I hate that ‘bad dream’ just means ‘nightmare’ instead of ‘shitty quality dream.’ I had a bad dream last night. It wasn’t scary it just didn’t make a lot of narrative sense
Hiii :)
I don't know if you wrote anything like this before, but is it possible to have a hurt villain x caretaker hero?
Btw i read a lot of your posts and I love everything you write.
"Look what the rats dragged in," the villain said. "Do you have a medical license to go with that cape?"
The hero's brow furrowed, taking in the sight of the villain, imobiilised against the bed. The prison medical bay had been emptied except for them. And the villain...
"Bloody hell."
"You should see the other guys."
"I did," the hero said. "They took me by the morgue first before they'd let me in. Something, something, you're still dangerous even when you're incapacitated. You know. Because I have such a poor understanding of what you're capable of."
The villain smiled, cracking their lip open again, fresh blood welling up. Their teeth were already stained with gore they hadn't had the chance to clean away.
The hero moved over to them to get a closer look, gaze roaming over the splatterings of blood and the visible signs of injury. Bruises. Swelling. A nasty gash along their cheek.
"You want to tell me what happened?" the hero asked.
"There's video footage. They record everything in here."
"I'm not interested in the video footage, I'm interested in talking to you. I'm going to sit you up, is that okay?"
The villain's gaze moved over to them in turn. Beneath the carnage, the fearsome threat of violence, the villain looked tired. Thinner than when the hero had last seen them. Like some vital essence of them was being slowly leeched away.
"If I say no?"
"I'll do my best to treat you laying down. Wait. How are your ribs? Can you even sit?"
"You could just let me die."
The hero's stomach squirmed, revulsion rising in their chest at the thought.
The villain's mouth twitched in another mirthless smile. Their fingers flickered, an indication that the hero could adjust the mechanical bed. The hero pressed the button, taking a moment to steady themselves as the villain's upper body carefully rose. Their eyes squeezed shut in pain.
The hero's eyes narrowed, hand going tentatively to the villain's torso, inching their shirt up. The bruises beneath the material were even more livid than the ones on their face.
"These are broken," the hero said.
"They're just ribs."
"Not if they puncture-" The hero caught themselves. They exhaled a breath through their teeth. When they glanced up, the villain's gaze was on them, with no pretense.
The hero's heartbeat quickened. They had to resist the stupid urge to reach out, less professionally, to cup the villain's face.
"Alright," the hero said, softly, instead. "I'm going to do what I can and clean you off. I'll get you some water for your mouth. Rinse and spit so I can check your teeth. Does that sound good?"
"You're a living saint." The villain's voice was just as soft, and infinitely more bitter.
"...And I'll get some pain meds."
The hero felt the villain watching them as they moved around the room, gathering the necessary supplies. When they looked back, though, the villain's attention was always idly elsewhere. The ceiling. The wall. The restraints keeping them strapped down like an apex predator inclined to rampage.
When the hero returned, the villain sipped the water, rinsed and spat the blood away without sending it at the hero's face. They let the hero dab at their body with a warm damp cloth, apply disinfectant, bandages and the like as needed.
That was something.
"Do you want to die?" the hero asked, quietly.
The villain laughed.
"Is that funny?" the hero asked, next.
"If you were going to kill me, conqueror, I wouldn't be in this hell hole."
"And if you wanted to die, I suppose," the hero said, "you could have let them kill you instead of fighting back."
"I wasn't going to be finished off by rats. That's just embarrassing."
"How's the pain now?"
"Fighting you was worse."
"I'm sorry I haven't visited," the hero said, tone as gentle as their hands.
The villain scowled, laughter dying. They looked like they wanted to say something, then didn't.
"They want to put you in solitary for this. I'll talk to the warden," the hero said. "You didn't start the fight. You shouldn't be punished for it."
"I shouldn't be punished for murder, hero mine? What are you punishing me for then?"
"I'm not - I -" The hero floundered, then closed their mouth.
They focused on the things they could treat. The wounds they could keep from festering.
"It wasn't meant as punishment," the hero said. "I just had to stop you."
"And they just had to keep me alive," the villain said. "Prod me and poke me and take my blood and my hair and whatever else that so fascinates them about their most valuable asset. Two wrongs do, as ever, make a right."
The hero tensed, gaze cutting up to the villain's face.
The villain smiled at them, blissfully, as the pain medication finally seemed to begin to take effect. Their usually sharp eyes turned cloudier, if no less deadly for being a poisonous fog instead of a blade.
"...you wanted them to call me," the hero said. "You knew they'd be too scared to get close enough to give you even basic first aid."
And knew, too, that the warden would never simply let them die in a fight, or by the hand of a guard, no matter how many other inmates they took out.
The villain blew a kiss their way, and closed their eyes.
"You always care so damn much," they said, voice turning a little slurred. "Care enough to keep me yourself, won't you?"
When the villain drifted off in front of them, pain medication aside, the hero knew they hadn't slept properly for months. Likely not since their capture.
The hero swallowed.
They reached out, brushing their fingers carefully along the less bruised half of the villain's face.
Unconscious, they didn't seem so terrifying a thing. They didn't seem unstoppable at all.
"I'll talk to the warden," the hero murmured, though the villain couldn't hear them. "None of them will ever hurt you again."
But, unstoppable, the villain was.
The hero kept their vigil.
“You’re late,” Partner scowled as Hero arrived just in time to see the police make off with several of Villain’s henchmen.
“Sorry,” said Hero, glancing over partner and taking note of any injuries. What was there was superficial: a split lip, bruised knuckles… nothing awful as far as Hero could tell. And the rest of the team didn’t look much worse.
“Sorry doesn’t cut it!” Partner spat. “Not in this line of work. So where the hell were you?!”
“You know where I was…”
“Oh right,” they laughed harshly. “Off with those little friends of yours, was it?”
“It was important-“
“More important than people’s lives?!”
“I said I’m sorry, okay?!” Hero yelled, which only seemed to annoy Partner more. Though at least this time they stopped yelling back.
“Whatever,” they tutted. “Not like we needed you anyway. We had it covered.”
Hero bit their tongue as a wave of anger washed over them. Never have they wanted to slap Partner more. Didn’t need them? What the fuck gives them the right to be so angry then?!
Hero took a breath, aware that their emotions were still reeling from the meeting they had with their friends-
“You’re never around.”
“You cancel last minute-“
“Or just disappear without saying anything.”
“And where the hell is the last three months’ rent?!”
“I needed you and you weren’t there!”
…former friends.
“Hero,” said Mentor as they made their way over to the two. “Can I have a word?”
Hero sucked in a breath and tried to hold everything together. Never have they been more grateful that their mask covered their bloodshot eyes.
“…sure.”
The two walked a few blocks down, to an alley with no foot traffic. Hero was glad for the peace and quiet, though not so much for what came next.
“I heard what you and Partner were arguing about,” said Mentor.
Hero said nothing but looked down and waited for them to continue.
“And I must say, I’m rather disappointed in you.”
“Look, I know I screwed up,” Hero began. “But it’s just this once so could you please let it go-“
“Just this once?” Mentor raised their brow. “Hero, you’ve been out of it for a while now. Every time I see you, you’ve seemed so distracted by something or other. You know you can talk to us about it, right?”
“I’m just- I’m just struggling with stuff at home and-“
“We’re all struggling with home stuff, Hero,” Mentor sighed, looking more disappointed than when the conversation started. “Is that really what all this is about?”
“I-“
“And seriously, you knew what you signed up for when you joined. At the end of the day, the mission comes first. I’m sorry the world doesn’t stay out of danger just so you can go out drinking with your mates.”
“That sounds important,” Friend scowled as Hero’s phone buzzed for the third time.
“It’s fine,” Hero assured. “Look, I’m sorry about-“
The phone buzzed again.
“What I mean to say is-“
Another buzz.
“I’m really trying-“
A sixth time, and their friends only grew more and more frustrated as Hero’s eyes kept wandering back to their phone.
“Not like we needed you anyway. We had it covered.”
“What did you call me for?” Hero snapped.
“Excuse me?” Mentor scowled.
“Partner said you guys had it covered, so what the hell were you calling me for?”
“People’s lives were at stake, Hero!”
“And the five of you weren’t enough?” Hero’s knees shook as they kept biting back. Never have they spoken this way to Mentor before. Always so grateful for everything they’ve done. Always felt so privileged to be allowed to fight alongside them. The way they spoke to them now felt wrong, but their mouth moved faster than their brain could keep up. “I told you I was busy. I said, unless it was an emergency-“
“Are you seriously putting your petty little problems above actual lives here?!”
“You should try being selfish,” Villain said. “Every now and again, at least.”
“What’s wrong with putting myself first for once, dickhead!”
The backhand came faster than Hero could feasibly react. A copper taste on their tongue and a throbbing cheek. They hit back- or tried to at least: the shock of the initial hit not strong enough to dampen the anger. Hero missed, and Mentor hit them back right in the stomach. Hero found themselves winded on their knees for only a second before they were beaten down to the floor.
It didn’t last long. And yet it lasted an eternity. But eventually new pains stopped arising. Hero stared blankly at the floor as Mentor pulled back and took a deep breath. The rage drained out of him and his usual cheery self resurfaced.
“God, sorry about that,” he said sheepishly. “Guess I overreacted.”
Hero didn’t move, didn’t look up. Their head throbbed and they felt dizzy enough to think that maybe they were hallucinating. Mentor seemed so surreal with how quickly he switched back.
“Look, maybe we should both take the evening to cool off and we’ll talk again in the morning, okay?”
Hero looked up then, more in disbelief than anything else. Mentor was looking back at them, their body language near perfectly emulating their mediator stance. Everywhere except the eyes. In Mentor’s eyes were a warning.
Hero didn’t nod or say anything. And Mentor didn’t wait for a response before leaving. When the throbbing in their head died down enough to think, Hero went back to their apartment.
Only to find a box of their things waiting by the front door.
Villain was not expecting a phone call this late into the evening. Villain was not expecting a phone call period. They had the evening off. The day off even. Right-Hand was taking care of everything, and Villain was enjoying a lovely end to their monthly self-care day. So sure, they gave a heavy sigh when their phone rang just as their show was about to start, but this was the golden age of streaming, and they can always watch it on catch-up. Besides, could be an emergency.
“Yes?” Villain said, muting the tv and hoping the phone call would be over before the intro finished.
Silence. Though Villain could make out a faint breathing.
They were about to prompt the caller again when a familiar voice finally piped up.
“…ask me again,” Hero said, their voice faint and a little strained.
“Hero?” Villain turned their tv off completely and stood upright. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I-“ Hero cut themselves off. Villain could just about make out the sound of Hero taking a few deep breaths.
“Are you alright?” Villain asked, making their way to their bedroom to grab some clothes in case they needed to leave. “If there’s something I can help you with-?”
“I want-“ Hero took another breath. “I want to hear you say it again. Ask me again.”
They knew what Hero was talking about. Villain had given them the whole shpiel last time they met. Pretty words and even prettier promises. Though at the time, Hero was far too self-righteous to take Villain seriously. Still, Villain could sense a trace of temptation, and made sure Hero didn’t leave without their phone number. That was months ago…
“Please,” Hero pressed with a tightness to their voice, and Villain was straight to their computer, pulling up a program to trace the call.
“I assume you don’t want to hear the whole twenty-minute speech again?” Villain joked, which seemed to get a chuckle out of Hero. If one that was clearly covering up a sob. A location came up, and Villain was grabbing their keys and coat.
“Just the ending will do.”
Villain paused, praying to whatever god that was out there that none of this was some elaborate infiltration attempt.
“Join me,” they said. And they were out the door the second Hero said yes.
Part 2
old man yaoi this, old man yaoi that, these men are in their 30s, they are not old!! this is the real old man yaoi
Villain arches their brow as they hold the paperback novel pinched between their fingers. Hero tries to ignore the heat creeping up their face. Villain doesn't even bother to speak, their face saying saying more than words could.
"I told you already, get the hell out of my house." Hero bites. They can't keep the tremble out of their voice.
Villain doesn't bother to respond to the demand, eyes going back to the book, then back to Hero, then back to the book again.
"I didn't know you were a reader." They begin, mirth beginning to color their tone. The corner of their lips twitch.
"Just shut up and-"
"Loving The Villain, what an interesting title." They're fighting a smirk at this point, as Hero begins to shake visibly. For once, not from fear or irritation in Villain's presence, but unrelenting mortification. They hadn't expected Villain to pull a home invasion today, interrupting their afternoon reading.
Villain returns the book to the coffee table gingerly, before examining the stack of books nearby. Undoubtedly Hero's recent reads.
"Get out." Hero demands again, words wobbling pathetically. Villain pays no mind. They run their fingers down the spines, some books worn from frequent rereads. Favorites, most likely.
"Touched by The Villain, Saved by the Villain," They drawl, "Villain's Mistress." They snicker, picking up another book and noting the risqué cover.
Hero manages to unplant their feet from the ground, stalking over and ripping the novel from Villain's hands. "Leave my stuff alone."
"No way, this is too interesting. I'm learning so much about you today." Their grin stretches from ear to ear, looking more delighted than Hero has ever seen them. "Is it safe to say you have a type?"
Hero moves to stand in front of their book pile, blocking Villain's view. "It -" They lick their lips, hesitating to find the right words, "It doesn't mean anything. It's just books."
Placing a warm hand on their hip, Villain slides Hero out of the way, not commenting on the gasp they let out at the sudden manhandling. They're absolutely not done picking apart their nemesis' literary interests.
"Sure. I'm positive 'My Sweet Villain' has absolutely no connection to anything at all." They tease, picking up another book as they read the synopsis. Villain may be many things, but a fool is not one of them.
"Well, you're an absolute freak," They say, thumping the book into Hero's chest as they instinctively catch it, "Maybe we should start a book club."

Hi hi, can I request possibly submissive batshit crazy Villain x Slightly concerned hero (and maybe a bit of enemies to lovers), I love your work btw, it inspires me a lot ^^
“Oh come on! You’re losing on purpose, now!”
Villain grinned from underneath them, not quite smug but certainly pleased with themself.
As of late, it seemed as though their goal was less about actually causing villainous havoc and more about seeing what crimes got Hero there to apprehend them the fastest. Determination to defeat their nemesis, the crimefighter would have called it, if not for how giddy they seemed whenever they got caught in the act.
“Do you really doubt your own skillset that much? That you think I’d have to throw a fight for you to get your victory?“ Villain responsed, though they didn’t seem to be putting much effort into trying to sway Hero’s opinion.
“I don’t doubt myself. What I do doubt is that you, of all people, would lose a fight to one singular hero alone.”
Villain was terrifying as an opponent. When they first met, Hero’s entire team was not enough to defeat them. Hero had come close to leaving a mark but had failed to land the blow in the heat of the moment and the terror of watching their comrades fall with ease.
Something had shifted, Hero didn’t quite know when. Maybe it was when they’d attempted to fight Villain alone, quivering subtly but still determined to bring them to justice. Maybe it was when they’d been willing to sacrifice their life for the city, including all the villains that lived in it.
Villain had started drawing them away from the rest of the team, wanting to catch them alone. Private and intimate, almost. Hero had initially suspected a trap, though they far from followed through with any devious schemes.
The first time Villain had lost, it was clear something was up. They’d barely given any effort to fight back. The same person who had devastated the team within a few minutes had fallen in battle in the same amount of time.
An off day, Hero assumed. Perhaps they were sick, exhausted, or injured by another rival villain. Despite what their team would have thought, Hero had opted to let Villain go. They weren’t particularly keen on attacking civilians or causing property damage anyways, though they were powerful they weren’t a top priority.
And now it had happened again.
“You want me to win, Villain. Tell me why.” Hero pressed their weapon — currently caressing the criminal’s exposed skin — further against their flesh. It was an empty threat: Villain surely could have dismissed the blade at any time.
“You’ve never been bored before, Hero?” Villain asked, like this wouldn’t have been a life or death situation for any other human on the planet. Like they were just throwing a sports match, not a fight to the death.
Though, it made a sickening semblance of sense.
Nobody on the team had ever seen someone like Villain before. Their powers were immense and almost incomprehensible. If not for the positive connotations of the word, anyone would have called them godly. Untouchable.
Hero was doubtful that anyone had threatened the villain before. Sure, people must have tried, their personality was far from amiable, but it must have been tremendously easy to dispose of them.
Defeat was new to them. It must have felt exhilarating, to be the one beneath the blade for once. To feel human after a lifetime of near immortality. Perhaps that had driven them mad, and led them to a life of villainy.
“Let me rephrase that then, if you aren’t going to give me a precise answer.” Hero leant in closer, hoping to observe any subtle movement in their expression. They tried hard to ignore the way Villain’s cheeks flushed. “Why me?”
Hero wasn’t the strongest superhero, nor were they the most likely to let Villain do as they pleased. It didn’t make sense from a logical standpoint at least, didn’t feel like this was a calculated decision.
Villain paused for a moment, looking as though they were internally computing how the phrase this, like the way their words came across would really matter to the hero. Their eyes were wide and they shimmered unsettlingly.
This was the most fun they’d had in ages, to say the least.
“The other heroes are tremendously soft. They’re people who save the lives of the innocent,” Villain explained as though Hero’s colleagues were any weaker than they were. The crimefighter quirked an eyebrow, confused at the implication that they weren’t one to save lives.
“You, Hero, are the person who brings the guilty to justice. Very different attitudes to the same job title. The rest of them are all ever so determined to stop me, but you’re the only one trying to catch me.”
“I’m not sure I follow your semantics here, Villain.”
“Let me put it this way:” Villain leant closer to the blade pressed against their skin. If it were anyone else, it would have caused injury.
“I know you’ll never be able to defeat me. You’re weaker in a multitude of ways. But that glint of determination in your eyes can convince even me that you’ve got a fighting chance. You want to destroy me more than you want to save anyone from my antics.”
Hero had barely fought at all today, and yet they felt horribly out of breath already. Their chest was tight and each inhale felt laborious.
Everything Villain had said was true, nauseatingly so. Right now, they wanted nothing more than to tear apart the criminal and see if they were inhuman down to their core too. It would be wrong, to act with such impulsiveness on the job. There were protocols to be followed.
It was getting harder and harder to recall what their procedures had stated, not when the villain was practically begging for the hero to let go of their own inhibitions. They both needed this, simultaneously an outlet and a final, desperate attempt to feel grounded.
“My team know I’d never defeat you on my own. If I’m gone for a prolonged period of time, they’ll assume I’m kidnapped, or worse, betraying them.” Technically, most of their team would see indulging the villain as quite traitorous, but Hero willed that train of thought down.
“If I have to kidnap you then so be it.” Villain grasped the hero’s hands. A deliberate showcase that if they pleased, they could remove the blade from their clutches. They made no such attempt.
Something inexplicable about the hero made them feel alive. It ignited a primal fear in them that they’d lost amongst the numbness of invulnerability. Right now, they were a predator trapped beneath the dull claws of a prey animal. Exhilirating.
Despite themself, Hero smiled almost bitterly. A breathless laugh left their lips, in spite of how ludicrous the situation was. This should have been horrifying, yet a sense of wanting washed over them far too quickly.
“Something tells me you’d prefer it if I was the one kidnapping you,” they jested dryly. Villain ran a finger down their opponent’s blade.
The pair were close enough that their noses were practically touching. It would have been easy (and wildly tempting) to lean in and close the gap, but neither caved. Besides, a kiss was something soft and domestic. The tension between them was anything but.
“Your team are currently outside the building, and within five minutes they’ll have reached this very room.” Hero knew better than to ask how they could have possibly known that without looking. I have to leave was the very obvious subtext woven into their words.
“I look forward to our next fight, Hero.”
“You know, if this had all happened a few months ago, I think I would have kept you.”
Hero lay exhausted in the criminal’s lap, having given up their efforts to stop Villain from combing through their hair in such a hypnotising manner.
“Congratulations on reaching the first steps to some semblance of a normal moral compass.” Hero’s words were sarcastic though they lacked any tone to indicate that, or any tone at all as a matter of fact, for they were simply too drained.
This type of vulnerability between the two of them would have been unspoken of only a few weeks ago. If their nemesis had approached them like this, guard completely down, they would have assumed either a devious trap or a byproduct of some mind-controlling crimimal they’d never encountered before.
Villain didn’t know the exact details of the hero’s latest mission, but they did know that it had gone horrifically South. Nobody had officially released the details, but there was a sudden drop in the amount of active supers patrolling, and the ones that stook around carried a haunted glint in their eyes.
Then, this morning, Hero had staggered over to face them in battle, only to collapse entirely the moment Villain had grabbed their arm and asked them what the hell was up with them and why were their punches flailing more than they were hitting? It had felt wrong to defeat them in such a state, so they elected to bring them back to their own base.
If this had been Villain in any other time, they would have been elated at having Hero captured in their base. It was no strange fact to anyone that knew either one of them that they were borderline obsessed with the superhero. Somewhere along the line, their goals in villainy had shifted to purely taking down their nemesis once and for all.
They still yearned for that, of course. To battle against the hero and have them defeated, writhing in their grasp. Desperate for a mercy that Villain was too sadistic to grant. But, the desire to have them chained and locked away seemed to dissolve once they glanced at how lifeless their companion’s eyes seemed to be.
This wasn’t pity, they told themself, although Hero did look particularly pitiful in that moment. It simply wasn’t fun if Hero just gave in before the first hurdle. And, it didn’t look like there was anyone back at the agency willing to, quite literally, nurse them back frok exhaustion, so Villain supposed they’d just have to do for now.
And then, surely, they’d be right back at each other’s throats.
“You’ve got quite a few injuries that don’t look like they’ve been checked out, Hero. Have you been neglecting the poor medics?” Villain asked, fingers softly trailing down from their hair to their arm, which was quite brusied up even for a superhero.
“They’re busy.” The words sounded heavy in their throat. Busy. Villain probably should have made that assumption, in all honestly. It wasn’t like the vast majority of the agency’s lapdogs all collectively agreed to take a vacation on a random week of November. Though, some part of them had honestly begun to assume them all dead.
Villain wasn’t sure if that part of them was an optimist or an overthinker.
“Your medics at the agency are busy.” Villain started, speaking as though the offer they were about to make was the most obvious assumption Hero could make. The latter only stared dumbly at them, far too weary to follow the same line of thought.
“What, you want me to go to a hospital? Villain, you know they can’t treat powered people there,” Hero rebutted, their tone carrying an exhaustion so deep-set that they almost sounded feverish in their words. They were about to sit up in an attempt to engage further in the conversation, but a gentle hand on their shoulder kept them horizontal.
“Well yes, but there are always other medics who can help. If I tell my team my made a deal, and that you’d help me with something or other in exchange for their medical services, they’d listen blindly. You could come here whenever you’d need it, they’d be none the wiser about today.”
Hero huffed slightly in response.
“As if they’d believe that. I’m sure they all know about your stupid little crush on me by now.” Villain blushed in response, clearly fatigue had made the hero impulsive. Sure, yes, it was an easily observable fact, but neither of them had particularly brought it up before. Especially not using that word in particular. It felt softer than whatever it was that they’d grown to feel towards the hero.
“What they think is besides the point, asshole. Don’t withold yourself from actual medical attention because you think it might be a little embarrassing. Don’t they train you to be less self-conscious in hero school or whatever?”
“Hm, I think it’s the opposite actually, part of the whole fearless and selfless martyr shtick. They make you take a module on it and everything,” Hero joked lightly, tone still not quite matching the snark of their words.
“Ha ha very funny, don’t skirt around the topic. Your injuries don’t look like they’ve been treated at all, it should concern you.” Villain reinforced. Because, yes, this should absolutely be concerning the hero, who should have stayed in prime condition so they could continue fighting the villain.
“Villain, it’s nothing fatal, I can handle it. They need to be prioritising the urgent cases at the moment, a few field injuries doesn’t classify as something dire,” Hero tried to explain, however they could see by now that Villain wasn’t fully listening. Or, rather, they were, yet they refused to entertain the possibility that other supers other than their nemesis mattered in the slightest.
“They should be prioritising you. You’re their best player, whatever idiots they’re focusing on now wouldn’t be able to outmatch you with all their powers combined,” Villain scoffed, gripping their nemesis’ hand possessively.
Hero only smiled faintly in modest amusement. At the sight of Hero clearly not taking their rant seriously, Villain continued further.
“My medics would always prioritise you here, no matter what was happening, you know that, right? If we struck a deal, they’d put you at the top of their list. After all, how the hell am I supposed to antagonise you if— you know,” Villain gestured to the hero, still settled in their lap, close to curling up in comfort.
It was true, everything they said. The world could have burnt itself into nothing but ashes, and as the charred remains of what it once was fell lifeless to the ground, Villain would still care more about the debris cutting Hero on the finger as it pelted down.
“God, there’s so much wrong with you,” Hero laughed, finger pressed against their companion’s forehead in a teasing albeit weak manner.
“What, the lengthy list of felonies didn’t tell you that already?” Villain quipped back softly.
“Just taking one long look at you would tell me that enough times over, let alone having to skim through all your paperwork.”
Villain pressed their lips into a tense line. Though their eyes carried a shimmering glow of horrifying fondness, there was also a much more grim touch to them. They carried a weight that could only truly be understood by a fool watching the one thing that had ever resonated within them rot away before their helpless form.
“You should get some rest, at the very least.”
“When the hell did you get so soft?” Hero attempted to jest back, although they were cut off by an almost comically timed yawn, as if the only thing in the world that wanted to defy Hero’s own tiredness was their stupidly stubborn determination to never give in even past the final hurdle.
“I mean it, Hero. I’m not kicking your ass until you’ve had eight hours, minimum.”
“Eight? Ever the sadist, hm Villain?” Hero muttered, though their eyes were already shut and their breathing had began to lull.
Villain paused, their hand hovering just above the tangles of their nemesis’ hair. To subdue and best the hero once and for all, that was still their end goal. The fire inside them that longed to finally conquer them hadn’t dwelled in the slightest.
And yet, Villain sighed almost wistfully, wondering if perhaps there were other, less fury and spite-driven ways to achieve their goal of having this much power over their enemy.
Usually, Hero didn’t mind their second job at all. When they spent most of their time in precarious, adrenaline-enducing scenarios, the boring lull of a 9-5 was an (almost) welcoming change of pace. This time was different.
Discovering Villain’s identity was supposed to be a good thing. And it was, Hero agreed internally. It gave them an edge against an enemy who had remained undefeated for months now. As Hero, this was great. As a person trying to just get through their work day, this was horrendous news.
It wasn’t even the fact that Villain was their coworker that upset them. Their job was probably one of the most basic ones out there and there were a handful of roles and employees. It was surprising but not entirely unlucky. But did it have to be them.
It had been almost a year now since they tranferred over from across the country and honestly Hero was impressed that nobody had socked them in the face yet or at the very least found a way to shut them up.
All they ever talked about was Hero. Seriously, nothing else left their lips. ‘Did you see Hero on the news today? There was a fire; oh, was Hero there? Hero saved a burning building a few blocks down from me it was awesome. Honestly I’d kill a guy if it meant Hero would come face me.’
That last part left a particularly sour taste in Hero’s mouth, all things considered.
The hero took in one last deep inhale, willing down the urge to storm into that office building and start throwing punches, and opened the door. Civilian didn’t know Villain was their coworker. So Civilian should act like it.
Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long before Villain entered the scene. Their desks were close together, and the criminal made a conscious effort to be as sociable with their coworkers as humanly possible.
“Civilian! How’re you doing? How was the weekend?” Villain grinned at them, and Hero couldn’t stop the chills that creeped up their back.
Villain had always been an unparalleled criminal when it came to how sinister they were. The mastermind had terrified Hero and their team for around a year now, and they’d grown no closer to overcoming their horror every time they faced off.
Seeing them so cheery, so amicable, so sincere, felt worse than seeing them scowl and brood. They almost felt human.
“Oh, you know, the usual.” Hero forced out from within harshly gritted teeth. They didn’t bother asking how their weekend had been. Half of them didn’t want to know, and the other half knew the response would come no matter what they said.
Deep down, a part of Hero had wished that Villain’s injuries from their last face off would have been too severe, leading to them needing to take a break off of word. But, for some inexplicable reason, that felt mean to think, even though they’d never felt bad wishing ill on a villain before.
That was a thought: how many of Villain’s sick days had been Hero’s fault? How many times had the mastermind called in to complain about catching the flu, when in actuality they were busy fishing a bullet out of their own abdomen?
“I think this weekend might have been the best one of my entire life. Seriously, my heart could have just burst from the excitement!” The inflection and emphasis there didn’t soothe Hero’s anxieties at all.
“So, I went to the conference on Saturday,” they continued. “And Hero noticed me. Like, actually noticed me. I was in the front row — as you know, I always get to events super early — and we made eye contact! Twice!”
Hero’s stomach dropped like a hanged man in the gallows. They’d only just learnt about Villain’s identity moments before being thrust onto stage for a conference. Seeing Villain seconds later, staring right at them, unsettled them greatly. But they hadn’t thought they’d been obvious.
“You really like Hero, huh,” they commented, not entirely meaning to let that slip out. Villain looked noticably confused at that. Wasn’t it obvious?
“No, I talk about them because I hate them so much and I think they’re boring,” they retorted sarcastically, like a friend making fun of Hero’s funnily stupid comment. Like a friend.
Hero squinted slightly at the figure before them, uncharacteristically scrutinising (for Civilian, that is). This certainly wasn’t how they’d ever pictured Villain before, even with the familiarity of their facial features aside.
“You have bags under your eyes. Did you sleep well last night?” Hero stated. Keeping up a cordial work relationship, they told themself. It might be tactical to have Villain’s alter ego trust them.
Villain hadn’t fought a hero within the past three days, them being tired wasn’t to do with Hero’s meddling, so of course it would make sense to check. Maybe they’d find a lead, discover important info on a rival villain. That’s what it was.
“Oh, yeah, sorry, I was up pretty late last night. I promised Coworker I’d help her work through a few files, and you know how she is. Dropped the whole load onto me,” Villain laughed cordially. Hero grimaced internally.
Fuck, they did do that, didn’t they? Villain was an irritable coworker who prattled on endlessly about their own very narrow interests. Hero this— Hero that— et cetera et cetera. But they were far from a hostile one. They offered to help with tedious assignments quite often.
Hero didn’t know whether to soften up or raise their guard. They seemed so authentic, so genuinely willing to help people. It could have all been an act, true, but there was more than little doubt in Hero’s mind about it.
Maybe that was the point, they argued within themself. Maybe Villain knew this whole time, and this was part of a ploy to get Hero to trust them. See, Hero, I’m just as nice and sweet as you are, now hand over the documents.
“You know, we should meet up some time, after work I mean.” Hero regretted the words before they even tumbled out. The last thing they wanted to do was hang out with Villain, even if it meant a tactical advantage. But they needed to know. Needed to scrutinise. Needed to evaluate this threat.
Villain looked equally as shocked.
“Really? Us? I mean, I’m totally free, of course, but you’ve never really seemed that interested in talking outside of work. Trust me, I’ve tried to sway you on that, but you’re always busy or tired.”
They fumbled over their words a bit, seeming eager to accept but aware that eagerness would come across as slightly tacky. Just how much of it was an act, Hero contemplated.
“My, uh, friend told me I should be going out more, getting myself an actual social life.” Not a lie, Sidekick had berated them about their workaholism. “You’ve always been nice to me, despite all your— you know, and I just thought it might be nice to return the favour for once.”
You’ve always been nice to me.
Villain beamed at them and Hero swore they could feel their skin actively creeping, goosebumps swarming like insects spread all over their arms.
They hated Villain. They were a cold, sinister and calculating figure who never even seemed to blink an eye at the atrocities that they’d ensured befell their enemies.
They hated Villain’s alter ego. They were obnoxious and overly talkative, obsessed with a celebrity that would never love them back just to fill some gaping hole inside of them.
This discovery should have exemplified their hatred. How dare Villain prove to be capable of showing sympathy and care only to disregard it when it became inconvenient for the job. How dare they claim to care so much about Hero when they spent their double life carving wounds into their skin.
Instead, Hero was intrigued. They needed to understand this more, to look at Villain’s psyche as a whole and see exactly which parts of the machine had made them them. The facade of the detached criminal mastermind was oh so one dimensional. And they had just proven to be anything but.
“We could meet at one of the coffee shops down the highstreet if you’d like. I know you’re quite peticular about your coffee orders, hah. But I’m flexible with anything, honestly. Uh— except for my place. It’s, um, just so messy there all the time, I’d be embarrassed,” Villain offered.
That last part was clumsy. They didn’t want Hero to be around there because there were probably too many nefarious documents and terrifying armed men at each door. Were they baiting Hero into pushing? Were they worried their new friend might discover their inner self too quickly?
Which one was the inner self, anyways?
“Anything’s fine with me. We can talk more about logistics after the meeting,” Hero glanced down at their lock screen, viscerally aware that they were about to have to speak to a hoarde of potential clients after this fiasco of a morning.
“Oh— right! Right! Your meeting, of course. I forgot, that’s my bad, you should go get prepared for that! I’ll be at my desk if you need me; good luck buddy!” And then Villain was gone, smiling and not at all subtly fistbumping the air.
Fuck. Screw all the life-threatening heroics; this job might actually be the death of them.

Why you should watch War of The Rohirrim - SPOILERS!
Fellow reylo, haladriel, nashuri, darklina, etl and villain x heroine shippers, everyone is sleeping on the new etl ship that dropped 😭
If you're looking for a new ship to add to you armada, here's why you should watch Lord of the Rings: War of The Rohirrim! Spoilers ahead!
Childhood friends turned enemies
They are proper enemies, not rivals. 100% enemies! They fight. They go to war with one another! Her Father kills his and in turn he slays her brothers and ensures her fathers death. He tries to make the fortress she and her people are hiding in 'her tomb'.
"I can't show weakness. Not to her."
He proposes to her TWICE!
"Would it be so bad? [Marrying him] We were inseparable once."
"From the moment I first saw you, I knew you would be my doom."
They each have a scar that the other gave to them! Héra scars his face accidentally as a child. Wulf scars her ae on purpose as an adult, right after the line 'was I so easily forgotten' because HE DIDN'T WANT HER TO EVER FORGET HIM! Just as he's tormented by her memory every time he sees the scar on his face, she'll suffer the same.
"Did I disgust you so much? Was I so easily forgotten?" - Wulf
"I never forgot you. I tried to find you." - Héra
For their final battle, Héra wears a wedding dress to psychological mess with him. He wanted a bride, so she gave him a bride who comes promising death. When Wulf's General tells him 'that is bait, that is literally Wulf with neon flashing signs. Do not take the bait!!' Wulf takes the bait. Héra knows how to goad him.
The villain is in love and definitely obsessed with the heroine
Definitely a darker etl ship. Wulf ain't no Mr Darcy, that's for sure
Héra admits to caring for him and struggles to kill him.
Despite this care, she dosen't want to marry him (or anyone) as she firmly believes they should have a choice in such matters + the movie points out the draw backs of marriage for her (need to leave her home and her family, children taught traditions not her own) + she craves freedom and ends up becoming a sheildmaiden.
She does agree to marry him the second time to save her people, but after she said 'if I marry you', Wulf takes offence. He really wanted her to want to marry him.
As children they bonded over not having a mother in their lives. Found that out in an interview.
Sadly, this does end in tragedy as Héra is forced to kill Wulf. HOWEVER! That is why we have fanfic!! That being said I do have a theory that Wulf wanted Héra to kill him and pretty much reenacted their childhood fight from the day she scarred him, forcing her to kill by giving her no other choice.
In conclusion... please watch this. It's really good. The movie was awesome. And I do think you'll enjoy the wuléra (Wulf x Héra) dynamic.
Prompt #227
Civilian held their breath. Their focus should probably be centered on the hero just thrown through their coffee shop’s window, now brawling with one of the many criminals reigning chaos outside. Instead, all their brain could concentrate on was the scent of toasted cinnamon wafting of their regular’s neck as they protectively bracketed Civilian behind the counter. They peered with clenched jaw over a stack of paper coffee cups, oblivious to Civilian’s pining stare.
“I specifically told them to avoid this block,” they muttered under their breath, possibly not even realizing the words had been said aloud. Then their gaze was directly on Civilian, smoky eyes clouding the barista’s head and closing up their lungs. “It’s alright. I’ll stay with you until it’s over.”
prompt #22
“You really are beautiful,” Villain said, tilting their head to the side, a sadistic grin spreading across their face. “Imagine how pretty you’d look chained to my wall.”

Weapon of choice
A/N: Thank you so much for reading and for this request, sweetheart! You asked, so I shall write it :) Hope you'll enjoy reading this!
Warnings: bad flirting(?), teasing, a couple smooches.
Hero was the absolute worst.
Or so they felt every time they made Villain blush so bad their nemesis looked like they'd pop an aneurism any second. Hero felt terrible, really did.
But they couldn't help themself - Villain looked too sweet for their own good. The way their skin flushed made Hero feral. Villain didn't help their case - with the way they would bite their plump bottom lip when flustered or run a hand through their deep brown locks. Delicious little thing.
Their costume only made matters worse - black latex hugging their form in all the right places, the mask covering half their face, leaving out enough to spark curiosity but remain a mystery, still. It was more than Hero could handle - intrigued beyond belief but left starving for more.
They layered it on thick. Seizing Villain from behind and pressing up against them, whispering into their ear, breath hot against Villain's skin. And Villain? Villain remained unresponsive. They would blush, of course. Mutter something under their breath or try to stammer something out loud when they feel fearless.
How dense could Villain be to not have figured things out by now? The blatant flirting, Hero's obvious infatuation, the teasing remarks, and, at times, direct expressions of interest - all went right over Villain's head. It was becoming frustrating, in all honesty.
