As a Hymenopterist, I have tirelessly and profoundly made great strides and efforts to spread wasp positivity. Entomologists in general are trying to change the public image of these misunderstood insects, but we still have a long way to go.
I saw a post on Facebook of someone saving a Delta sp. (Potter Wasp) from a birdbath and placing it on a rock to dry and fly away. The comment section was riddled with misinformed idiots saying that they kill any Hymenopteran that isn't a bee. Someone said that it was a hornet, and to kill it. 🙄 I HATE anthropocentrism so much. Any animal that is mildly inconvenient to humans, or that isn't fundamentally cute gets the death sentence.
I am so tired. It's so discouraging seeing uneducated people with a total disregard for ecology/biology, and nature in general. You don't have to love wasps, you don't have to be enamoured with them, but they deserve respect and are the reason bees even exist.
Trying to educate hundreds of misinformed people on the internet is a losing battle, especially when it falls on deaf ears. I try my best to spread the love through my art, cartoons, and photography.
I hope that one day, there will be a newfound appreciation and fascination for wasps, and a conservatory effort to protect them. They are so important to the ecosystem.
I just needed this space to vent a bit. I get so frustrated seeing uneducated comments and opinions about wasps, especially when said commenters know absolutely nothing on the subject, but so boldly state erroneous information about them.
