whenever Bruce pisses Dick off during a case as Nightwing and Batman, Dick just goes and changes into his civilian work uniform so that he can pull out a gun in front of Batman and Batman can’t say shit. Jason finds it hysterical.

thinking about a world where jason survived but his relationship with bruce continued to deteriorate and they don't talk at all when he's an adult. curious about a story that fixes his death but doesn't assume that would fix the deep-seated problems in bruce's parenting.

like actually. bruce and dick had a severe falling out when dick grew up but are still in each other's lives because they were best friends, partners, and had complete respect and admiration for each other almost from day one. their relationship persists despite how shitty bruce sometimes is to him because of that rock-solid foundation.

that is NOT bruce & jason's relationship. the biggest problem i see in their relationship, which really rears its head in the issues preceding death in the family, is that bruce doesn't respect or trust jason. he did trust him at one point, but when they start to disagree and drift apart, he doesn't try to understand jason's pov at all, he just assumes and projects and continues to do that until jason is sure that bruce doesn't even want to help him, wouldn't care about the things that matter most to jason, and will leave him in the cold if it's better for the mission. that's not just a misunderstanding on jason's part, that's the message bruce has been sending him. bruce's behavior during death in the family only cement that. when he literally runs into jason on another continent, and for a second jason thinks that he was wrong, that bruce followed him because he cares and wants to help. but nope, bruce tells him it's a lucky coincidence that their separate objectives line up and they can stick together for this. meaning (from jason's pov) if it hadn't, he would've left jason to find his mom on his own or tried to make him go home and abandon the search entirely.

i don't know how you could fix this dynamic without bruce getting a lot more self-awareness and emotional maturity than he ever demonstrated even in his (stronger, more trusting) relationship with dick. not to mention he has alfred the enabler right there to reassure him that any problems he has are the result of jason's inherent criminal inclinations, so he never needs to do any introspection.

all this to say. if jason hadn't died the most likely result to me is that he moves out at 18 (at the latest) and they are more or less estranged. maybe he comes to christmas and thanksgiving and they try to talk about surface-level things but it's fraught.

the two flavours of this feeling are "i think she is flawed and going through it and figuring her shit out and that's a very human quality that i appreciate seeing in a female character" and "i think it's good she killed and ate those people and i think it's really hot that she didn't feel bad about it because confidence is attractive"

Hater thought before bed:

I just saw a TikTok post that said why Jason Todd was doomed to fail as a character - by DC writers and how they write him. Some of the points were okay, but the creator was liking comments that were along the lines of Jason needs to stop acting like Bruce ruined his life and Bruce is a loving parent and cares, that a lot what Bruce does is taken out of context, blah blah blah.

And you know what, I'll probably be the minority in this, but I do agree that there is some merit in the idea that Bruce hasn't done everything that has ruined Jason's life, but there are significant things that he's said or done that with or without context make him look bad. And there are insignificant things that he says - something like telling Jason 'you'll be a detective in no time' when he taught him to be one - where it just makes me think, dude where are you? Do you know who you're talking to? To place it solely on Jason's shoulders when Bruce says and does crazy shit to everyone is weird.

Also, I feel like when people engage in discussions about Bruce and Jason, they reduce Bruce's character and complexity. They can't fathom Batman making a mistake when that's the best part of superheroes: they make a mistake, they own up to it, and accept the consequences. Having him as this guy who can do no wrong and having everyone love him so boring. He does make mistakes, but people have such a hard time accepting when he makes mistakes that harm his family when it's such a common thing!

If you look again under that comment section, you will find me - assuming op hasn't deleted it - Where I leave 3 big ass paragraphs talking about Bruce being a mentally ill bitch unfit to be parenting much less fighting crime (and where I bring up my queens Judy, Gloria, and Catherine) . Very funny to me they seem to easily accept that Bruce has OCD of the moral kind specifically but I bet you if I started arguing the possibility of Jasons inconsistency being explained by psychosis or being medicated vs not they would shut it down with a quickness. Also they were talking about Jason watering down Bruce's philosophy like the specifics don't change depending on the writers' whim, and he hasn't cracked down in it WAY more in the last couple decades. They're ALL fucking inconsistent welcome to comic books dumb ass.

yeah - I said it a few months ago when it was kinda the pinnacle of superbat people and bruce stans flooding the tags: I'm not gonna accuse them of anything based on how they talk about fictional people but the way their defense of bruce frequently paralleled real life abuse apologism was ASTONISHING. from twisting around actual canonical incidents of what bruce did to his kids (especially dick, jason & tho she's certainly not his kid steph) to make HIM the victim somehow to applying the missing missing reasons to any and all instances of his kids being mad at him (why is dick/jason screaming at him? we don't know! it's not important! why doesn't damian feel like he's his father? don't focus on that, focus on how poor bru bru is sad & his kids are mean) to accidentally still making bruce look horrible even when trying to depict him as the bestest daddest ever (what do you MEAN he told dick to shut up bc dick felt insecure about never being adopted/somehow that incident becomes about how meeeean dick is to bruce or screamed at dick because dick dared help out when he was lost in time and took care of damian & then got attached or literally every of their fanon interactions with jason where jason cries in his arms and we're supposed to take that a wholesome moment and not jason getting browbeaten by him & the whole family into adopting their views or the entire justice league enacting physical violence on the kids because they have complicated feelings about bruce or poor Damian/Cass being practically reduced to his attack dogs with no feelings of their own lmaoooo). like I kinda went from seeing bruce as a flawed but well-meaning parental figure to outright hating his guts because of them. and ofc any negative action bruce takes is "ooc" while any negative action that the batkids take towards bruce (and let me tell you, that contingent still cannot come up with too much actual canonical stuff, they have to make it up most of the time) is 1000% real and true and omggggg my poor brucey wucey omega of all time experiencing SEXISM from his EEEEVIL kids. god. kill me. none of them read comics either.

It gets to a point where you can decide that your PERSONAL interpretation of Bruce wouldn't do that and you don't think Batman should have taken a turn like that and you don't want to engage with content depicting abuse. That's fine. Or you like a specific version of Bruce (WFA, BTAS, Golden/Silver age, ect.) And you want to focus on those characterizations! Fine! That's a difference in interpretation and can be solved simply if everyone tags correctly and avoids/blocks the tags they don't want to see. But when it gets to a point where you are looking at the canon panels of him obviously and unambiguously abusing or emotionally neglecting his kids and going "ermm well I don't think Batman would abuse anyone so that's not abuse ☝️". Now we have a difference in worldview where you think abuse apologism is okay if you like the person doing it enough/don't like the person it's being done too enough and EYE think you should be thrown into the dungeon forever and ever amd ever and ever so that real life victims don't run the risk of encountering you.
