still teasing out what makes phm catnip to me and boy whatever they put in Bucky Barnes, some spilled over in Ryland Grace's vat.

the amnesia. even if his old life comes back to him piece by piece, there are gaps, however temporary. personality waits on no one, it develops and fills the cracks and the person that went under isn't the person that woke up 11 years later anymore.

grace is still kind, curious and funny, he is still a great teacher, but even before he meets a Whole Ass Alien and almost dies on multiple occasions, there is already a branch-off in his life. the old memories can only fit so well on top, because there is now a fresh scab of fear and grief on his soul. he was hunted down and forced under. for 11 years things were done to his body and he was unable to do anything about it. he wakes up with earth's fate on his shoulders and he can't remember his name. It's unimportant, because he was meant to die from the start. there is a mission to complete.

Thinking about how Rocky was seemingly already waiting when the Hail Mary entered Tau Ceti's orbit. Rocky must have detected it coming, worked out what that meant, and calculated where it would enter. He had to have been there before Grace even woke up, slowly watching this spot of light grow brighter than Tau Ceti. He knew to position his ship blocking the Petrova Line to ensure it would create a silhouette on the Mary's light sensors because the Petrova frequency was the only thing he knew for certain the aliens could detect. Rocky was so prepared for this.

When did he spot the Hail Mary? Did he notice it by accident, or was he mapping distant light emissions for lack of anything better to do? Was he planning this meeting for years? Did he try to signal it before it entered the star system? Did he have that 3d star map prepared in advance? Did the Hail Mary feel like a dear friend before they met in person?

Much to ponder.

I was thinking about Project Hail Mary and I thought of this conversation that definitely happened on the way to Erid:

Grace: "It feels weird to call your planet by a name humans gave it. I know I can't pronounce the real name but can you tell me what it means?" Rocky: "Rocky will tell Grace, but first Grace must tell Rocky meaning of 'Earth'." Grace: "Well, uh, it sort of means 'ground'." Rocky: "Boring!" Grace: "Okay smart guy, what's your planet's name mean then?" Rocky: "..." Grace: "..." Rocky: "..." Rocky: "Ground."

I keep thinking about what Stratt's reaction must’ve been when she first started watching Grace's logs. As in, his very earliest logs, where he'd be this dead-eyed shell of a man saying he barely remembers who he is or what the mission is and he's all alone surrounded by corpses and can you imagine.

I don’t think the movie ever clarified it, but she gave him that amnesia intentionally to ensure he wouldn’t sabotage the mission (which he threatened to do, by the way). She was relying on there being two other people around to get him up to speed. And instead she finds out he was all alone, from the start, with no idea why, lacking the support he needed to save the world. Did she have a moment of thinking all those logs he sent wouldn’t contain the solution at all, but just be the diary of a spiraling man losing his mind in space?

And then, Rocky.

One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.

"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.

"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid

If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.

If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.

Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.

But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.
