“Stop scrolling and please help me spread the word, because if I’ve landed on your page you’re most likely either a black woman or someone who cares about black women and the simple phrase I’m about to share could help save a black woman’s life.
Doctors are to black women what police officers are to black men. That may seem controversial but I believe it to be true and I speak from personal experience.
If you’ve seen this TikTok you know that a 2016 study showed that 50% of medical students and residents thought that black people couldn’t feel pain the same as white people.
And we learned from this video that because of a 1999 study, to this day, there’s a black correction factor for the creatinin levels in black people’s kidneys, meaning we’re less likely to recieve a kidney transplant if needed.
So if you go to a doctor, feel you aren’t getting proper treatment or they refuse the treatment you’ve requested, say to them the following:
I will need you to document on record that you are refusing the treatment (or medicine) I’ve requested, and the reason you are doing so.”
Fandom’s Race Problem and the AO3 Ship Stats
centrumlumina:
After four years working on my AO3 Ship Stats project, and having previously addressed issues of misogyny in this data set, I feel like it’s past time to talk about the elephant in the room:
Fandom is kinda racist.
(Hold on folks, this is going to be a long one… If you don’t want to read all the details, skip to ‘Conclusions’ at the end.)
“…While “shippability” is something I have yet to quantify, the dismal 12.5% minority races in Western media fandom is less than half of the proportion of non-white characters in media overall, and the discrepancy is even greater towards Black characters.
“Fandom has gradually been edging towards greater inclusion of POC, but the pace of change is slow, and there are still huge barriers to overcome. The fact that mainstream culture is saturated with racism and colourism explains these trends, but it does not excuse them; for fandom to make good on its promises of diversity, we must all contemplate the part we play in supporting or erasing characters of colour in our fics and other fanworks.”
An interesting discussion. It would probably take an anonymous survey to find out how many authors hesitate to write characters of a different color or ethnicity than their own for fear of the Scylla and Charybdis of stereotyping and magical minority.
Okay I’m going to start this off by acknowledging that some people do perceive this as a problem, and it does affect their writing choices within transformative works fandom and elsewhere.
HOWEVER. There’s an slightly-inaccurate-but-very-true quote by Kwame Dawes that’s floating around which I think is valuable here: racist writing is a craft failure.
What this means is that racist tropes – the “scylla and charybdis” you mention above are two examples of racial tropes, but aren’t the only ones by any means – are just that: lazy tropes and cliches that expose a lack of imagination on behalf of the author to see or even imagine characters of color beyond the “single story” (see: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s talk on same) that those of us raised in a white supremacist culture are trained from childhood (look up ‘the doll test’ and ‘implicit bias’) to consider “true” or “believable” or “complete” or even narratively compelling…
Yes, it’s a cultural issue; it’s a fault of our media (not enough representation / not enough varied or good representation), but it’s also a failure of personal imagination and a lack of willingness to put the same amount of research and world-building effort into stories about characters of color as we do for white men.
I could list a thousand and one examples of minor white male characters, some of them heroic but some of them downright evil, who’ve been elevated by fandom, whose cannibalistic, genocidal, abusive traits have been excused or even valorized, while characters of color are crammed into the nearest stereotype pigeonhole and given no second thought, when they are remembered at all.
And you know what? That first part is fine. You’re allowed to like ‘bad’ characters. That isn’t the issue here. The point is that white ‘bad’ characters are fandom faves that get woobified and defended, and ‘good’ characters of color are hypothesized to be evil – and then their ‘badness’ becomes a reason to discard the characters of color instead of celebrating them along with the white villainous faves.
Writers fret about stereotypes, yes. Writers should be conscious of lazy cliches and offensive tropes and the whole lot. It’s one of the things that makes for better stories and especially one of the incredible strengths of transformative works fandoms: finding the stories that aren’t being told, the stories lurking within the murky subtext beyond the two-dimensional surface, and telling better stories for ourselves (see also: how fandom adds queerness when there is none in canon).
But when confronted with a cliche of a white man and a nuanced character of color, fandom has proven time and time again that they’re willing to stick their creative neck out and do every bit of work that it takes to add nuance to the white guy, while ignoring it in (or taking it away from) the character of color.
(Incidentally, there are SO MANY resources nowadays for writing characters of color effectively and non-offensively, especially because this is a conversation that’s been happening both in fandom and in mainstream publishing for YEARS.)
What’s worse is that people will defend not writing characters of color at all because they honestly cannot perceive or imagine that a character of color is worth their time and effort. They honestly cannot perceive or imagine that there’s any way they could come up with a story for that character that won’t be a cliche or stereotype.
And that’s not fear.
It’s a lack of imagination. It’s a craft failure.
And it’s not at all ‘transformative.’
While I think Infinity Train did a great job developing Grace and providing her a fleshed-out character arc, she still falls prey to the trend of women of color in animation (and media in general) suffering much more explicitly than her white counterparts AND where her arc doesn’t lead to happy or fulfilling ending, earned or otherwise. Grace’s age could be a factor, as she’s a late teen vs. Tulip and Lake’s 13. Perhaps the creators believed they could get away with more explicit hardships for an older character. But it still holds weight as Tulip and Lake’s suffering and challenges earned them a happy ending, unlike Grace, who lost everything and has more work to do before she’s fulfilled and off the train.
Compare this to Allura, a princess who experiences hardship after hardship, and ultimately must sacrifice herself because the plot demands it. Compare this to the excessive brutalization of Korra, particularly in the later seasons. Compare this to Carmen Sandiego, who suffers two painful near-death experiences on-screen. Compare this to Catra and Mara from SPOP, to Violet from Young Justice. All recent examples in cartoons that continue a trend of WOC having to suffer a plethora more for their happy endings (if they receive happy endings at all). And while I’m thankful these characters exist, each with distinct personalities and motivations, I believe it’s worth asking why writers and creators alike put their WOC through these obstacles, particularly dark-skinned WOC, without receiving much in return.
Redhawk realized his failing vision caused things to morph, so he started to play with morphing software and thought, “What if I morphed an image onto itself?”
“It’s an artistic expression of the confusion I go through with my vision loss…
Not enough data getting sent to the brain, and it tries to fill in the blanks with false information, so you can’t trust what your eyes or brain are telling you.”

Love seeing disabled artists of color!
Hey, so they’re making a Netflix Harry Potter.
With that in mind, we’re all gonna remember that JKR is a terf who has literally been cited by legislators engaged in legislation that actively harms trans people, and we’re not gonna give her any more money.
That means not streaming the new show on Netflix, because regardless of how much influence she has on the production, she gets paid for it.
We’re gonna make the show flop. We’re gonna show Warner Brothers that we don’t forget (of course, how would we forget, it isn’t as if she’s stopped), and that their business association with terfs is no longer profitable.
It is NOT like Lovecraft, because Lovecraft is very dead and his works are in the public domain. By consuming Lovecraft media, you are not giving any money to old Howard.
Autistic Lifehack: Hearing Problems
If someone says something that you only partially understand:
DON’T ask for clarification with a generic “What?” or “I’m sorry?” (In my experience, people will repeat the phrase the exact same way without helping you to understand).
Example: Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “What?” Them: “Do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “I’m sorry, what?” Them (annoyed): “Do you like pahganabasa?”
Instead, DO repeat the part that you did understand, and substitute a “What?” for the unintelligable part.
Example: Them: “Hey, do you like pahganabasa?” Autistic Person: “Do I like what?” Them: “Pineapple pizza?” Autistic Person: (Understands the words!)
I’ve also had successes with “I’m sorry, I only heard the first half of that sentence,” or actually verbalizing my interpretation of the part I heard incorrectly as a question: “Pahgana… basa?”.
Sometimes that makes the speaker think that they might be mumbling, or verbalizing in a way that makes them difficult to understand (because there are times it’s really not your brain–it’s their mouth).
This is also a lifesaver if you have Auditory Processing Disorder. It stopped the amount of annoyed sighs because ppl thought I was deliberately ignoring them or them saying the same thing but louder (which does not help when volume isn’t the problem)
I’ve been known to ask for the exact part I missed. “Third word, last two syllables?” or “Hotel-India-Kilo-Echo or Bravo-India-Kilo-Echo?” among friends who know the Nato Phonetic Alphabet.
i am OBSESSED with this response my philosophy teacher made to my introduction post okay OBSESSED
Tumblr users are often so arrogant and it shows. They can draw a full cast of POC characters but when POC say "Hey we want more than just our skin tone" they're suddenly deaf as shit.
Representation on Tumblr has become a way for white people to win brownie points just because they took a Hershey's bar and slapped it onto a person's skin tone.
The most disgusting thing is that they insist on making JUST African-Americans. They insist on making JUST one facial type, one nose type, one lip type, one hair type, one slang type, one skin tone.
And when they make a person Asian, it's Japanese. And when they make a person Hispanic, it's Mexican. And when they make a person indigenous, they never specify on which tribe/nation they came from, but you'll bet they're Native AMERICAN.
But my favorite part is when other POC demand representation and those same fucking white people are like "But but but look at all my black characters!!!!"
POC isn't just confined to America.
POC isn't just black.
POC isn't just Japanese.
POC isn't just Mexican.
POC isn't just Native American.
It's from the Miskitu in Nicaragua, from the highlands of Ethiopia, from the deserts of Saudi Arabia, from the mountains of Indonesia. It's from the arroz con gandules, from the folk music, from the festivals. It's many cultures blending, it's speaking more than just English, it's dealing with racism unique to our countries of origin.
It's more than just one universal experience, and white Tumblr isn't willing to show that.
Basically for the people who refuse to fucking read
Can you guys do some actual fucking research on anywhere other than whats at the borders of America before you slap a random ethnicity or race onto a character?
Btw: White people PLEASE reblog but do not clown on the post.
Hedge funds shorted more than 100% of all shares of gamestop, to do this that means they had to sell more shares than actually existed.
The hedge funds never actually owned these shares to begin with because they were short selling so they never actually paid for them.
Redditors saw this and decided to buy up all these shorted shares to gamestop a company that wasnt failing that the hedge funds would then be forced to buy back as they never actually owned the shares.
The beauty of this is if you knew what to look for you could’ve seen this coming too. It isn’t mystical, it isn’t magic. They made these billionaires pay back more than what they basically stole by being greedy, this is a good thing.
Let me explain a bit
rich hedge funds have the ability to sell stocks they havent paid for yet that other people actually own and then pay for them after a certain amount of time. they can sell these stocks trade them whatever but they will eventually have to buy them back.
So they shorted gamestop shares from 20 dollars all the way down to 3 dollars, meaning they borrowed shares to then massively sell.
they sold shares at like 20 dollars and then 18, etc. and because when investors see massive amounts of shares being sold they get nervous and then sell their shares which drives the price of the stock ever further down.
so they took something worth 20 that they sold for 20 dollars and all its downward prices and instead of paying for it at $3 dollars they thought theyd CONTINUE to short the market, meaning they kept driving the prices down because apparently this obscene amount of money wasnt good enough.
Redditors who dont say the stock market is magic and mystical astrology saw this very obvious evidence that these hedge funds would be forced to buy back all these fucking gamestop shares and decided to drive the price of these shares up knowing that the hedge funds would then be forced to buy back the shares they have yet to pay for at increasingly wild prices.
what they were looking for was over 100% of all stocks shorted on a company that wasnt even failing or in complete disarray
they used this knowledge to bring stock that was 20 dollars brought down to $3 all the way back up to $140
the hedge funds still have to pay for all of those shares they never technically even owned in the first place which these redditors knew so they held onto these stocks they bought in a company whose shares were oversold.
INSTEAD of acknowledging this they decided to have media campaigns lie and make the stock market look even more mystical and crazy to people who dont know shit about finance so that your average folks wouldnt catch them in the act of just getting a fucking 2 billion dollar bailout for being greedy fucking pieces of shit.
They also dont want your average person to KNOW they do this shit especially when they drive shares so deep into the ground ($3)
TL;DR: Every time you call the stock market magic and mystical and ooo makes no sense, you pretty much allow these motherfuckers to get away with robbery of the average person (given a government bailout is paying for this)
Understanding how these things happen and knowing what to look for allows people to work together and not only stop it but rob back from the billionaires when they pull this shit.
financial illiteracy isnt helpful to anyone.
my point about financial illiteracy isnt to make anyone feel bad it’s more saying you shouldnt repeat the myth that these things dont make any sense especially when something like this happens because very set laws and rules allowed for this to happen and mystifying that only benefits hedge funds who dont want people catching them doing this.
Hi hello yes, OP? Hi, hello... thank you. Holy fucking fuck, thank you. Thank you for explaining what the fuck was going on so simply
I still don’t understand and may need flowcharts
Shorting is when hedge funds sell a stock that they don’t actually own. Basically, Bob borrows Ted’s bike and pawns it. Now Bob, legally, has to return the bike to Ted so at some point he has to buy the bike back. Bob makes money by wagering that the pawnshop won’t be able to find anyone willing to buy the bike and he’ll be able to buy it back cheap, return it to Ted, and pocket the difference.
Now, the one thing you need to the know about the stock market is that it is run by PEOPLE. And people are panicky. It really doesn’t matter how “well” a company is doing if its stock is being sold off en-mass. People panic, think that somebody knows something they don’t, and sell their stock/refuse to buy.
The hedge funds basically bought a very specific kind of bike and pawned all of them. They bet that people would see a lot of a specific brand of bike at the pawn shop and refuse to buy because there MUST be something wrong with that brand right? Why else would a ton of them be in a pawnshop? Better ditch your own right now or risk the wheel falling off or something.
So, Gamestop’s stock is in the toilet and the hedge funds are about to make a shit ton of money.
Enter reddit.
Upon seeing that Gamestop’s stock is artificially low because of hedge fund dickery, one forum decides to start buying Gamestop stock out of spite. Buying raises the stock price. The Redditors raise the price enough that the hedge funds start panicking. The time when the HAVE to buy back the stock is coming due and now it is WAY more expensive than they sold it for. Its like Bob walking pass the pawnshop and seeing the bike’s price is now three times what he sold it for. Bob panics. Bob makes a horrible decision. He complains to everyone about this. EVERYONE.
Hedge funds were on tv whiny and attracted the attention of people who REALLY DON’T LIKE THEM. People like Elon Musk whose company has been targeted by shorting before and has no problem finding the cash to buy the inflated Gamestop stock and have the social media platform to shine an even bigger spotlight on this. Now other people outside of the Reddit forum are joining in because they smelled blood in the water.
Remember, the hedge funds HAVE to buy these stocks back. No matter what, come the due date, they will have to purchase the stocks at whatever price they are listed at if they haven’t bought them back before then. Even if that price is a hundred times what they paid. Basically, if Bob has to sell his house to get that bike back to Ted then that’s what he’ll have to do. Considering one hedge fund required a bailout already over this, its looking like a lot of people will be selling their houses over shorting Gamestop stock.
That bike metaphor is literally the first time I’ve seen the concept of stocks explained in a way that makes any sense.
in movies couples always split up bc one of then wants kids and the other doesnt and then at the end they get back together bc the one who didnt want kids wants them now and that means theyre fixed and normal i hate that

The Outbursts of Everett True was a comic strip that ran in papers from 1905 to 1927, wherein the aforementioned Everett True regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude. Men have not only been taking up too much room on public transport for about as long as public transport has existed, but the people around them have been irritated about it for at least a hundred years. The next time someone tries to claim that manspreading is a false phenomenon, please direct them to this strip so that Everett True can correct their misconceptions with an umbrella upside the head.
I have never before heard of Everett True, but if he “regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude,” I have a strong spiritual connection with him.
I fucking love him
i can imagine this guy’s voice very clearly in my head but i couldn’t put a name to it
He also jabs racists in the eye!
I love the justice grandpa of fists
I’m very lucky to own a book that’s a collection of most of these comics (sadly not all of them) and would highly recommend hunting these down if you can. Sorry for the lack of a scanner but phone photos will just have to do.
He was a enjoyable cuss who didn’t care for war mongering.
Especially profitable war mongering and excuses for it!
He certainly didn’t like selfish husbands and fathers!
Politicians who turned on their words once they got theirs weren’t safe.
He said fuck the police!
He absolutely didn’t like people ruining little things for kids.
He stood up for foreigners. Especially those doing their best to communicate with limited second language knowledge.
He was not having any tomfoolery when it came to gun safety and laws. Especially with youth involved.
You had better not abuse a animal with him nearby. He’d right that wrong real quick!
And best of all him and his wife were both prickly cusses together. Relationship goals.
I have a new role model
“justice grandpa of fists”
It’s nice to see a fat dude in a political cartoon that’s NOT being used as shorthand for greed and corruption.
i keep drawing him woops
