Tumblr just celebrated the fact that i have no life
And as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold And if you listen very hard, the tune will come to you at last When all are one, and one is all - to be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
I just wanted to talk more about this picture that took me ages to finish, so I'm gonna explain all the stuff I threw into it under a cut:
This is what this painting is based off! Kali, goddess of death and destruction, stepping on her husband, Lord Shiva, who laid down on the ground to calm her and stop her rampage. But rather than a sword and a head, Xie Lian is holding what he's known for, a sword and a flower, as the Flower Crown Prince. But the sword isn't just a sword; it's Fang Xin, full of Xie Lian's blood(golden, as a god) from all the times Xie Lian stabbed himself and been stabbed, and the vengeful ghosts who want to cause the plague circle around it.
Xie Lian did don the White No-Face mask and nearly caused a new plague. He wore it again, albeit by force, in the kiln, and after defeating Jun Wu's White No-Face, he burst out the kiln by himself. He effectively became a Ghost King then, and fully became king of all three realms - The strongest god in the heavens, the strongest ghost among ghosts, the ultimate mortal (as an Immortal, a Xian) among mortals. But of course, no matter what he is, no matter what he's doing, even at his worst, Hua Cheng finds him mesmerizing; he only wants to smile up at him. And if he can be a stepping stone for Xie Lian to stomp on- that's all he ever wanted, anyway.
Close up, Xie Lian's vaguely smiling on one end of his face and frowning on the other, and on the frowning side, golden tears are falling from his eye. Personally, I found Jun Wu always being the White No-face rather unconvincing; there seemed to be a pretty heavy divide between the talking, taunting White No-Face that was tangible and that others could witness, and the White No-Face that does not speak, that only appears in shadows and hallucinations and in the mirror, and who even Hua Cheng cannot sense. I do fully believe that's a joint identity that both Jun Wu and Xie Lian have, similar to gods in mythology such as Sekhmet, who was the alter-ego of various goddesses like Isis and Hathor.
I threw in a lot of symbolism and references in this beyond that. I originally intended to have Xie Lian be wearing his masks like Kali wears the severed heads, but I couldn't make it look right so instead they drift off of Ruoye, showing off the three different faces Xie Lian's worn in his life. There's a recurrence of the number 3 in the story(three realms, three masks, three trips around the capital before Honghong-er falls, three ascensions, etc etc), which is why he's also holding 3 fingers up on both hands.
The ground is dried up as if a drought had happened, given the drought that's intrinsically connected to what caused his downfall. But at the same time, it's also covered in blood; it's a battlefield. In the background, you can see Mount Tonglu erupting, and Mount Taicang on the other end, with lanterns coming off somewhere just below the second highest peak - the cottage where Xie Lian waited for Hua Cheng.
I also made sure to showcase that Xie Lian is the king of all three realms. He is on the ground of the mortal realm, spirit flames circle around him like they worship him, and merged in with the plague ghosts is the white-gold clouds of the heavens.
And of course, a painting that references religion and picks apart Xie Lian as a god wouldn't be complete without using his bamboo hat as a stand-in as a halo as seen in many, many religious artworks.
What kind of like to kudo rating on AO3 should I consider a success? I posted my first fic back in ages, but it got about 40 hits and 6 kudos, I don't knkw how to feel about that ratio. Is it worth continuing if I want it to be seen?
if you wrote it, it’s already considered a success. please don’t let strangers’ approvals be the thing that determines your works’ worth and values, and whether or not they are “successful enough”.
sure, kudos and comments are great and deeply appreciated, but they aren’t the reason why I write. like, the thing about fanfics is that it’s a hobby and something you do for fun. and the thing about hobbies and something you do for fun is that you do it for yourself and your own enjoyment. you don’t do it for strangers or their approval. since you asked me, I can only speak for myself — I write for me. not for anybody else. not for strangers on the internet. me. because this is my hobby and also my passion, my source of comfort and a form of self-care. so if I wrote it, it’s a success and I am proud of myself for it. you should be proud of yourself too.
Been obsessed with the idea of a lost episode (post-Shiro’s-death) of team Voltron landing down on a planet that has these reverse siren-esque creatures where, instead of luring people to their death using people’s desires, they instead threaten the loss of those they hold most dear.
So, we have a situation where team Voltron is surround by these creatures, and one-by-one everyone is getting lost in their own heads. It hits Pidge first when she calls out for Matt and her dad, and she starts running after them. Lance doesn’t catch a glimpse of them, but he sees this creepy looking thing in the direction she is running that is most definitely *not* Pidge’s family. He catches her and hauls her back. He’s trying to explain that they’ll go after her family together, trying to talk sense into her about the beast that’s in the way as she gets more hysterical (flash to her POV where she is seeing her family being knelt down in front of a Galra firing squad), when Lance hears “Lancito!” called out. He freezes, “Mami,” escaping him on a breath, before whipping around to find his own mother bound and being dragged away by Galra.
Meanwhile, Hunk and Allura are caught up in their own living nightmares (Allura losing Coran, Hunk losing his folks).
Now, these sirens aren’t working on Keith because all the people he cares about most are already right there with him. So, Keith is left sweating in the middle, piecing together what is happening, and trying desperately to figure out what to do to save his friends. Their families can’t all possibly be here on a random planet in the middle of a galaxy halfway across the universe, right? He hasn’t heard or seen any of the people they’re all crying out for.
Enter a scene where Keith is desperately fighting to keep the ones he holds most dear from running to their real, actual deaths and uhgggg I’m just gutted by the idea of Keith being confronted in the worst way possible that: “You all are my everything. You guys are all I have left to lose. Fuck this, I’m tired of losing everyone. Y’all are not dying.”
Keith kicks ass, breaking the illusion for Allura first by killing her monster. So, now you’ve got the orphan black paladin and the princess of a dead civilization with tears streaming down her face teaming up to save the only people they have left.
“Let’s go save our family.”
Each of the paladins join the fight one at a time, Keith calling out what’s going on over the chaos, tears fresh and emotions raw on everyone, as each new creature is bought down.
They end the encounter with chests heaving. They hail the castle to update Coran on the false distress signal trap, and Coran fills them in on what creatures they must have encountered based on their description. The team is curious as to who broke out of the siren’s call first, and Allura says it was Keith.
They all want to know how he broke free. His answer is simple: “I was never under it. I guess it’s because you guys are who I’m most scared of los-“
He doesn’t even get to finish before Hunk is yanking him into a hug and everyone else is joining in.
Hhhhhhhh I want this so bad. I need it, actually
I concur 👍
nuh uh. Allura's annoying af.
Imagining Hua Cheng getting hit with a truth serum mid-canon (between the Black Water and Mount Tonglu arcs, let's say). He is panicking, because we all know this man's mind is a non-stop loop of "gege's so beautiful, gege's so kind, gege's so clever" and so on and so forth. And it is being forced out of his mouth in an endless stream, much to his horror.
Xie Lian's getting more and more flustered, because he's fairly certain one doesn't normally compliment their bros like that? But then, he has been alone for like 800 years, so maybe he's just not as in-tune with how guy friends interact nowadays? Strange that he's not mentioned his beloved at all though. What's up with that?
And then it takes a turn for the freaky when Xie Lian smacks Qi Rong around a bit (for being an annoying little shit as per usual), and Hua Cheng blurts out: "Sometimes I wish you'd hit me like that. Choke me out like you did at Lang-er Bay. Just fuck me up, Your Highness."
Fucking. Chaos.
Qi Rong is screaming in disgust. Hua Cheng's just muttering to himself like, "Shit, I fucked up, shit, I fucked up," and wondering if there's a way to disperse himself without his ashes. Xie Lian's making noises like a dial-up modem as his brain tries to process all of that, before catching on the detail of, "Wait... what was that about Lang-er Bay‽"

Part 2 of Prince XL x Noble HC >:] more to come soon cos I'm not over this idea bye.
A trope that gets to me: 'guard dog' character and their partner who are both fully aware of it and honestly don't care/kind of like it. Someone says "call your guard dog off" and their partner does call them off. That person, their 'guard dog', is someone who is unreservedly, irrefutably loyal to them. Someone undoubtedly dangerous who is willing to kill, to maim, to obey, simply because of their love for one another. There's no manipulation involved— it is loyalty, brutal, dogged loyalty. And it goes both ways.
