Actions in Witchcraft
Just like each herb and crystal has certain properties and strength, so do actions taken during rituals and spells. When writing spells it is important to include the proper actions to make sure your spell is as effective as possible.
Burning - Burning an object is a common practice in spells and rituals. Fire is considered a cleansing and activating force.
If you want to destroy something’s influence, burn it and dispose of the ashes away from your home.
If you want to set something into motion, burn objects related to the situation to ash.
If you want to activate certain energies, burn objects related to those involved.
If you are performing a curse or hex, burn the object in the flame of a candle.
Burying/Abandoning - A Witch might bury and object for many reasons. They might want to put something to rest, perform a slow spell, or banish something. There are different ways in which one can bury an object to accomplish a desired outcome:
If you want to keep something close, bury the object in your back yard.
If you want to attract something, bury the object under the front door step
If you want to disperse something to a distance, throw the object into a crossroads
If you want to fix an influence, inter the object in a five-spot pattern
If you want something to work by means of spirits, bury the object in a graveyard (but don’t disrupt those buried there!)
If you want to hide something’s point of origin, conceal the object in a tree
If you want something/someone to work by stealth, hide the object in clothing or on objects
If you want an influence to begin or strengthen, throw the object East
If you want an influence to end or weaken, throw the object West
Rubbing - Rubbing an object can be the easiest and most immediate way to experience witchcraft. Transferring and garnering energy from objects can be done through physical contact with an object.
If you want to put energy into an object, rub it with your left hand
If you want to gather energy from an object, rub it with your right hand
If you want to bring positivity, rub clockwise
If you want to bring negativity, rub counter clockwise
If you want to use crystals to heal, rub the appropriate stone on the effected part of the body.
Soaking - Water is one of the main elements used in witchcraft. It comes in many forms with many different properties and uses.
If you want something to move away and sink, throw it in running water
If you want something’s influence to rise and fall cyclically, float it in a tidal estuary
If you want to protect or cleanse something, soak an object in rain water
If you are focused on your personal goals, soak your object in sea water
If you want to bring about transformation, soak your object in snow/melted snow
If you’re trying to make a wish come true, soak your object in well water
If you want to banish, soak your object in harbor water
Spirit Houses
I haven’t seen any posts about it, so here goes.
We as people tend to dramatise spirits. (Especially Americans let’s not even lie, there’s a huge culture around occultism and ouija and all that shit that’s been blown out of proportions.)
“They’re all evil! They must be gone, exorcised, banished!”
“DON’T PLAY OUIJA YOU’LL GET POSSESSED BY AN EVIL DEMON CREATURE.”
The truth is, a lot spirits don’t even know or care that you’re there, they have a right to be there and were probably there before you. Possessions are really, really rare. Legit ones that is.
However, minor hauntings, such as things being knocked over, spirits nicking things and putting them elsewhere, banging on walls and such aren’t really a threat, and more of an annoyance. So there’s no need to call the exorcist and put fear and negative energy into it (because the spirit feeds off your fear and only grows stronger.)
Trust me, if the haunting was really serious, it would be much more than banging or losing things.
So! How to deal with a minor haunting without getting your exorcist mallet out? The answer is simple: Build a spirit house.
Offer the noisy or cheeky spirit a home. A space of their own that they keeps them occupied and content.
There are tons of methods to build spirit houses, may it be in skulls/bones from other animals, large jars, little doll houses, an intricate structure of thread stretched over a frame, a woven cage of wicker, anything! It depends on what you can provide and also what the spirit may want/need.
The interior decor varies just as much. From a little zen garden to a shiny little room fill with mirrors, and pretty things, it depends again on what you feel is necessary. The idea is to provide the spirit with something that’ll keep it occupied through it’s beauty, intricacy or shiny qualities. Keep them amused. So make an intricate little doll house, or a miniature garden, or a mirror room, it’s up to you!
Once that’s said and done, invite the spirit into it’s home and welcome them there. From there, the annoyance should stop and the spirit may even become willing to aid you in your magical workings!
Next time, consider that before being scared out of your wit and feeding bad energy into it. Sometimes, call it takes is a little compromise!
Oh, and PRETTY PLEASE send me pictures of your spirit homes! I’d love to see them.
I take this to a further level and feel my house is not occupied by enough spirits so I buy haunted objects from thrift stores and set aside spaces for spirit occupation. One of those “garden pagoda” statues is in my garden for land-based spirits to take refuge in/have as territory and it’s made the corner garden much more pleasant and secured against people on the sidewalk who walk by. (In fact it’s an imitation of the japanese version of a spirit house, but the garden decor section at Fred Meyer doesn’t advertise that.)
A haunted home is a secure home! Spirits help keep watch for you and make the place less lonely. Give them a board game and they’ll stop knocking on the ceiling for fun.
So, I made a spread to go with my Deity Communication Spread! You can use them together or separately or not at all!
Card One is the deity – this is the equivalent to the first card in the Deity Communication Spread.
Card Two is one of the qualities/traits associated with them. I tend to read this as a more “negative” trait. Something that might seem scary or intimidating.
Card Three is another personality trait, but this one is usually read as being seen as more positive.
Card Four is what this deity rules over, or has power over.
Card Five will be for something that the deity is associated with, like a symbol or animal or something. (In my first test I got a Queen court card and the Queen itself was the answer there)
These things can be pieced together to try to get a fuller picture of who it is you might be dealing with. If you’ve already used the Deity Communication Spread, you can take Card One from that reading and place it here – and if you haven’t, you can put Card One from this reading into the communication spread, once you’ve identified them and want to know what they want.
This one has been working out pretty well for me, so hopefully y'all will like it!
“[Trickster gods] are the lords of in-between. A trickster does not live near the hearth; he does not live in the halls of justice, the soldier’s tent, the shaman’s hut, the monastery. He passes through each of these when there is a moment of silence, and he enlivens each with mischief, but he is not their guiding spirit. He is the spirit of the doorway leading out, and of the crossroad at the edge of town. […] In short, trickster is a boundary-crosser. Every group has its edge, its sense of in and out, and trickster is always there, at the gates of the city and the gates of life, making sure there is commerce. He also attends the internal boundaries by which groups articulate their social life. We constantly distinguish—right and wrong, sacred and profane, clean and dirty, male and female, young and old, living and dead—and in every case trickster will cross the line and confuse the distinction. Trickster is the creative idiot, therefore, the wise fool, the gray-haired baby, the cross-dresser, the speaker of sacred profanities. Where someone’s sense of honorable behavior has left him unable to act, trickster will appear to suggest an amoral action, something right/wrong that will get life going again. Trickster is the mythic embodiment of ambiguity and ambivalence, doubleness and duplicity, contradiction and paradox. That Trickster is a boundary-crosser is the standard line, but […] there are also cases in which trickster creates a boundary, or brings to the surface a distinction previously hidden from sight. In several mythologies, for example, the gods lived on earth until something trickster did caused them to rise into heaven. Trickster is thus the author of the great distance between heaven and earth. […] Boundary creation and boundary crossing are related to one another, and the best way to describe trickster is to say simply that the boundary is where he will be found—sometimes drawing the line, sometimes crossing it, sometimes erasing or moving it, but always there, the god of the threshold in all its forms.”

Advice for the baby Hellenic Polytheists
I’ve got just about a year under my belt now, so I’m very much still a baby myself. But here’s a few things I wish I’d known, or think might be helpful.
Just make khernips with a match. No really. It’s the extinguishing of a flame in the water that makes it lustral. Don’t worry about the rest unless you really want to and have the time.
You don’t have to introduce yourself to any gods. They all want to be worshiped; just get to it.
We’re not as intimidating as you think we are. We just…read a lot. You can read a lot too. You’re welcome here. We’ll even help.
Books are expensive. Theoi.com’s library is free.
Statuary is nice. It is also wicked pricey. Here’s what you need on an altar: A bowl for offerings, a vessel for khernips (can be near the altar rather than on it)
Wine, olive oil, honey, water are pretty universal libations. You’re welcome.
Dispose of offerings however works for you. Just do it with respect, and you’re fine. Oh but don’t consume offerings to cthonic (underground) deities, alright? That’s bad times.
The gods demand Arete. That is your personal best, not the best of the person next to you, or your mother, or somebody you idolize on tumblr. Do your best.
This is a religion of Kharis. When you ask the gods for something, give them something. Then, do not forget the thank you. Offer again if you are granted what you asked for.
Our tumblr community is pretty great, but we also are sometimes wrong. Find sources, and for gods’ sake do not try to replace your studies with Tumblr. Read for yourself, learn for yourself, build your religion such that it best honors the gods and works for you.
If you’re like me, you’re constantly moaning “How do you pronounce THAT?”. I know, friend, I know. Try a couple of these lessons on the ancient Greek alphabet. It is NOT fool proof. It is an incredibly complex language, and pronouncing it ain’t easy. But boy it will help with those particularly tricky epithets.
Oaths are serious business. Gods are easy to fall in love with. Be careful. Be patient.
Real life pagans are way, way nicer than the ones on the internet. Go find them.
There are exceptions to most rules. Most of those exceptions are Dionysos.
“I don’t know what to say” “I don’t know how to write a hymn” We basically have a hymnal.
No, ___ will not get jealous if you also worship ____. It’s a fear of us recovering monotheists, but I promise it does not apply to this religion. It’s kind of what POLYtheist means, and plus, most of our gods are related. Show the whole family some love.
“What is [god name] like?” They’re pretty fucking cool. Go find out for yourself, and bring gifts.
The gods know we are mortals, and that mortals make mistakes. Apologize. Bring gifts.

I might be drooling.
listen i might be drunk but im right. art & literature & nature & music make life worth living. people who look like they were ripped out of a caravaggio painting make life worth living. go organize a bacchanal in the woods. take pics of your lover in your hotel room in venice. who cares if there’s a void in your soul. who cares if you can’t get attached to anyone. neither can michelangelo’s david.
“Saying yes to life, even in its strangest and harshest problems, is what I call Dionysian. That is the bridge I found to the psychology of the tragic poet. Not to escape horror and pity or cleanse yourself of a dangerous affect by violent discharge, as Aristotle thought, but rather so that you yourself may be the eternal joy in becoming.”
—F. Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols, “What I Owe The Ancients,” §5 (edited excerpt).

Wardruna - traditional Norse music, they try to sound as close to the Viking Age as they can. They’re… tricky, though, as Gaahl, one of their members, seems to be quite a racist dick, and yet another one of their members, Einar Selvik, seems to be quite an anti-racist who thinks it a shame that “right-wing racist idiots” use Norse symbology. I absolutely hate Gaahl, myself, yet I still love the music. It’s… complicated. Feel free to disregard Wardruna if you’d prefer not to deal with that cognitive dissonance.
This is gonna lean heavily towards metal bands, but…

Spellbound am I, am I The wizard has enchanted me, enchanted me Spellbound deep in my soul, in my soul In my heart burns a smouldering fire, smouldering fire
Spellbound am I, am I The wizard has enchanted me, enchanted me Spellbound in my heart’s root, my heart’s root
Did anyone else just get the shivers? Cuz I’m definitely getting the shivers.

@justalittlewiccan I may be utterly mistaken, but is this the master post you were referencing??
As always, please, please be incredibly thorough in your research about what amounts of various herbs are safe for you and your specific situation (medication interactions, diagnoses, etc) to ingest.
Herbal Medicine: What is an Electuary?
An Electuary is a medicinal paste created with something sweet, such as honey or jam. Thick electuaries can be rolled into little balls for children to take with some juice, and thinner electuaries can be mixed with beverages such as hot tea. At its essence, an electuary is an herb infused honey.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the first known use of an Electuary dates back to the 14th century. ‘Electuarie’ is a Middle English word derived most likely from the Greek ‘Ekleikton’ or ‘Ekleichein’ meaning to lick up. After all, a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down, am I right? ;-)
The common kitchen witch (and herbalist) will already be familiar with the process of herbal infusions, such as making tea blends, but making and storing electuaries can really kick your magic crafting up a notch. The primary use is medicinal but you can expand this into everyday spellcraft as well. Below are just a few examples of both medicinal and magical electuaries and how to create them.
Medicinal
Chamomile – Mildly sedative and soothing for stress relief.
Mint – Soothes digestive track to help with heartburn, nausea, and indigestion.
Raspberry Leaf – Especially beneficial for women by balancing hormones and helping with painful menses.
Elderberry, Echinacea, Licorice Root – This blend is a good immune supporter and very helpful for viral respiratory infections and treating the symptoms accompanied by the flu.
Magical (individual ingredients or blend to your tastes)
Love – Rose Petals, Lavender Flowers, Lemon Verbena, Apple, Cardamom
Money – Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Almond, Orange
Protection – Anise, Elder Flower, Fennel, Basil, Blackberry
Purification – Rosemary, Bay, Lemon, Chamomile, Nettle, Turmeric
How to make an Electuary
The best results come from using dried herbs or flowers and local raw honey. The dried plant material allows you to store your electuary longer because it has little to no water in it, where fresh plant material will thin the honey and require refrigeration to prevent mold. Raw honey from your local area is also best because it will contain traces of pollen from the trees and flowers in your area which assist with preventing seasonal allergies.
The process is to create a double-boiler system by putting a pot with some water on to boil, then placing a slightly larger metal bowl in it so that it sits snuggly (but not too tight) without touching the water. The gentle steam will warm the metal bowl enough to melt your honey without boiling it directly. Once your double-boiler is assembled put in your desired amount of honey and dried plant material. You can use herbs from your kitchen, ground spices, dried flowers, etc. I would recommend finding food grade if you’re buying online or at a local shop. Organic would be the best of course (pesticides don’t make good electuaries!). The amount of honey to plant material is up to you depending on how strong you want the infusion to be. Let your plant material simmer for an hour in the honey over your double-boiler.
*Alternative* You could infuse your honey and herbs using a small crock pot if you wanted to so you could simmer for 2-3 hours.
If you want your electuary to be a thick paste, finely grind your herbs prior to infusing using a spice grinder (or mortar and pestle if you have that kind of patience). Alternatively you could just use store bought ground herbs/spices. You will want to use more of an equal ratio of plant material to honey to make sure it stays thick. Please note that this will make the honey taste strongly of the herbs you use so be mindful of taste when you’re choosing herbs to blend, or just plan to roll into more of a “plant pill” to be swallowed. After infusing, store in a clean dry jar with a lid.
If you prefer a thinner electuary that can be mixed by the spoonful with a cup of hot water or tea, then you can use any kind of plant material in any amount you’d like with your honey to control strength and flavor. After infusing, strain it into a clean dry jar with lid for storage. Straining a combination of leaves, roots, bark, and ground spices will allow the smaller particles to stay within the electuary while removing the larger more undesirable pieces. This seems to be the most popular method.
You can now use your electuary however you’d like! Medicinal, Magical, with tea, in your cooking, the possibilities are endless so experiment!
Brightest Blessings,
Thalya /|\
