i’m not saying all kinds of logic are good, i am saying that in order to be empathetic and emotionally intelligent, a certain kind of logic, the logic that says ‘it’s beneficial to everyone if people are in less pain’, is necessary to act on it in a meaningful way. lack of emotional regulation isn’t empathy. being susceptible to manipulation isn’t empathy. being unable to prioritize your own well-being isn’t empathy. making someone tell you about their trauma just so you can say ‘oh no i’m so sorry that happened to you’ isn’t empathy.

emotional intelligence isn’t just ‘guessing what other people want and forcing yourself to do it at your own expense’ or ‘always caving to others’ demands’, it’s being able to weigh your own needs against what you can do for others, it’s understanding a different, even repugnant, perspective even if you don’t condone it. it’s considering your own emotional reactions and choosing which ones to act on and express that would improve the situation for yourself without hurting others. 

you need a strong, consistent internal logic to be an empathetic & emotionally intelligent person. rejecting logic because it doesn’t jive with your emotional reactions is just as harmful as assuming compassion is irreconcilable with rationality. the whole point of feeling things is so you’re alerted to an emotional need, and if you’re too caught up in feeling the emotion to investigate & meet that need, all you’re doing is projecting your shit on other people.
