I know a lot of people have been upset about this one, but the truth is that the show does center on lessons that most people learned in kindergarten and then forgot as they grew up.

Ted Lasso as a protagonist is so important to me.

Our media is full of protagonists who are remarkable for their drive and their intelligence and their strength and their knowledge and their grit and their beauty.

And when you’re entering adulthood and you don’t feel especially driven toward anything and you’re squarely in the average on smarts and you can’t lift more than like fifty pounds and you don’t know jack shit and you’d rather nap than persevere at any given moment and you’re just not that good looking…. you just keep thinking well if I’m the protagonist of my life I’m not a very good one.

But Ted Lasso is different. He transforms the world around him without being remarkable for anything. Except one thing - he’s just deeply and constantly kind.

And he’s not even perfect at that! There’s a lot of moments in the show where he fails because he lacks insight or context, or even because he’s not 100% consistent at practicing kindness.

But at the end of the day, the thing that matters is that he tries to approach everything with the same mentality: don’t assume you know what someone else is going through, do what you can for people (even when it’s hard), and forgive them when they don’t do the same for you. Trust people. Look for their good qualities. Be patient. Be kind.

When you’re starting out adult life and you still don’t quite measure up to any of the extraordinary people on tv, there’s one person who you can just. choose to be.

Anyway I wanna be Ted Lasso when I grow up.

i have so much respect for Ted Lasso’s writers cuz like

the show featured two friendships between Ted and a deeply cynical, jaded person who through their contact with Ted (and because of his kindness, his forgiveness, his ability to see the upsides of their downsides and their good sides too) became a believer.

that’s two friendships where he commented repeatedly on their physical attractiveness and intelligence. two friendships where they were silly and warm together. two friendships where the other person seemed to have a special kind of faith in Ted and what he could do at Richmond.

and considering that one of those friendships was with a gay man, they had every opportunity to queerbait us.

but no. they heterobaited us instead.

david’s yelling for her. she’s on her feet immediately, book fallen to the floor. she’s running to the front of the house as fast as she can.

“YUNA!.” is he hurt? no he looks fine. oh god is shane hurt? no - david would have taken him straight to the hospital and called her. so shane’s probably ok. did his cottage burn down or something? is there a wildfire? a hurricane? no that makes no sense.

“What?!” she exclaims. “David, what is it?”

he’s out of breath, and he’s too in shape for it to be from running up the driveway. no, this is panic. oh, god maybe shane is hurt somehow.

david opens his mouth, wild eyed, and manages to gasp out, “Rozanov?”

oh god, he’s having a stroke.

I love that Ted Lasso s4e1 showed a drumline at the Kansas City Current game.

I grew up watching soccer mostly for big events and mostly on tv, because I live somewhere that didn’t have a team for a long time. I basically only saw premier league and world cup games, so I didn’t experience any of the drum culture that exists in many places outside of England.

Fast forward to the first game I ever saw in person and…. there’s a drumline for some reason?? For about five minutes I’m confused. Then the home team goes on the attack and the drums start sounding like the soundtrack to a War. There’s a drumroll during a penalty kick. People in the crowd start clapping along to cues I don’t understand. I’m now convinced all sports should have drumlines, actually.

Anyway go watch local soccer/football games there’s cool drums.

and another upside of centering Ted Lasso 2: Electric Boogaloo on a women’s team is there’s gonna be so much potential for wlw fanfiction!!

mainstream media and fandom have both gotten better about developing interesting female characters who have interesting relationships with other interesting female characters over the years, but a lot of the media and fandoms I personally engage with have still remained pretty male-character dominated. even this show hasn’t had much wlw material to work with beyond Rebecca/Keeley.

the Richmond women’s team is about to be my wlw renaissance.
