Okay, let's talk about kids and needles.

Because under the post about giving minors the right to medically consent, people are spreading a ton of misinformation on this - largely because they just do not question the stuff they just assume are "normal". Which here is: "kids are all afraid of needles and therefore if we let them consent or not to medical proceedures, they would just not consent and not get vaccinations, because needles hurt".

And, look. Here is the thing: no, needles do not actually hurt a whole lot. And while, yes, certain procedures that involve being stabbed by a needle hurt more if you are younger for a bunch of reasons... that is actually not the main reason children fear needles. Because, again: the pain is not that bad. And most kids, especially young kids, whose motor skills are still developing, usually will have a bunch more hurting scratches, bruises and the like at any given moment than there will be pain from the needle.

No, from what research can tell, the main reason kids are afraid of needles, is more that for many of them needle procedures are very traumatizing. And that is largely because of the consent issue.

Imagine you are a person who is still pretty darn new to that whole human thing. So for one, yes, your brain is actually not that great in understanding what pain is dangerous and what pain is a safe limit of pain. So yes, someone intentionally hurting you (like with a needle) is really kinda scary. But then there is also the thing where this person hurting you is not telling you why they are doing. The people who you normally trust with keeping you safe (your family) is betraying you, by just holding you down and scolding you for crying over it. Or maybe it is not your family, but some strange nurse who is holding you. And while you are scared, because someone is intentionally hurting you, while someone else is restricting you, the adults around you are telling you, that your emotional reaction to this is actually bad and you are wrong for reacting that way. They might in fact lie to you and tell you that something that is insanely scary to you is "not that bad", instead of just understanding that it is super scary to you. And that is then what you start to expect whenever you see a doctor prepare a needle: people holding you down, hurting you without reason, and telling you that you are wrong for being upset, actively gaslighting you.

We have research on this. And this research is pretty clear: most kids are actually somewhat okay with needles, if you inform them why you are doing it, allow for them to have their emotions, talk to them about their emotions, and allow for them to set at least some conditions.

And frankly, I hate how many people just accept the framing of "kids are naturally afraid of this because it hurts". Like, folks, I know y'all are fucking Americans and that in your culture it is kinda normalized to like put kids into like some sort of fortified hamsterball to stop them from like doing typical kids stuff. But... let me tell you: if you do not do that, kids will actually very regularly engage in dangerous play that they know will often end up in injuries that are going to hurt. And, no, they are not to dumb to understand that. The kids know that this is what might happen because of their play. They actually just take the risk. Yes, they will cry if they get hurt, because - again - their nervous system is still calibrating how it relates to pain. But they will likely do that thing again and again. I can tell you: I fell down a tree so often during my childhood, and I still climbed it. Again and again. So did most kids I knew. Like, fuck, we lived next to a forest. We played "Tarzan", and tried to go along paths without touching the ground. And we fell. A lot. And we still did it.

It is not the fear of pain that makes kids afraid of doctors. It is the fear of the associated force, and gaslighting.

The thing is, if you don't explain it, how are kids meant to give informed consent? That's why a woman named Mary Jenner created The Butterfly Pig, which sells medical play toys to families with medically sensitive kids and children's hospitals, so kids can play about the stuff that's going to happen or watch their caregivers show them. — the profession is fully dedicated to supporting kids and families in the health care setting, and a significant portion of that is educating kids (in a way they can understand, developmentally) and making plans With them to make the experience easier!

And there is SO MUCH research out there! If you explain to kids what’s going on, they need less anesthesia, get better quicker, and have less medical trauma— which leads to a willingness to accept preventative care in the future!

Child Life has been leading the charge in this area for decades, and it’s so awesome to see it becoming more mainstream knowledge!

So, Disney wants a Gaston movie….

Move aside, creep. If anyone deserves to have a spinoff film of their own, it’s Nala. If they can give Timon is own little romp, I’m sure the Lion Queen herself has an interesting enough story to tell to warrant a feature length film. Best part: I think I know just how to do it.

Let me explain.

Now, Mufasa did a lot of things wrong, but one thing I believe it did right was the overall structure, which is what I’d do here. A mix of present day scenes, and flashbacks. Though here, I’d put much more focus on the present day scenes, and have that be the main story, with the flashback sequences being there to explain certain things. The transitions would be through Nala either reflecting, or telling a story to another character.

The past scenes would mainly show Nala growing up lonely under Scar’s reign without Simba, Nala’s decision to leave and her subsequent journey to find help against Scar, where we see whatever obstacles and new characters she meets on her way.

For the present scenes, I’m thinking it’s Nala just getting a hang of being a leader, and preparing to be a mother, as she’ll be pregnant during all these scenes until the end of the movie. I’m not thinking of a whole birth scene, but we will see Kiara (and maybe one or two other cubs) in her or perhaps Sarafina’s care just before the credits roll.

On the topic of Sarafina, this brings me to characters. It pleases me to say that my vision for a Nala movie would bring in as many old characters as possible with the exception of perhaps Mufasa and Kovu. Each character would have a chance to shine, even if for a moment. Scar and Sarafina will be major characters for the flashbacks, and those scenes can even give us Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Yes, Banzai and Ed. Not those two second rate replacements from the remake.

For the present scenes, Simba, Sarabi, others would be there for Nala to interact with. Sarafina can still be there too, but won’t be as prominent. Sarabi would be more present as Nala’s main guide and role model for her new role in life. Simba of course will be Nala’s rock. We’ll see how his is fairing as a new king, and also as a father-to-be. Personally I’d like to think he’s a nervous wreck that Nala and others in his corner would need to reassure. Not so that that Nala herself would be fully put together herself, as she much juggle impending motherhood, with what would her first big event as queen.

I’ll cut right to the chase about the main, present day plot. Nala would meet a single lone hyena while she’s out alone in the Pridelands. While Nala would of course react the way you’d expect her to react, this hyena turns out to be a bit more reluctant to flee than most hyenas, and more importantly, he doesn’t want to fight either. It leads to them talking, and Nala actually listens to this hyenas, who is her age, and was clearly too young to have been in on what Scar and the other hyenas did to Mufasa. Through this exchange, we’d learn more about the history of the hyenas of the Elephant Graveyard, and why they and the lions don’t seem to get along very well. More importantly, it’ll serve as the first chronological instance of a “good hyena” before Jasiri hypothetically comes into the picture from her own clan. Fisi’s encounter with Nala would lead into one of the aforementioned flashback sequences. Over the course of the runtime, they’ll become friends. By the end, Zoww will be recognized by Simba and Nala as a friend. For Nala, she’d become her companion much like the role that Timon and Pumbaa play for Simba.

Those who know me on other platforms will immediately recognize this plot thread as the sane backstory for my hyena OC Zoww. This is because I’ve thought about this sort of thing for many years, and after talking about it with many fans and even writing my own version of this storyline, I think that it would be a great addition to a Nala-centric story. It would not only further add to the much needed world building of the franchise in a way that feels more organic and necessary (something that Mufasa failed in doing), but it would assist in preparing the franchises’ perceived poor handling of hyenas and the public perception of them in general.

Now what’s missing is a main antagonist, and the answer to that should be fairly obvious. While we’ll see Scar and the original hyena trio in all their former glory, the present time needs a threat to keep Nala on her toes and to eventually force her to come into her own as the lioness who can lead her pride and protect her loved ones and herself when times get tough. This threat would of course, be Zira. Zira is given a ridiculous lack of background in Simba’s Pride, and in this movie, that would be rectified.

In the Nala movie I have in mind, we will know exactly how Zira came to meet Scar, learn more about where she came from, and how Nuka, Vitani, and even perhaps Kovu came to be. Will it shatter many headcanons regardless of how it’s done, maybe. But we’ll be getting information that should’ve really been given in SP.

Zira will hang over this film’s events like a shadow, ever present during the present and flashback scenes. It will all culminate in Nala being lured or herded into a trap where Zira would corner or capture Nala to hold as ransom, to bait Simba with the threat of his mate and unborn cubs being in danger. Through this, we can learn about Zira’s exile and how that happened, and we’d get to meet Nuka as a cub, baby Vitani, and maybe even get a hint or two about baby Kovu, if he’s even present at this point.

Zira would underestimate Nala, and the lionesses ( with the lone hyena and other’s assistance) would be able to fight and escape Zira’s claws. This would be the big climax of the film, with a defeated Zira vowing revenge against Nala’s family.

As stated before, the flashbacks would serve to show various moments from Nala’s life. Chief among them being her growth during Scar’s reign over the Pridelands. The main set piece of this time period would be, at last, adding Shadowland to a piece of Lion King media outside the musical. We’d also get to know Sarafina and her relationship with Nala. I don’t know if I would make her so apparently overprotective like she was shown as in the “Be Prepared” twisted tales novel that came out last year, but it is certainly something to look at for her character, given that she only had one line in the original film.

On that matter, one thing would be made absolutely clear in this movie. That Nala is neither the daughter of Mufasa, or Scar. I’d like that nipped in the bud big time, because having to deal with constant incest allegations by normies as a SimbaXNala shipper, is incredibly obnoxious and I want to end that shit for good.

As for Nala’s journey, I don’t really know if I would add any new characters that are super integral. This is the one part of this whole thing that I’m a bit undecided on. What I do know is that it could be a way to intrusive certain elements into the canon that could be explored at a later date. Perhaps Nala comes across a nomadic pride of lions, or perhaps a clan of hyenas that don’t react to her presence with hostility. It can go various ways, and like with the mystery of Nala’s father, it’s something any writer can and has tackled in their own way.

As stated before, I’m an adamant SimbaXNala shipper. They aren’t quite Wolfington or WildeHopps in terms of how enthused I am about them, but as one therapist YouTuber pointed out in his video examining Disney couples, they’re surprisingly fleshed out and healthy compared to others. This is even shown very well in Simba’s Pride (for the most part. I still think we could’ve used one more scene of them before the climax but that’s just me). This movie would explore their relationship at a very pivotal time.

Nala is pregnant with her first litter at this point, and both of them are having to rise to the occasion to lead their pride and rule the kingdom together. To bring back what was lost under the incompetence of Scar. The main thing I would want to convey is just how much both mean to one another.

A point would be made of how much the two missed one another during their time apart after Mufasa’s death, with Nals thinking that Simba was dead, and we see the impact that finding him alive again had on her.

Though what I’d really want to see and one scene I’d have of them having a real discussion about the kingdom is when Nala comes to Simba about her encounter with the lone hyena, and what should be done with him. While I do think characters like Timon, Zazu, and Sarabi could chime into this discussion, it would mainly be the two of them building up to the decision to give Fisi a chance. Simba would be given his first little hint that, he doesn’t have to be just like his father before him in every regard. That Simba can come out of that shadow and be his own king. Something that would end up coming full circle in Simba’s Pride.

Now, production!

Of course, the ideal way and the ideal time to have made a project like this piece been back in the early 2000s. Lion King-mania was still going strong because of 1 1/2, and the actors were still at their A game, being only a decade at most since the original film. Lion King will always be at its best when it’s in 2D. That’s just my opinion. Though, if this movie were to be made today in place of the Gaston movie, the more realistic approach would be photorealistic CGI. The only way I’d see Disney allowing this to be made in 2D is if it were to be made for streaming. Honestly, I could live with this. It would give fans a reason to use Disney plus, and it would keep a slot empty in theaters for a more original project that deserves that treatment more than a movie that would widely be viewed as nostalgia-bait.

I have nothing against Beyonce personally, but I’m sorry, I don’t think her level of voice acting talent can do it for a feature length movie. This is where I’d say either cast a new actress to the role (Zazzie Beatz would be my choice and the choice most fans I’ve spoken to agree on for a replacement for Beyonce), or bring someone back. Moira Kelly voicing Nala in a movie again would be a dream come true, and she recently voiced her again for Disney Dreamlight Valley and sounded great. In the event she declines or is otherwise engaged, I wouldn’t be against Gabriel Union reprising her role from the Lion Guard. She’s great too, and I can’t wait to hear her as Jet in GOAT next month.

As for other voice talents, JEREMY IRONS IS A MUST. They completely passed over him for the remake, and imo, but themselves in the ass. This time, we’re bringing back as many of the voice cast as possible. Of course there are actors who have passed away, and the remake cast who play characters like Sarabi and Rafiki can definitely reprise their roles. I’d much rather have that than to pull a Star War and use ai deepfake crap. No thanks. As for Zira, Nika Futterman is the obvious choice. She was terrific in Lion Guard, and is probably the best replacement for Suzanne Pleshet they could’ve gone with. As for the lone hyena, they could be anyone, though if you ask me, I’d go with someone like Justin Long or John Boyega. That’s just from the people I know though. For Simba, I could honestly go either way with him. Keep having Childish Gambino voicing him, or have Mathew Brodrick come back once more.

For music, a lot of people could do the score, though one person I do not want to leave out of this production would be Lebo M. He’s been jamming with us since the very beginning and I have no intentions on tossing him aside. There would be new music, and old musical motifs. I already mentioned that Shadowland would be pert if this, but honestly, I’d love to add other great pieces of music that never ended up in any of the films. Imagine if we actually got a condensed version of Madness of King Scar for one of the flashback scenes? Also, Noyana is an absolute banger and I personally want it to be the main melody theme of the movie. Like how We are One was the general motif for Lion King 2.

The overall tone for this movie will be pretty light, all things considered. Like one of those Winnie the Pooh movies from the 2000s. Not exactly grand in scale, but personal, moving, and gentle in a way. Of course, it’s Lion King so the darker elements will be present, and there will be stakes, but nothing like the overwhelming trauma of a father’s murder and the kingdom being usurped by a worse ruler, or the PTSD that the murder left behind and a potential war needing to be prevented. This’ll be a story about how one lioness in the right place, with the right heart, can make a big difference.

So, what do you think?

Those are pretty much the bulk of my thoughts and ideas involving this hypothetical Nala-centric movie that should be made and probably better received than any of the current legacy remakes or spinoffs. But I would love to know what all of you think too. Criticism is important and if there’s one thing I love to do, it’s brainstorm.
