the morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains, bathing you and the room in a gentle warmth. the mattress cradled you as if it was molded to your shape, while the blankets held you in a comforting embrace. sleep enveloped every fiber of your being. you felt so well-restedâŚalmost too well-rested. eyes still glued shut and mind still fogged over with sleep, your hand sluggishly reached for the nightstand, fingers blindly brushing across it until you grasped your phone. you pulled it to close to your face, squinting as your eyes adjusted to the brightness. blinking slowly, you read the time
âwhat!? itâs 10:30 already?â you shot up in a panic, the remnants of fatigue immediately leaving your body. your boss was going to be livid.Â
but before your feet could even hit the ground, your husband walked in. calm and composed, he greeted you with a soft, âgood morning, darlingâŚâ and gently pressed a hand to your chest, easing you back onto the bed, much to your dismay.Â
âsuguâ, iâm already lateâi need to get ready,â you blurted, stress creeping into your voice. It made his chest tighten.
âshh,â he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from your face. âjust relax, baby. i already called in for you. youâre not going in today.â he handed you a piping hot cup of tea, his voice a soothing balm against your rising anxiety.
âwhat? why?â you stare down at your tea, dumbfounded.
he crouched beside the bed, his hand finding your shoulder, his thumb rubbing gentle circles into you. âthis jobâs been running you into the ground. I canât keep watching you come home every night so drained. you need a break.â
you sighed, sinking into his touch. he was right.
youâd come home almost everyday worn thin, dragging your lethargic form through the front door, barely mumbling a âhiâ before collapsing onto the couch. most nights, you fell asleep there, and suguru would quietly carry you to bed. as much as he loved caring for you, it pained him to see you like thisâburnt out and miserable. youâd been so overwhelmed, you hadnât even paused to consider how much stress you were being put through.
âshhh,âhe interrupted softly.
ây/n,â he started, firm but tender, âdonât worry about any of that right now. just rest. let me take care of you.â suguru loved taking care of you. not out of duty, but because it brought him genuine happiness seeing you cared for. seeing the tension melt form your body was on of the only things that gave him peace. he noticed the little things. the way your shoulders stayed tense even while you slept. how your sighs had grown heavier over the past few months. he missed your light laughter, the warmth in your voice when you talked about your day. lately, it felt like all of that had been swallowed by exhaustion and he refused to let it consume you.
his strong back and arms flexed slightly as he gathered his long hair into a neat bun at the base of his neckâan effortless, practiced motion.
you smiled, relaxing into the pillows. âdid you turn off my alarm?â you asked with a quiet laugh, sipping your tea.
he smirked at you, ââcouldnât bear to see that tired, defeated look on your face this morning,â he turned towards the door, ânow sip on that and relax, i have breakfast on the stoveâyour favorite.â
your grin widened as you clapped â as best as you could with a mug in your hand â, âi havenât had that in forever! thank you, suguâ. really.â
he paused, then crossed the room once more to cradle your face in his warm hands. he pressed a kiss to your forehead, lingering for a moment.
âanything for you, love,â he whispered, voice like silk. ânow iâve got to goâfoodâs gonna burn.â
a honeyed laugh left his lips as he disappeared down the hall.
and all you could do was stare after him, your chest full.
how did you get so lucky?
