More and more organizations understand that data can be a valuable asset, that intelligence can be derived from a variety of data sources, and that analytics of many kinds can greatly benefit decision making, future direction, competitiveness, and innovation. But many organizations aren’t well-prepared to tackle the work that must be done to ensure that data is reliable, timely and relevant.

Privacy guardians in Europe want the ability to erase some online material, known as “the right to be forgotten,” but archivists and historians object.
We had a lot of fun hosting The Noun Project for a Cultural Heritage Iconathon on Saturday! Here are a few outtakes. We’re happy to say that work will continue on a few of the icons we created; look for them on http://thenounproject.com/.
Digital Governance Fails Because We’re Afraid of Cultural Change 1. The internet puts new demands on our content. Customers expect useful, usable content across channels and devices, all the time. 2. Organizations (usually) aren’t setup to deal with this reality. People avoid talking about content because it’s messy, political, and hard to do well. 3. So our content is a mess, and nobody takes responsibility for fixing it. This creates problems for both the business and the customer. It also drives us crazy. 4. Content is important, damnit! It’s a business asset. Content strategy provides a way for us to fix these problems, helping us spread the word about the value of content throughout the organization and around the world.

In 2012, we hosted an event with science fiction writers talking about the future of information. It was a great discussion and this article reminded us of the discussion. On Saturday, we're hosting an event about data visualization http://www.asis.org/Chapters/asistmny/index.html Come and join us!

POP DATA FORUM: May 11th @ 2pm
Join us at the Library Journal Office (160 Varick St.) at 2:00 pm for a conversation about data with some data professionals.
Representations of data are everywhere and seem to be easily available. Data visualizations can inform people’ s understanding of the world and even affect their political engagement. We’ve brought together some panelists who work with the nuts and bolts of presenting both responsible and interesting data to the public to convene a discussion about data, people and how the two work together to broaden worldviews. Our panelists include: Eric Buth, architect of TPM’s Polltracker and current member of the New York Times graphics team, and Ky Harlin, from Buzzfeed’s data team. Join us for an afternoon of chatting about data and people.

New York City Subway Turnstile Data Animation
Read the entire explanation. Here's just a part:
"The data is far from usable in its raw format, and is broken into week-long chunks for a specific control area and also includes running counts for a turnstile at a given time (like an odometer).
