What the fuck, Alysanne?!
This is going to be long and rambling.
So, I'm analysing parts of Fire & Blood concerning Viserra for a fic, and something just blew my mind. I'm afraid I cannot comprehend it.
Alysanne arranged a match between Viserra and Theomore Manderly. I always knew that match was horrible. Viserra was the most beautiful of Alysanne's daughters. I doubt she was pleased with a match to an older, four-time widower, who already had an heir and a couple of spares. The prospect of spending the rest of her life in the North was also probably not something she wanted.
But it just hit me how much older Theomore must have been. Viserra was 16 when Alysanne arranged the betrothal. I always thought Theomore was 40 or 50 at most. But now I'm reading more carefully, and fuck, he must have been older than that.
Theomore had four wives and a couple of kids. One of his daughters, Jessamyn, was Alysanne's cupbearer during Alysanne's visit to the North in 58 AC. We don't know how old Jessamyn was at the time, but Rhaenyra became Viserys' cupbearer at the age of 8, Daeron was sent to Oldtown to be Lord Hightower's cupbearer at the age of 12, Aegon II offered the position of his cupbearer to Rhaenyra's son, Viserys, when Viserys was around 8 years old, Aegon the Younger was around 10 when he became his mother's cupbearer, and Tywin was also around 10 when he was sent to King's Landing to become cupbearer.
Let's assume Jessamyn was 8 years old when Alysanne came to White Harbour. That would mean she was born in 50 AC. If Theomore was 12 when she was born, that would mean Theomore was born in 38 AC. He would be 49 AC in 87 AC when he was supposed to marry 16-year-old Viserra.
I always assumed that was the case.
But Jessamyn wasn't Theomore's oldest child. He had at least three sons. He also had at least one more daughter. Once again, we get a bit more information about Mara Manderly. We know that in 55 AC, she was the queen's companion when Alysanne was pregnant with Aemon. Let's assume she was 12 at the time. That would mean she was born in 43 AC. Again, if she was born when Theomore was 12, that would put his date of birth to 31 AC, which would make him three years older than Jaehaerys.
We don't know the ages of any of Theomore's sons, but we know that one of his great-great-grandsons, Medrick, was a fearsome man and one of the finest knights of the North by 130 AC. The younger great-great-grandson, Torrhen, was older than Kermit Tully, who was born in 112 AC.
Considering that 12-year-olds do not have children all that often (even in Westeros), I think it's safe to assume that Theomore Manderly was born much earlier than 31 AC.
So, the question that I keep asking myself is, what the fuck was Alysanne thinking when she arranged this marriage?
I really try to be fair when I'm analysing Fire & Blood and put the more outrageous fan theories aside, but I can't help but think this marriage was a punishment. It brought very little to House Targaryen. Even if Viserra married Theomore and they had children together, their son would not inherit White Harbour. And the marriage itself had an expiration date. Theomore was old. If Viserra didn't die and married him, she would probably waste her youth in the North only to become a widow at 25.
Once again, what the fuck, Alysanne?
I know this is probably GRRM not thinking about details like the ages of minor characters, but these mistakes lay the ground for interesting dynamics between characters in fics and crazy fan theories.
