Wanted to do this because I saw it and felt like it!
1. Do you mostly read fiction or non-fiction?
I'd say about 70% fiction and 30% non-fiction, although I read very little non-fiction last year so I'm trying to read more this year. The objective this year is a ration of 2:1 f:nf.
2. Is reading for pleasure part of your daily routine? If so, how much time a day do you spend on reading?
I try to read a bit daily, but sometimes I don't. It depends day to day. If I'm going to work I'll usually read on the bus home for about 20 minutes. I try to read a bit before I sleep every night, it's better than going straight from a screen to trying to sleep. On some days I'll read a lot more, like if I'm off work and don't have anything else to do.
3. Do you often binge books? Describe your average reading session 😁(Do you have a special spot where you get comfortable/is it a hard copy or an e-book/is it day or night etc.)
I try not to binge them anymore, but occasionally I do if the book has me engrossed. My average reading session is just... reading. I only read print books, I don't own an ebook reader of any kind and I don't like audiobooks. If I specifically want to lock in and read I will go downstairs in the living room and sit on the sofa, which also helps in summer when it's very hot upstairs and cooler downstairs. I might have a drink or a snacky-snack, but not often. I require complete silence unless I'm reading in public, then I listen to instrumental music to block out noises.
4. Do you have a schedule or do you read when you feel like reading?
Whenever I feel like it. I don't want it to be a chore, except for this year's long read, Les Miserables. I read seven chapters of that every Sunday.
5. Have you ever struggled with reading (e.g. issues with concentration/retaining information, learning disabilities etc.) and how did you manage to overcome it?
Not really. I have had to train my attention span back into something resembling usefulness, but I've never had any issues with the actual action of reading.
6. Can you read multiple books at once?
Yes, if I so choose. When I was a child I'd have three or four on the go, all kept under my pillow. Nowadays it's usually my main book and a side read, usually a book from childhood I'm rereading. I also haven't DNF'ed a couple of books I've put to the side for the moment (Crime and Punishment and The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine) because I was struggling.
7. If you're multilingual, do you intentionally choose to regularly read books in your target language(s) to maintain language proficiency? Is it a habit too, or is it a matter of the book's original language?
Tbh I should be reading more books in Italian. I just don't own that many that aren't about, like, the Italian Resistance. I'll probably get some when I go back to Florence next month.
8. How do you usually choose books for your to-read list?
Vibes. Sometimes I'll put a friend recommended book on there if I really like the sound of it, but often it's just something I've seen online and think "oh, that sounds neat". I do not follow most Booktokstagram rec lists since they turn out to be garbage. I also just pick up random shit in secondhand bookshops that pique my interest.
9. Do you keep track of the books you've read/plan to read?
Yes. I have two lists in my phone notes app, one for fiction and one for non-fiction, and if I find one out in the wild I cross it off and add it to my tbr. Otherwise I use Storygraph and Goodread and also have a physical reading journal.
10. Do you consider reading manga/comics "reading"?
I do, but I don't consider single volumes of a manga to be "a book", you have to read the whole series for it to count (so Witch Hat Atelier #1 isn't a book, but the entirety of the concluded series is). If it hasn't concluded yet you are still reading it, and have only read it in the past tense when it is finished. With comics it's a bit different: obviously a standalone graphic novel is its own book, but I think for long-running comics it's various runs or single stories (however they are collected in a volume with concrete beginning and end, e.g. Under the Red Hood or The Long Hallowe'en for Batman). It's still reading.
11. Do you often find yourself in a reading slump? How long did your ultimate slump take?
I was in a big reading slump from about 2016 to 2023. I was reading and writing a lot of fanfiction, I was at uni (and anyone can tell you that absolutely kills any wish to read recreationally stone dead) and my mum passed away so for a couple of years I barely did anything at all. I have no doubt that once I find a new fandom to hyperfixate on my reading numbers will take a hit, but until then it's fine.
