ROUND 1 — Match 104 of 138
Audrey Redheart (Wandersong)
Problematic because: "She's the person chosen by an angel from God (called Eyala and Eya respectively) to literally end the world. By killing monsters with her awesome magical lightning sword. And she doesn't care that she is literally ending the world, actively dooming it and making the world worse until it all comes crashing down in one final cacophonous note. Because she's never been special until now. But now she's special! She's the hero! And no matter how much the main character begs her to think about the consequences of her actions. To even try waiting, let alone helping in a non-destructive way? She reacts with callous dismissal at best to violent retribution at worst." Propaganda: "Well, I mean… She's still a person. Everyone wants to feel special. Everyone struggles with finding their place in the world. If you got handed a sword by an angel from god and sent to kill monsters, isn't there a part of you that would at least consider it? She's powerful, famous, instantly beloved wherever she goes. The player characters literally have to beg her for help at one point because she's the only one who can do something. And she does! She keeps. Almost being it. Almost being nice, almost agreeing to try to change, to listen, to help people. She saves a city from monsters! But when the chips are down, and she has to choose between the spotlight and letting the world cling on a few minutes more… She made her choice when she picked up the sword."
vs. Fiddleford McGucket (Gravity Falls)
Problematic because: "He's an ex-cult leader and general havoc-wreaker. He built a gun that erases people's memories. Originally he intended to just use it on himself after a traumatic incident, but he immediately used it on his best friend when he tried to convince Fiddleford to destroy the device, so that he wouldn't remember he hadn't destroyed it. Over the next several months Fiddleford began "helping" more and more people who were distressed about one thing or another, until at some point it shaped up into a proper cult that kidnapped unwilling victims and erased their memories. This gave most of the citizens of the town brain damage from how often the gun was being used on them, and eventually Fiddleford's members turned against him and he completely lost his mind. Fiddleford also sicked a "homicidal pterodactyl-tron" on his ex-wife when she left him, terrorized the protagonists with a robotic sea monster, destroyed "half a town" with an 80-ton "shame bot" when a friend didn't come to his retirement party, and built a giant robot used for evil by the antagonist of season one. For a couple of those, it's unclear whether that was before or after the memory gun damaged his mind." Propaganda: "He's such an interesting character if you take the information we have about him seriously. He seems inclined towards building evil robots from the get-go, but he just wants to invent things that help others and is so plucky and upbeat. The whole memory gun thing is a clear metaphor for drug addiction, and it's such a sad moment learning this character you thought was comic relief's backstory. I could go on all day about him but I just think he's neat."
Who should advance?
