Pentagon will no longer ban trans people from serving in the military

One study estimated that 15,500 transgender people currently serve in the military.

The Pentagon has announced that it will no longer ban transgender people from serving in the military. 

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said that a Pentagon “working group” will take the next six months to look at “the policy and readiness implications of welcoming transgender persons to serve openly.” In the meantime, trans people are allowed to serve openly – which is a welcome change, considering there are about 15,500 trans people in the military now. 

In a statement, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said that the existing regulations against transgender service members were “outdated” and “causing uncertainty” that distracts troop commanders.

“We have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines — real, patriotic Americans — who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that’s contrary to our value of service and individual merit,” he said.
