The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2016 has been announced and it is… ‘post-truth’! Post-truth is an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief’. 

The concept of post-truth has been in existence for the past decade, but Oxford Dictionaries has seen a spike in frequency this year in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States.

Post-truth has gone from being a peripheral term to being a mainstay in political commentary, now often being used by major publications without the need for clarification or definition in their headlines.

Post-truth may be the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2016, but the shortlist has a wide range of words which have had an impact on 2016, for better or worse. Alongside glass cliff, woke, and alt-right, the following words reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the past twelve months.

A week has passed and my urge to cry and then vomit has waned. It took a week of christmas music and not watching, reading or listening to any post election coverage for this relief.

This photo boosted my excitement and hope as the results came in on election night. As night turned into early morning this photo made me immensely sad. Here was a representation of American women past and future watching what was suppose to be history, Hillary becoming president. I felt we let down those women who came before and those little girls watching as a strong qualified woman lost. Looking at this photo I now see hope and that there is still work to be done.

We might not have elected them but we are their constituents. They represent us and we must keep them accountable. Help safeguard and build on what has been accomplished these 8 years. Get involved in local and state government. Volunteer or donate to organizations that help women, children and those seeking a better life in the US.

Just as I was filled with pride when I voted for Hillary I am still proud and impressed by her grace and class in defeat. She has shown what a wonderful leader she would have been and reminds me we are stronger together!
