Anyone who is anti-nuclear is anti-environment. Nuclear is safe, it is clean, and it is even more energy dense than fossil fuels. It might not be truly renewable, but there’s so much energy available that it doesn’t make much of a difference. To try and shut it down is to put down one of your strongest allies in the fight against fossil fuels.

Everytime this comes around again, I remember that there was a push to refit coal power plants to run on nuclear, due to the fact that other than the power source, your still just boiling water so everything else is the same.

They couldn’t get the ok to refit the coal plants tho, because the coal power plants were too radioactive to pass nuclear power plant standards.

One of the greatest lies that recent American history has perpetuated is the idea that Rosa Parks was "just a tired Black woman who wanted to sit down on the bus" and not a motivated activist who trained with other civil rights luminaries and very intentionally got on that bus specifically to get arrested about it.

Can you think of a reason why they might not want you to know that the people staging sit-ins and getting arrested for sitting on the bus were trained and organized?

it's really interesting how on tumblr at least most people i come across will understand and agree with the premise that corporations not receiving hypothetical future profits they wanted or expected is not equivalent to theft in any meaningful way, but can't really extend the same logic to works made by individual creators. and I understand that this is primarily because these individual creators are operating on much slimmer profit margins than, say, The Disney Corporation, but that doesn't actually change the mechanics of what is happening in these situations. pulling a random drawing off the Internet and using it on the character sheet for your DND campaign instead of commissioning the artist isn't theft like ordering a commission and refusing to pay for it would be. printing off a drawing by an artist you like on your home printer instead of buying off their shop isn't theft like snatching it off their artist alley display would be.

I really think the poster child for the over-reverence of the Small Artist's Sacred Right To Profit is closed species. which for those of you who don't know is when an artist or group invents a fictional creature with an associated setting and lore and then you are forbidden from creating any original characters of your own that are this species or live in this setting. you have to buy or commission a design from the creator and if you don't you'll be essentially blacklisted. these types of communities are notoriously restrictive and cliqueish. can you imagine a more miserably hostile and extractive way for an artist to monetize their work? in this scenario, what is one of the most common ways that people online engage with art they like - getting inspired by it and making derivative works if their own - is completely off the table unless you pay for the privilege of doing so. this is the kind of financial relationship between artist and audience you're advocating to be legitimized when you go to bat for the necessity of ip protections.

The EU wants to implement an even worse legislation called Chat Control, in which a trained AI will scan every single one of your messages and photos before they're even sent. They want to destroy end-to-end encryption and scan every single one of your messages in the name of "child protection" from predators.

They want to end privacy with the excuse of protecting children, giving them the possibility to utilize this legislation for far worse. From political expression to free speech, this legislation could put an end to all of it. Everybody in the EU will be affected. You, your family, your friends, your personal feelings and ideas. They will see everything.

"ace people can still have sex" and "aro people can still be in relationships" are objectively true statements. this is because people can do whatever the fuck they want forever regardless of their label/orientation. however some of you have GOT to get your shit together and stop using those statements to undermine larger conversations about aspec identity. following up "ace people don't owe you sex in a relationship" with "ace people can still have sex in a relationship though!" is not fucking helpful! yes it's true. yes it's a reality for many people. however if we used our fucking brains for a second and thought about how following up "people don't have to conform to societal expectation" with "but people can still conform!! don't worry they can still conform!!!!" is counterproductive and very frustrating for a lot of people then we could get back to the actual point which is not "aspec people can still have sex/be in relationships" but "aspec people can do whatever they want with their relationships and their bodies". which they can, by the way. they can do whatever they want forever. and you should give them 200 dollars every time you see them for dealing with this shit

To be clear, I don't have any news about any impending doom. But I've heard a bit more about what's going on with staff after the layoff of last week, and there are even less people than I thought still working here.

I don't think even the current staff know what's going to happen, but honestly, I don't see how the high ups could even pretend to intend to keep this place open while virtually unstaffed.

In your blog settings you have the ability to initiate a blog export, and this will generate a backup for your blog.

Fair warning though, if you've been on the platform for a long time this archive is likely to be quite hefty in file size. This blog I have had for 5 years with 22k posts, and the export from tumblr came to be 48GB. My previous blog I made in 2011 and has 95k posts, so needless to say I did not use tumblr's built in export to back that one up.

If you want more control over exactly what you back up from your blog, I recommend that you use tumblr-utils instead. It allows you to backup specific tags, post types, and to ignore posts that you did not create (reblogs where you've added a comment count as a post you created, to be clear).

To use it:

download and install python 2.7

download tumblr-utils

create an application on tumblr to get an api key

extract the tumblr-utils zip and open the tumblr_backup.py file in notepad

search for "API" and paste in your OAuth consumer key

then go back to the folder where you extracted tumblr-utils and choose open folder in terminal / command prompt, or type cmd.exe in the address bar while inside the folder

now in the window that opens it should show the current path, and you can type "py -2 .\tumblr_backup.py [your options] [your blog name]" and hit enter. Example:

Backing up just my original posts from this blog with this command came to 632MB rather than 48GB, and also gave me the option to save my posts in JSON format which will be useful for converting my posts to a new format for self hosting.

On that note I'm currently looking into figuring out a simple (and ideally free) way of self hosting a static site blog that utilises activitypub, and also converting my old posts to re-host on said blog.

This post series by maho.dev on implementing activitypub with any static site is my primary source of guidance atm if you also want to try figure that out yourself, as well as having an explanation for why you'd even want to do this if you don't already know

but if tumblr goes down before I get things sorted and write up a post about it then i'll be reporting back on it via my bsky, mastodon, and toyhouse accounts

if you dont have an account on any of these I'll also be sharing an update via my personal site's RSS feed, link of which includes an explanation of what RSS is and some feed readers you can use, I highly recommend checking it out as getting a feed reader is going to be the best way you can stay connected with people if they scatter across the internet!

tldr: download tumblr-utils to backup your blog more efficiently, introduce yourself to RSS and get a feed reader to stay connected with people, consider saving mine so you can find out how to self host your blog later if tumblr goes down

some music i have made

these were made:

cssaa_3 & help2.25 - sometime in 2023/early 2024

SEARnSHINE1.4 - mid-late 2024

timesigs - yesterday

these are all normalised, but cssaaa_3 and SEARnSHINE have a multiband compressor on the master track, while timesigs only has a limiter that was put there to tame the drum transients (specifically so volume normalisation would work on it) and help2.25 has a completely empty master track.

the compressed songs are slightly quieter decibel-wise, but might still sound louder than the others because of this.
