you know, Rocky hadn't heard their name spoken by someone else in 46 years. and then they meet an alien who physically cannot say their name, and who gives them a name he can say. and then spends years with said alien as their only companion
I just wonder if they feel a deeper connection to "Rocky" than they do their actual name by the time they get back to Erid

I'm doing further transcription work (I'm in the second half of the movie at last!) But, I noticed some little things about the Eel...
The SM-8 Research Lead and her Assistant were bickering with each other directly in front of Simon, and he didn't fucking notice ⁉️
Then again, I didn't notice until doing the transcription work. I guess choosing two voice actors who sound vaguely similar, and then crunching it up to sound like radio static probably didn't help the case.
Some examples of their bickering:
Seems like the Research Lead is a bit more open about talking, more emotional. She has a British accent. The Assistant has a slightly different accent (sounds a little Russian in some lines?) A bit more of a biting, brassy tone, more secretive about things. They seem torn between showing Simon the Light. The Research Lead wants to help him, and get Ava's attention. The Assistant wants to stay away.
The eel is very distinctly two people. I thought maybe there might have been more who amalgamated, but this concept art seems to give off "conjoined twins" vibes:
These two girls were biting at each other and having a full conversation about him, and Simon was none the wiser. Holy cow.
i don't see anyone talking about how Rocky had to go back to Erid and tell everyone his 22 other shipmates had passed. why not. also why is no one talking about how earth had to find out through Grace's recordings that Yao Li-Jie and Olesya Ilyukhina both passed before being able to complete their missions. do you think their families and friends were upset at the mission commanders for sending them without a higher rate of survival. not survival back to earth, but at least to complete the mission. they all already had to grieve that they'd never get them back, but to learn that they weren't even able to complete the mission they were sent for? how heartbreaking do you think that was. for the eridians and the humans alike. I imagine the eridians being more forgiving, because they had no way of knowing what could've happened, and they also expected Rocky and them to make it back, so it's just, in simple terms, one grievance. the friends and families of the Hail Mary already grieved the crew because they knew they were sacrificing themselves for the betterment and safety of humanity. but then they had to grieve that loss again because they no longer had a 'reason' for their deaths. what if. why doesn't anyone talk about that.

Wholesome Grace and Rocky Headcanons:
Rocky learns the concept of “good morning” isn’t about time—it’s about care, and starts sending it whenever Grace wakes up, no matter the ship’s cycle.
Grace keeps a running list called “Things Rocky Made Better Without Trying,” and it gets updated way too often to stay serious.
Rocky figures out which of Grace’s jokes mean “I’m okay” and starts responding faster to those specifically.
Grace once says “good job, buddy,” and Rocky treats it like a formal achievement worth remembering forever.
During the four year trip to Erid, They both stop thinking of the ship as equipment and start thinking of it as something they’re taking care of together.
Grace starts saying “we did it” even when Rocky did 99% of the work, and Rocky never corrects him.
Grace starts labeling some of Rocky’s messages as “made my day,” even though Rocky doesn’t know what that means in measurable terms.
Rocky learns that repeating reassurance twice makes Grace visibly calmer, so he quietly builds that into his communication style.
While on Erid, Grace realizes Rocky always positions himself slightly between Grace and unfamiliar areas, not out of danger response anymore—but out of habit of care.
Grace starts resting a hand on Rocky’s suit shoulder while talking, like it’s the most natural punctuation in conversation.
Rocky learns that Grace’s silence is more comfortable when they are physically close, so he reduces distance whenever words fall silent.
