seeing a reblog makes a creator much happier than a like.

i’ve been in the fandom for a long time - 4 years long - and when i first got here, reblogs were way more of a thing than they are now. I wish I could pull up receipts of really old posts that I’ve seen (gifs and graphics and fics alike) that got so many more reblogs than likes. for some reason or another, things have shifted. when i tried to start putting out my writing 2 years ago i thought that everyone just hated my writing and was giving me “pity likes” because i got like, 12 reblogs on a fic out of 200 notes.

obviously we’re putting out this content for free, people are consuming it for free - there’s no obligation on bloggers to signal boost or reblog or whatever. but it is encouraging, and nice. and if you like the content - consider reblogging it. it’ll encourage the creator who made the content you enjoy, which will probably motivate the creator to make more of the content you like - a happy cycle  :)

Just more evidence from two of my posts. I’ve noticed about a 1 to 3 ratio…for one reblog there’s 3 likes. This is one of the reasons I’ve been feeling very discouraged & disheartened about continuing to gif bc it seems to me I’m not making the content that’s worthy enuff for peeps to reblog. I know we do this for free & as a way to express ourselves creatively but we’re also human & do have the desire to feel valued & validated ya know😥

i’m….not sure you do though because no one is saying anything about their careers here and are merely expressing frustration at the fact that we do these things for free, without any expectation and all we ask for is that if you happen to like the content you see, give it a share, let other people you know see it. without content being shared, tumblr will die a much quicker death than people realize. artists/writers/creators in general are jumping ship because they feel undervalued and soon, our dashboards will all be void of content.  @starsmish hit the nail on the head by saying that we do this to express ourselves creatively but we are also human and like to feel valued by the fandoms we are creating for because if it’s not being seen, what’s the point?

we’re not here to ‘get a career’ via tumblr. if you want to be blunt about it, we’re here to get some goddamn validation.

we’re fledgling and at times nervous artists, writers, gif makers, and graphic designers. most of us don’t have a career in anything close to this - if we did, we’d probably be exhausted from spending hours doing that skill and aren’t as likely to do it here. we’re data analysts, students, secretaries, full-time parents, unemployed. we’re here to see if our art would be received by an audience at all, and if we’re any good at it. we’re here to test the waters, see if maybe we COULD make a career out of this stuff if we really tried - or at the very least, a side hustle.

so yeah, a reblog is pretty freakin’ important. it shows us content creators that people like what we’re doing, and that it’s worth showcasing to other people.

This has nothing to do with a career??? It’s about the fact that we did something, something that, most of the times, we’re proud of and we post that thing online to show it to others and it feels good to, like @starsmish said, have some kind of validation that our work doesn’t totally suck?

This is why I only use my Likes section as a bookmark to reblog later! I see no point in liking a post just to keep it to myself, with no intention of reblogging it. If I like a post I’m damn sure gonna reblog it so that the people following me can see it too and can reblog as well.

PLEASE READ. WILL NOT HURT TO AND FORWARD. Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you’ll never make it!!!

If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well. Don’t pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc. Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc. Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this.

i found one in my back yard, when i let my dogs out, i pulled them back inside, took my cousins bb shotgun and shot it from a safe distance (i was in my house and shot from the screen door. When it went off, my family and neighbors came running to see if everything was ok. I told them what happened and to watch out for them.

but why is reposting BAD?

i thought i’d make an faq filled with every excuse in the book about reposting, for those who still don’t understand why it’s bad…or for people who don’t know what to say in retaliation to these! so here we go. 

first of all, an artist doesn’t even NEED to explain themselves. in the same way with someone who says “dude, make sure that soda is diet” or “please don’t tickle me”. they don’t want you to do it. you don’t need to test them by ignoring them. the reason doesn’t matter: it’s the person’s wish with THEIR things. if you had any respect for others, you’d just take it at that. 

BUT for some people, they don’t want to respect others at face value, and want their reason. (which, i might add, is rude.) so let’s get into that: 

but i’m giving you exposure! isn’t that good?

no. 

you’re not giving artists exposure. for people like myself, freelance artists, you’re hurting us. about a year ago, i sent my portfolio off to an indie game. in it, i had a piece of work that had been reposted (that i didn’t even know about). i was told much later that they “looked into it” and saw that my work was posted by someone else, which means now they have no idea who the artist was, and THEREFORE can’t be sure my work was legit. i lost a potential job to a repost. 

doesn’t matter if you say “i didn’t draw this”. sometimes, they don’t even look. they just look to see if it’s on any site other than your own. and that’s terrifying for artists. so don’t endanger our livelihood for instagram likes. 

besides, you’re not even giving exposure if you didn’t credit, cropped out the signature, or somehow made the resolution so low to where you can’t even see the signature. which brings me to…

but i credited you!

some people still don’t want it reposted even with credit. the last answer should show you one of the many reasons why.

and it’s MY art you posted. you can’t take something i did and do whatever you want with it. imagine if you took someones drawing, photocopied it, and spread it all around the town without their permission. they’d have every right to be angry, right?

but you posted it online, which means anyone can do anything with it. so if you don’t want it reposted, don’t post it online!

i have to post my art onto my websites to build a fanbase, something crucial to an artist. it shouldn’t be on ME to not post it in the first place, it should be on YOU to not repost it. you’re just echoing victim-blaming arguments.

WELL THEN SPEAKING OF THAT, since i can’t put your work on redbubble and sell it for myself, why do you have an umbrella of the starry night?? huh?? you STOLE van gogh’s work! (yes people have legit said this to me) 

putting my work on items and selling it is totally illegal. van gogh’s work is owned by companies now, who have authorization to print it on things. and i’m just ONE freelance artist who is, you know, still alive and not giving permission to do that. you can’t compare a dead artist from the 1800s to a digital artist in 2017. apples to oranges, my dude.

well i SAID “credit to the artist” so i DID give you credit!

because saying “the artist” really tells people who i am and lets them visit my websites! thank you so much! 

but all sarcasm aside, that doesn’t do anything other than show you were too lazy to find the artist. same thing with “source: the internet” and “who drew this xD” or misspelling my url on purpose or putting the credit under a cut. OR cropping the image to cut off my signature! you didn’t give me credit.

take down your video with stolen fan art. take down your entire fan art twitter account. i don’t care “how hard it was to save those images” or “how many views you have now”. you got all that attention from someone else’s hard work. searching for art will never be as hard as making it. if it were that easy, you’d be drawing all the art yourself. 

but i asked the artist and they didn’t say anything! i assumed it was okay. 

yeah, i feel you. it’s the same thing as when you ask your mom if you can borrow some money, she doesn’t answer, so you just steal it from her purse. no answer means the answer you want to hear, right?

wrong. don’t take “unresponsive” as a yes. that’s disgusting. 

well i honestly don’t care. artists are just selfish. i’ll repost their art if i want to, just to show them how much i hate their stance on reposting. and (insert another really edgy statement here from someone who only says things to get a rise out of people since their life is empty) 

one day you’re gonna come across an artist who has no chill and wants to sue, and can actually do it, since some people put their work under HEAVY copyright. and i’m gonna kick back in my chair with a nice capri sun and watch it all happen, since you have that kind of attitude towards people. 

yes, this whole thing seems a bit. well. “salty”, as some would put it. and i have every right to be irritated over this. all these questions are asking “WHY should i respect their wishes? give me a reason” or “but here is my excuse rather than just taking it down”. time after time, artists are villainized just for telling people not to repost. 

like i said, the artist not wanting you to repost it SHOULD be reason enough! we’re so tired of having to fight people just to have respect for our art. we have to deal with tracing constantly, so can you please take reposting off our plates? i know bad things will always happen, but that’s no reason to make it worse by contributing. 

artists are generously putting our art out there for free. if you want to keep seeing our art for free (btw we don’t HAVE to, all the big artists could just up and leave and go to patreon), maybe show us some respect? because we get pretty dejected when we see strangers getting attention from something we did, and it makes us want to remove everything we show you guys. you say “don’t post it then!” but would be mad if all fan art disappeared. 

if you want to keep the art, respect the artist making it. there’s a real person behind that drawing.
