You have to understand that orthodox economists are not scientists or scholars. They are the priestly caste of a market society which fills the exact same role as scholastics did in the thirteenth century Latin West. The purpose of the orthodox economists is not to understand the world as it is but instead to produce knowledge which justifies the extant social order. The baseline assumptions of orthodox economics are ahistoric and predicated on the atomistic liberal understanding of the individual as a rational actor. They have no meaningful bearing on reality and are not intended to. They simply need to provide and maintain a structure of justification for the exploitation and domination of the working classes and colonized peoples of the world. Just as scholastics intellectually justified violence in the name of conversion and crusade, so too do the orthodox economists justify violence in the name of capital accumulation.

Like. Not to keep harping on this but. I’m reading a paper about the “creative economy” in British Columbia and like. The author draws on a heterodox strain of economic which more or less is heterodox because it posits that the state does, in fact, play a role in shaping the economy by permitting and regulating the commodification of labour things which are not actually commodities (labour, land, and knowledge). In essence, the heterodox thinking here is “sovereignty is real.” That’s what puts this theory at odds with *checks notes* almost every modern economist. To be an orthodox economist you more or less have to believe the state is subordinate to the economy and not vice versa. This is, in my view, completely incompatible with any doctrine of sovereignty. Which is funny considering. how often capitalists lean on the state to exercise its sovereignty in order to protect their interests at home and abroad. If the economy is master over the state then why does the state need to intervene to keep the economy functioning every few years? Why does the economy, if left to its own devices, start huffing its own farts so hard it explodes on a like. Pretty routine ten to fifteen year cycle? Why does orthodox economics seem to be constantly blindsided by the crisis tendency of capitalism???? Absolute. Fucking. Tools.
