MEAN GIRLS 2004 | dir. Mark Waters
DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: After a long and hard search, Marvel has found its Ms. Marvel. The studio is tapping newcomer Iman Vellani to star in its Disney+ series based on the comic-book character. Marvel and Disney Plus recently named Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon as directors on the project.
Marvel had no comment.
Ms. Marvel hails from writer Bisha K. Ali and centers on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen based in New Jersey. Ms. Marvel first appeared in 2014 as Marvel’s first Muslim character to star in her own title, and she will become Marvel Studios’ first onscreen Muslim hero. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said that in addition to appearing on the small screen, Kamala Khan will be included in future Marvel films.
The plan always was to stay true to the character in finding the right actress to play the role, even if it meant offering a person that was not well known to the public.
Marvel and Disney+ have been hard at work setting up their development slate in recent weeks by not only setting Tatiana Maslany to lead its She-Hulk but also giving Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character his own series. The studio also announced that WandaVision would be the first show to premiere on the streamer later this year.
Though this marks Vellani’s first major Hollywood production, she has already made tries in trying to help diversify the industry. At the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, she was part of the Next Wave Committee which was tasked with adding a special tag to films — already programmed into other categories — which they believed would resonate with their peers.
So the US presidential debate must have been pretty bad tonight. 💀
Reminder to Americans: It can take years to legally move to Canada, especially with COVID and the border being closed to most Americans (with potentially massive fines on top of being deported if you lie to get in). We aren’t US-lite and Americans don’t get preferential treatment when it comes to immigration just for being American—you have to join the queue with everyone else.
Also Canada isn’t the Utopia you all think it is. It only looks ‘good’ because we compare ourselves to the USA all the time (even in cases where Canada is objectively worse than the USA). Better than the USA isn’t actually a good benchmark for progress or equality.
All of this is Canada and all of it happened in the past 24 hours:
Every systematic problem America has, Canada has too (income inequality, violent racism, misogyny, LGBTQ discrimination, etc). We just hide our bigotry a bit better.

My Mother’s Garden
The garden lasted a few months. Then, an agent of the town’s housing authority found out about it and told my mother it was against the rules. “But no one’s using the land,” I remember her arguing. “The kids in the neighborhood play there.” The response was clear: Get rid of the garden or be evicted. Here was another one of those impossible choices of poverty. This was what my classmates would never understand, as they earnestly debated welfare fraud and the grasping desperation of the undeserving poor.
My mother stopped tending the garden and the next weekend a maintenance worker came and poured something onto the soil that made all the plants die and turned the grass brown.
it’s really august huh… like 8 whole months have passed……….. disgusting
i made this for a powerpoint party but the rest of the world needs to see it
@laurelcanyonblvd
This is like looking into the mouth of madness
This is accurate as fuck
I shared a version of this to my Facebook page and so far the list has been:
-speaking more than one language
-Owning an old car
-Having kids
-Thrifting/Flipping furniture and other “DIY” projects
-Tiny houses
-getting money from the government
So much of our daily lives is sold and packaged to us as something people of certain classes can do or shouldn’t do. It’s fucking ridiculous.
-cooking your own food is seen as a sign of “worldliness” if you’re rich.
Please sign this petition to make forceful removal of Hijab a double charge: assault and hate crime
“We are asking the Government of Canada to make a change and to make this blatant hate crime illegal for the safety of muslim women in Canada.”
