Finally finished Vol 2 of ST and gotta say⌠I feel many stancy shippers are blowing things a bit out of proportion with where things currently stand at the end of ep 7.
The jncy breakup was beautiful. I now see why the Duffer bros hyped it up in interviews. Props to Natalia and Charlie for nailing it. Ironically enough, them breaking up is probably the most jncy thing they could do. It wasnât to free Nancy up to fall into Steveâs arms or tie the love triangle up with a nice bow, but to answer the thesis that their relationship started with:
Parents who got stuck in miserable marriages now devoid of love, maybe even never really loved each other in the first place. But they married nonetheless, followed the script to have kids and a house, then die still miserable. Jonathan had the ring and everything!
But they didnât do that. Jonathan un-proposed. They were honest with themselves and each other and realized if they let their relationship continue, they wouldâve continued the cycle, like they said they wouldnât.
So first, yes, it 100% a breakup. A mutual, peaceful, loving one in the middle of an apocalypse, so theyâre not exactly going to fully âsplitâ right now. Thereâs more important things to focus on.
Secondly, Steve being brought up during this break up is very telling.
It brings up a question the audience likely had (the love triangle
It therefore gives Nancy an honest chance to address it (Does she return Steve feelings? Is she going to leave Jonathan for Steve?)
It shows that Steve is a real âthreatâ to the relationship, i.e. that whatever hints of feelings/attraction from Nancy toward Steve are legitimate because they are noticed in universe
It puts that whole thing to rest, amen
Jonathan asks if Nancy wants to see other people, like Steve. Nancy hesitated again. It was likely a mix of her parsing out her and Jonathanâs emotions about this subject before responding. It is a sore spot for them because, as we all, their relationship is technically the one that formed out of Nancy & Steveâs. They were first.
So, Nancy is honest. She does find Steve attractive. He has nicer hair than you, Jonathan, and he makes me laugh. But heâs not the reason they are breaking up.
That is big for the story to clarify for the audience because it absolves any potential future rekindling of a relationship between stancy of baggage or blame from the ashes of jncy. They werenât the cause of it.
Nancy isnât breaking up with Jonathan because she wants to date other people or, specifically, Steve Harrington. Sheâs ending the relationship because she and Jonathan are different people who want different things out of life, and in the end, are different people that love and care for each other deeply, but whose life goals are not aligning.
That is also what Nancy meant when she said she and Steve are different people.
Thirdly, Nancy was not making fun of Steveâs âsix kidsâ comment. If anything, it came off as endearing, as a shared loving joke among friends about another friend like, âhe would say something like that,â because thatâs so Steve. It was in no way malicious or cruel or meant to mock.
Nancy brought it up as another example to show what she means by âdifferent peopleâ knowing what they want out of life. Steve apparently already knows he wants a big olâ family. Nancy only knows she wants to go to Emerson and hasnât quite figured out her life beyond that. Maybe she wants to get married, but not like her parents. Does she want kids? Has she ever really thought about it? Does she want to get back with Steve? He makes her laugh and it feels like she barely does that these days, and he does have great hairâŚ
You see what I mean? Nancy is a teenage girl becoming a young woman. This is her coming of age story but itâs set in a sci-fi apocalypse. If the main story ends with her single and then perhaps, maybe kinda sorta hints at some sorta relationship with Steve or someone in the epilogue, great. Good for her. I hope sheâs happy in the future, has figured out who she is and what she wants out of life.
Her and Jonathan have taken that first step and both were happier for it. Who was there to help Nancy to the other side?
Stancy endgame?
um, duh!
