"This was the very first video I filmed of Jannik, on July 8, 2015. Do you think the fact two years Jannik had won Wimbledon after painful French open defeats speaks to his resilience? The losses in RG were different but both required resilience to bounce back quickly especially last year
my dear anon, to me, it definitely speaks to his resilience. but more than that, i think it offers a glimpse into the mindset thatās helped make him the player he is today.
the 2025 loss was an emotional wound. three championship points against carlos, gone. psychologically, thatās the perfect setup for rumination: the endless āwhat if?ā loop that keeps athletes replaying the same moment over and over again. the 2026 loss was different. it challenged something even more fundamental: his trust in his own body. something like that can make any athlete wonder whether it could happen again. for someone whose game is built on reliability and physical control, thatās a very different kind of challenge from simply losing a match. what also stood out to me was that he never really externalised it. he said the weather was fine and that it was simply him that day. taking ownership like that isnāt easy because it puts the responsibility back on you, but it also means the solution stays with you instead of being left to circumstances you canāt control.
his response afterwards also resembles many of the coping strategies associate with resilience. first comes the speed of his emotional recovery. darren has said that the day after a bad loss, jannik is already calling the team asking, āwhat are we doing? whatās the plan?ā thatās the opposite of rumination. then comes problem-solving instead of avoidance. he openly acknowledged that he needed to recover mentally as well as physically, underwent medical testing, adjusted his heat-management routines and arrived in london 12 days early. in other words, he kept converting an uncontrollable event into a series of controllable actions. you canāt change what happened in paris. you can change how you prepare for the next tournament, so thatās where he deliberately shifts his attention.
what also helps, i think, is the way he thinks about winning and losing. he often says that he plays for himself, not for records or other peopleās expectations. after winning wimbledon, he said that not winning a slam isnāt a failure, that his five major titles are only five days out of thousands of days in his life, and that even losing the final would still have been a good day. i think that says a lot about how he views success. winning matters to him, of course, but it doesnāt seem to define his sense of self. because of that, defeats donāt come across as identity crises , bu become part of the process of getting better instead. maybe thatās also why paris didnāt seem to leave the kind of lasting scars you might expect. where a lot of athletes might experience a loss like that as āiām failing,ā he seems to experience it more as āthat day didnāt go the way i wanted.ā
and thereās also the mechanism he seems to rely on under pressure, which is process focus. after the final, when he was asked how he had managed both to stay so composed on serve and to respond after paris, he almost seemed uncomfortable giving some grand explanation. instead he smiled, said āi donāt know,ā and immediately returned to process: staying in the moment, trusting the work, and the long days of preparation. when talking about achievements, he almost always speaks in terms of āwe,ā giving credit to the preparation he and his team have put in together. thereās a confidence in the people around him, too, and with good reason. heās surrounded by some of the best coaches and specialists in the sport, and he trusts both their expertise and the work they do together. his confidence doesnāt seem to come from convincing himself that everything will work out. it comes from trusting a process that has already been tested countless times. in the biggest moments, there isnāt much left to overthink because the preparation has already done the believing for him.
so yes, i think it absolutely speaks to resilience. but it also says something about the way he approaches the sport. he seems to recover emotionally quite quickly, focuses on what he can control instead of looking for someone or something to blame, doesnāt let results define who he is, and puts his trust in the work he and his team have already done. 2025 tested him emotionally. 2026 tested his trust in his own body. they were completely different challenges, but he responded to both in much the same way. resilience, in the end, isnāt just about recovering from difficult moments. itās about having a mental framework that keeps difficult moments from becoming defining ones.
