„Atta Troll. Ein Sommernachtstraum“ is an epic poem by Heinrich Heine, written in 1841 and published in 1843 in the journal „Zeitung für die elegante Welt“. It was never completed. Illustrations by Willy Pogány (from the 1913 edition by Sidgwick & Jackson, London).
Atta Troll is a dancing bear who escapes captivity and returns to his den in the Pyrenees. Plagued by longing for his still captive wife Mumma, Atta Troll speaks to his six cubs about the guile and evil of mankind and the servitude of animals. Atta Troll plans a revolution: to abolish the rule of foul profit and to found a “just animal kingdom” (”Ein gerechtes Animalreich”). Heine uses the bear character to mock both conservative and progressive, authoritarian and liberal ideas. Atta Troll believes in a creator deity in the shape of a colossal polar bear, but also preaches that property is theft. Atta’s cubs parody German nationalism. To his mother, Heine wrote that Atta Troll was a “satire on ideas of liberalism in general” (source).
