@aterriblememory
hey so it’s march now aka the beginning of endometriosis awareness month and i feel obligated to remind you that debilitatingly painful periods are not normal. if you or someone you know is ending up sick or bedridden every month, you are not crazy and deserve medical attention from someone who will take you seriously
hey it’s march again let’s get this post circulating again
I feel nothing but compassion for the person I was before. By Katherine Blower
did your parents use "growing pains" as a catchall to dismiss any and all pain you felt your entire childhood or are you normal
is that not the norm??
They do this with mental problems too. They pass it off as 'you're just dramatic' or 'thats normal'
“Looking for attention” and “that’s normal” are how my parents passed off my physical health issues and chronic pain, you know, from the degenerative genetic condition I’ve had since birth. We never got to “growing pains” because they refused to believe I was in pain at all so that was fun. 🙃
"You're being dramatic just sleep it off ok"
-my mom sending younger me to bed with a broken arm.
“It better be broken” - my mom after finally showing up to my grade school to take me to the hospital several hours after I broke my arm.
She only showed up after multiple increasingly insistent calls from the principal and she was really pissed off about it.
“It’s not 300”- my mother after I was asked how bad my migraine pain was while I was being admitted to the ER. it was so bad, a blood vessel in my eye burst.
"I still don't see it" after my doctor showed my mother in an x-ray where I broke my wrist.
This was after she made me wait 24 hours and didn't take me to the doctor until I was sobbing and wouldn't leave her alone

With a 5 day short Notice, the District Of Columbia Goverment notified us that fun… Ruby Corado needs your support for We Are Closing The Do
Casa Ruby, the oldest LGBTQ+ center in Washington, DC had its annual $839,000 funding slashed by the DHS (Department of Human Services). Given 5 days notice that their grant would not be renewed, they provided shelter and essential services to LGBTQ+ people round the clock. 30 people lost their jobs and 50 people lost their shelter. Please donate to their GoFundMe to help them keep their remaining beds across 7 DC locations. THIS IS DIRECT VIOLENCE THAT WILL LEAD TO THE LOSS OF LGBTQ+ LIVES AND CAUSES DIRECT HARM. Homelessness in DC is an ongoing issue only being made worse by gentrification and our people are amongst the most vulnerable. Please donate.
I work with people all the time who are coming to get services from my organization because they are staying at Casa Ruby. Getting a job, food, an apartment, an ID, healthcare, all those things require so much time and energy and usually official documents. Casa Ruby provides the safe space and resources needed for people to work on these things, provides documentation that's otherwise nearly impossible to get when you're homeless, and is a huge community hub.
This was announced in the last week of September and the funding ended as of October 1st, 2021. The most recent article I've seen is from October 6th and said that Casa Ruby has closed its 24-hour services and emergency shelter, and laid off 28 people. They still have some services open, but the services they closed are incredibly important. Please consider donating if you can and please spread the word.
The conversation surrounding cultural appropriation has been so severely mutilated by white “allies” that the original intention behind that conversation has become almost unrecognizable in most social contexts.
To explain what I mean, the conversation around cultural appropriation was started by black and native people to discuss the frustrations we feel at being punished socially and financially for partaking in our cultural heritage while white people could take, I.e. appropriate, aspects of our culture that we are actively shamed for and be heralded as innovators. It was about the frustrations we feel when the same white people who shamed us would take our culture and wear it as if they were the ones who created it while still actively shaming us for doing the same.
The original push behind naming cultural appropriation and having these conversations were so that we as a society could evaluate why we were punished for our heritage while white People were not. It was supposed to be about seeking solutions. The idea was to create a society where we could celebrate our cultures with impunity. It was never about telling white people that they “weren’t allowed” to do certain things. We did ask that white People stop doing certain things because they weren’t doing them respectfully and were not invited to do them, but the primary reason we asked them to desist was to reclaim the things they had stolen and to reassign them culturally back where they belonged.
White “allies” saw these conversations happening and instead of trying to aplify our own voices or even try to learn about the complexities behind why we were saying what we were saying, they instead began screaming over us and creating a narrative that was hardly even the bones of what we originally set out to say. It was like they took the conversation we were trying to have, completely decontextualized it, and stripped it of all it’s nuance in order to gain social currency by seeming progressive.
So the conversation around cultural appropriation went from “This aspect of our heritage belongs to us and we find it egregious that we are shamed for it. What steps can we take to address the racism that’s creating this situation as well as rehome the things that have been stolen” to “you’re not allowed to do that because if you do that you’re racist, we don’t really understand why that’s racist but you’re not allowed to do that and if you do that you’re a klansman no exceptions. So you’re not allowed because because”
At the end of the day, did I like the fact that sally was wearing dreads? No. But my primary concern was not that sally was wearing dreads but rather that sally could wear dreads and I couldn’t. THAT was the intended focus of those conversations. It was about addressing the inequality. It was about us. Now the conversation is just about sally and were completely forgotten.
White People are always asking me what they can do to help. You want to know? Stop talking. Aplify our voices and shut the fuck up because you all have pretty much derailed this conversation and many more like it to the point that we no longer are trying to make steps to understand and dismantle the racism around cultural appropriation and instead are just using it as social shaming tactics.
TL;DR: read my post. Most things worth learning about can’t be summarized in the bullet points of a buzfeed article. Don’t come into academic circles and complain because everything hasn’t been conviently summarized for you. Stop pretending that things aren’t accessible to you because you refuse to do the intellectual labor that is learning.
The only thing I would like to add is appreciation for this perfect description of White liberalism “It was like they took the conversation we were trying to have, completely decontextualized it, and stripped it of all it’s nuance in order to gain social currency by seeming progressive.” Note OP is specifically talking about cultural appropriation, I’m the one who thinks it applies more broadly, do not bother OP about my take on her take
I may need this later, for cosplay reasons…

Her name is Katalin Karikó. Hungarian. Daughter of a butcher. Her thesis work became the basis of the mRNA vaccine technology. Read the article here.
My favorite bits from the article include how Dr. Kariko celebrated the fact that the vaccines that used her mRNA research worked
“On Nov. 8, the first results of the Pfizer-BioNTech study came in, showing that the mRNA vaccine offered powerful immunity to the new virus. Dr. Kariko turned to her husband. “Oh, it works,” she said. “I thought so.”
To celebrate, she ate an entire box of Goobers chocolate-covered peanuts. By herself.”
I sincerely hope she is recognized more than she currently is.
fucking goldfish tiktok made me cry bro
humans be like “is anyone going to nurse this animal back to health?” and not wait for an answer
A summary of everything repeated in the notes:
The black color is natural for a black moor goldfish, but they do often change color as they age, sometimes in response to tank conditions. In this case, the vibrancy of the color is more important to note than the color itself. The scales begin very dull and then as Monstro recovers they become vivid.
Monstro is probably suffering from either chemical burns, dropsy, or both. Fish can probably become depressed in a fish way, but it is not the reason he stopped swimming.
Dropsy is an infection of the swim bladder which helps fish float. The water changes help reduce the inflammation and aquarium salt makes it harder for bacteria to grow in the wounds while he fights off the infection.
The chemical burns are probably from living in a too-small or badly filtered tank. Goldfish produce a lot of waste including ammonia, which in large amounts can cause the burns. The water changes are again helping reduce the ammonia level and keeps the water clean while he's recovering, like how for humans with chemical burns we flood with saline.
Because of the amount of waste they produce, goldfish need 10-20 gal each absolute minimum, but still think of that as living in a bathroom as a human. Even this setup may need to grow a bit larger as monstro and it's friends age
Goldfish can live 20/30 years, humans just are Extremely Bad at caring for fish the way we do other pets. Most goldfish need a whole pond and friends to be happy. The goldfish bowl was a temporary viewing object in China to show off the fish to guests in their rooms, and was misunderstood by European visitors to be how the fish were kept all the time.
Fish (and most cold blooded animals and birds) are exempt from most animal abuse protections and retail pet stores are almost fully unregulated in their treatment of animals. Woo!
Idk support well cared for animals including fish and while the bigger the tank the better, don't like.... Try to release your fish or any other animal into the wild. In this case, surrendering Monstro to the pet store was probably the best thing the former owner could've done upon realizing they didn't know how to care for them .
Dandelions symbolize everything I want to be in life
Fluffy and dead with a gust of wind?
Unapologetic. Hard to kill. Feral, filled with sunlight, bright, beautiful in a way that the conventional and controlling hate but cannot ever fully destroy. Stubborn. Happy. Bastardous. Friends with bees. Highly disapproving of lawns. Full of wishes that will be carried far after I die.
