not to tell people what to do but as someone who’s been in fandom since i was like twelve, i promise that the only good fandom experience involves limiting your friend circle to, like, seven people. when you’re in a city, you don’t make friends with every douchebag on the street. stringently vet the people who are allowed to influence you. in an age of people and companies constantly demanding your attention and energy, your happiness will grow best like flowers in a greenhouse in a terrible city; a contained, curated space allows happiness to flourish. keep it small and don’t be sorry to tell people to stay the fuck out of your greenhouse.

it actually is super important to “write for the audience you want and not the audience you’re afraid of.” because if you do write for the people who would hate your work if you didn’t bend over backwards trying to cater to them, inevitably you are going to have more of those people engaging with you and your work than you would otherwise. you have every right to explore how YOU feel in your own work and every right to target one audience over another, so don’t try and impress people you don’t want anything to do with. it’ll hurt you in the long run, in more ways than one.

i prefer "please don't do this" (warning) slightly more because it acknowledges that, at the very least technically, the person issuing the warning has as much of a choice in what happens next as the other person. it makes them equals, rather than blaming one person and denying the other's free will and power of self determination. and i just find that moral grey area a lot more compelling.
