HISTORY MEME - six women: maria sibylla merian [1/6]
Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, born in 1647. Her step-father encouraged her to draw and paint, and she painted her first images of insects and plants, based on specimens she had collected, at the age of thirteen. She continued drawing and painting after she had married, and increased her income and social status by giving drawing lessons to the unmarried daughters of wealthy families. In 1699, she and her daughter, sponsored by the city of Amsterdam, traveled to Suriname, where she worked there for two years. While in Suriname she sketched animals and plants, often collecting local names and uses for the plants she drew. She also criticized the treatment of natives and slaves by the Dutch planters in the colony. In 1705 she published the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamesium, her major work describing the insects of Suriname. Her work observing insects disproved the then-popular theory that insects were born by spontaneous generation, and though her work was popular amongst high society, because it was written in the vernacular it received little attention from the scientific community. She died in 1717. (x)
Old West Luke and Leia! I imagine Leia would be a Mexican princess of sorts…
Coworker/buddy Bridget (CHECK HER OUT) drew up Luke and Leia by way of a Western setting, and badass latina Leia is something I would like to savor for a bit. Kiiiiinda kicking myself that I didn’t think of this first.
if Leia was Latin@, Luke would be Latin@, too, since they’re twins. just saying. unless they had different fathers. hm.
I actually had some thoughts on this at the time! If you want to go further into headcanon land with me… Born back east to a mixed-race former slave (Anakin) and a French mother (nicely foreign Padme), Luke and Leia were separated and sent to (respectively) Nowhere, North Dakota and a wealthy hacienda in Mexico. Thanks to their wealth Leia’s adoptive parents are politically influential, as well as sympathetic to a rebellion (led by the tribes cast out west by the Indian Removal Act) fomenting against the U.S. Empire, a power controlled from the shadows by a now nearly-immortal and totally evil Andrew Jackson.
Han, of course, would be a cowboy swindler/smuggler/adventurer in the Southwest, accompanied by a gigantic, fur-laden, semi-mute voyageur (Chewie).
And the Death Star would be a flamethrowing airship that destroys half of Mexico .-.
Erases female fandom nerds out of the equation almost entierly, presenting the idea that women don’t go to comic book stores, arcades, conventions, or other fandom based activities (you know, because being a nerd is totally male exclusive/that space is entirely for men) WOMEN...

Like so many biology geeks, I grew up with David Attenborough documentaries. This comic includes a shout-out to some Attenborough favorites, including the critically endangered Panamanian Golden “Waving” Frog. The original comic is over here!
my thesis document is currently clocking in at 120 pages and I still have more to do
Moses: Why did you choose me? Queen: We didn’t Moses, the Gods did. - The Prince of Egypt
folklore feels (east of the sun, west of the moon)
‘So when she reached home, and had gone to bed, it was the same as before. A man came and lay down beside her; but in the middle of the night, when she heard that he was fast asleep, she got up and lit the candle. She let the light shine on him, and saw that he was the most handsome prince one ever set eyes on. She fell so deeply in love with him, that she thought she couldn’t live if she didn’t give him a kiss at once. And so she did, but as she kissed him she let three drops of hot tallow drip onto his shirt, and he woke up. “What have you done?” he cried.’
