you ever log back into your aro tumblr bcus ur friends said some ace discourse shit in the group chat and u wanna feel aspec for a while, and while you’re there you remove the words “non-sam” from your bio just because of how the world already thinks badly enough of the sam already and even though it’s irrelevant to you, you think it’s a usefull tool and then you scroll down on your dashboard and people have come up with a flag for it in the months you’ve been away and you don’t know where it came from but you’re sad because you realise you never made your jokes about how the non-sam aro flag should look

Um, it's quite embarrassing, but what does non-sam aro mean? I tried to google what it is, I swear! But I still don't quite understand and it bothers me every time I see it and I really want to know

don't feel ashamed at asking!!! i'm more than glad to explain. sorry this took a bit, school’s been a lot.

non-sam aro stands for non split attraction model aromantic.

the split attraction model is used by those who are a-spec to differentiate between their romantic and sexual attraction. for example, someone could be a bisexual aromantic or a biromantic asexual or another LGB identity paired with aromantic or asexual.

those who identify as non-sam aro (or ace) don't use the split attraction model. instead, they solely identify as aromantic or asexual (which is not the same thing as being aroace). the reasons for this are various and often personal, but i’ll share mine specifically.

personally, identifying as a non-sam aro has allowed me to focus on my aromantic identity and personally understand my complex relationship with sexual attraction. i know i experience sexual attraction, or else i’d identify as asexual, but i currently have no name for it and am not wishing for a label. of course, these are my personal reasons, and i would love to hear what other non-sam aros (or aces!) have to say about their identity.
