And this is how religious people should react when someone comes out to them
Re-blogging this from myself cause I wanted to add the most important part: before that first pic she acted like she was 100% on board with her granddaughter being gay while her granddaughter was there and I think that’s great. She had misgivings about it based on religion and upbringing but she cared enough about her granddaughter to not be an ass about it to her granddaughter. And all the above is after she’s out of the room. Who you are is not your gut reactions. It’s what you do with them.
i also wanna point out that when she says “god doesn’t make mistakes” she doesn’t say, “so elena can’t possibly be gay” she says it in the context that therefore if elena’s gay then god meant for her to be so i guess he doesn’t have a problem with it
I think about this tweet every single time I see this advertisement
His Dark Materials, Episode 4: Armour
BRAVE KNIGHT
At the age of 19 Padme Amidala was the queen of a planet and had already saved her people from total crisis
At the age of 19 Anakin Skywalker was married and a general in a galaxy wide war and was considered to be one of the most powerful Jedi in history
At the age of 19 Leia Organa was a senator in the imperial senate as well as a leader and spy for the Rebellion
At the age of 19 Luke was making vroom vroom noises with his toy planes
I love him so much
Reblog if you empathize with Luke
At Luke’s age of 19, Uncle Owen established the longest record of holding back the tidal forces of Skywalker bullshit, besting the previous record of 22 minutes set by Obi Wan Kenobi
I realize I have barely stopped complaining for four months, but I honestly think that if anything we should be talking even more about how Marvel’s first two phases gave us one female superhero each, the token woman on each of their two teams (nothing so much as a solo movie, don’t be silly, we had to wait ten years for that), and in the culmination of the Infinity Saga, both of those women were thrown off a cliff.
We as audience had to watch them plummet to their deaths. We had to look at their lifeless broken bodies at the bottom of a mystical space ravine. We were supposed to see one of those deaths as something to cheer for in its heroism. We had to accept that an abuser’s claim of love that the recipient denied was still love, and had exactly the same import as the love of a best friend.
We had to see men feel Emotions at the top of those cliffs in the immediate aftermath of these women’s deaths, and then see men with romantic interests react with rage and violence at each loss. We didn’t get to see emotional reactions about the value these women’s lives had held. We had to hear that even when everyone else can be brought back to life, there’s no way someone can ever be freed from the soul stone, and these women were just the necessary casualties of this plot device.
And then they had the audacity to give us that all-women fighting scene, which should have been a rousing moment for those of us who are invested in female characters, but instead rang fundamentally hollow, when Natasha wasn’t there and the Gamora who was there wasn’t the one we had followed through multiple movies of growth. That scene told us that all women are interchangeable, and now that we have enough OTHER women the two we started with aren’t necessary and their absence doesn’t even need to be acknowledged within the scene.
Of course neither character is missing from the future of the MCU; Civil War-era Natasha will be in the Black Widow prequel movie and pre-GOTG1 Gamora will be in GOTG3. But the characters the audience has formed attachments to are permanently gone. They didn’t get to say goodbye to people they cared about. If they were mourned, we didn’t get to see it.
I get that it’s a movie. I get that it came out over four months ago. But we should absolutely still be angry. They both deserved better.
this very much. samesies that I haven’t really let it go and I’ve already written rants about this but I still feel this way very much, okay!? and the way it’s phrased here in the top paragraph really cut right to the essence of how insulting and traumatic this is
and I’m going to crib from some things other people have pointed very well and just add that the all-women fighting scene is the epitome of using women’s bodies as carefully arranged props, to be seen and not heard. I hadn’t thought before of how much that is true of Gamora’s death scene in part 1 as well, because she rightfully protests that what Thanos feels towards her Is Not Love, and her words are pushed right off the Murder Women Cliff along with her body.
and the point about both of the women we lose being our two og female team members? excellent. people had a lot to say about endgame being a movie about the og avengers team and insert explanations why it’s okay then to leave out Okoye or Carol or Valkyrie etc, but how does the loss of Natasha fit in there? it’s the celebratory send-off for the og team of avengers that launched this incredibly ambitious and successful series of films, and the most heroic and impactful place for our og female team member is broken on the ground hundreds of feet below her male counterpart? cool. thanks for the #feminism, marvel
#idk i just think about the pictures of those little girls with stars in their eyes at the premieres so excited to see a girl superhero!! #being part of the team!! #and then dead at the bottom of a cliff is where they get to see their role model end up #why is this the rep we are giving to our kids #they deserve so much more god this makes me so mad
This is something so important that I think a lot of us older female fans shouldn’t forget. A whole generation of girls have grown up watching first Natasha and then Gamora on-screen, only to see both characters - their superheroines - end up this way in IW and Endgame. I can’t imagine what it would have done to us if at the end of Return of the Jedi, Leia had laid dead at the bottom of a cliff while Luke and Han survived the movie.
This hit me like a truck.
It’s so easy to rely on the fact that these movies are PG-13, and think of the audience as at least teens. But they’re not. The toddler- and kid-sized shirts we see at Target have audiences. The child-sized Halloween costumes exist for a reason. There are kindergarteners playing Avenger on the playground, and until the last year or two girls’ choices were pretty much Gamora, Natasha, or sidekick. And those are the only characters dead with no recourse and no memorial.
Kids want to be superheroes. Endgame told them their options are supporting characters who only show up at the big fight for a Moment, or corpses at the bottom of a cliff.
Millionth thought about “Burn” I’ve had this month: Eliza goes for Hamilton’s jugular – but not by repeating the insults we’ve heard before, (arrogant, loud mouthed, obnoxious, son of a whore, bastard, etc…) She rips Hamilton up on the thing he’s most known for, what he’s most proud of – his WRITING. His SENSELESS sentences, his SELF OBSESSED and PARANOID tone. She’s tearing him up about not just the CONTENT of the Reynolds Pamphlet, but the way in which he wrote it. She takes the time in the middle of her rage to mock his style, which is such a rap battle move.
And what is she going to do with all of the beautiful writing he gave her over the years, his letters?
Burn them.
I think about this LITERALLY of the time. About how she pushes the button she knows will kill him.
“not only did you totally drag our names through the mud, and ruin our reputation, it wasn’t. even. your. best. work.”
^^^^^^^^^ killed ‘em ^^^^^^^^^
Okay but that isn’t even the most hardcore part:
The entire play is a fourth wall-breaking battle for narrative control of personal and professional legacy. That’s what it’s about. Conventional wisdom — and basic logic — states that history is written by the winners. Hamilton: An American Musical shows us the battle for that proverbial quill.
Literally the first song tells us “His enemies destroyed his rep/America forgot him” because up until the release of this play, Alexander Hamilton’s legacy was mostly overlooked by the average American, largely thanks to folks like Jefferson and Madison underselling his contributions after he died.
(This is also why Jefferson isn’t shy and awkward in the play. While that would have been historically accurate, the point is that the modern perception of Jefferson is that he’s a Big Fucking Deal. Because he made himself look that way.)
So the characters on stage are constantly fighting to make their version of events the version of events.
Burr is the narrator because this is his opportunity to tell his side of things. “History obliterates in every picture it paints, it paints me in all my mistakes.” He’s saying that in the end he LOST the fight for narrative control. And yet — and here’s the fucking amazing part — the mere act of explaining this to the audience CHANGES OUR PERCEPTION OF BURR and alters his place in history. God Lin is too smart for his own goddamn good.
(“History has its eyes on you,” Washington says, putting a very fine point on things. And if you don’t think he also means there’s an audience sitting watching this play, you’re not paying attention.)
So, let’s talk about Alexander, his obsession with legacy, and his tried and true method for controlling the narrative:
Writing.
In “Hurricane” he says “I’ll write my way out! Write everything down far as I can see! … Overwhelm them with honesty! This is the eye of the hurricane, this is the only way I can protect my legacy!”
“It doesn’t work” you might say, going by the contents of “The Reynolds Pamphlet.” Except… it kinda does. “At least he was honest with our money!” the company sings. Which was really Alexander’s main concern, after all. Think of his priorities in “We Know” where his first instinct is to gloat because “You have nothing!” It’s not until a beat later that he even considers Eliza.
He published the Reynolds Pamphlet because he didn’t want people to think he was disloyal to the United States. His concern was with his professional legacy. And in that sense… he succeeded.
(He succeeded in another way, too. Listen to “Say No To This.” (God I could write a 40 page paper on that song alone.) This is where we actually hear the contents of the Reynolds Pamphlets. And how does the song begin? With Burr explicitly handing narrative control to Alexander Hamilton. “And Alexander’s by himself. I’ll let him tell it.”
Every line of dialogue from Maria is prefaced with Hamilton saying “she said.” That’s because HAMILTON IS WRITING HER DIALOGUE. Hamilton is creating this character of a sultry seductress in red, coming to him when he was weak and luring him to adultery. Maria Reynolds in the play not a character, she’s a fantasy, created to excuse Hamilton’s transgressions.
It’s worth noting at this juncture that Maria Reynolds, the real woman, wrote her own pamphlet. No one would publish it. She was silenced. And Hamilton’s depiction of her as a morally corrupt temptress became the dominant narrative.
So suck on that literally any time you want to fucking blame Maria for Hamilton’s affair: good job, you’ve bought into a serial adulterer’s lies about a battered woman. Also don’t do that, I swear to god I will come for you.)
SO. What does any of this have to do with Burn?
In the very end, it’s revealed that it wasn’t Jefferson or Burr or Hamilton in control of the Almighty Narrative.
It was Eliza.
The very last second of the play is Alexander Hamilton turning Eliza to face the audience. She sees the people watching, and she gasps. Because she did this. She’s the reason this play exists. She’s the reason Lin Manuel Miranda is telling us a damn thing about Alexander Hamilton, she’s the reason Hamilton got a massively popular zeitgeist musical.
Now. Throughout the course of the play Eliza sees all these people weaving their important stories and she thinks she’s somehow… outside. She’s not a statesman, she’s not brilliant like Angelica, she’s just a wife and a mother and she has no place among these giants. At one point she LITERALLY ASKS HER HUSBAND TO BE INCLUDED I’M GONNA SCREAM.
And yet she never had to ask. She was in control the whole time.
And how, how did she do it? How did she “keep” Alexander’s “flame?” By collecting and preserving everything he WROTE, of course. Making sense of it all. She spent fifty years on the project. Everything she collected BECAME THE NARRATIVE.
But you know what wasn’t in there?
That’s right: those letters she burned.
So she didn’t just insult him, oh noooo. Eliza WHOLESALE OBLITERATED A PIECE OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON FROM THE NARRATIVE.
And not just any piece. “You built me palaces out of paragraphs, you built cathedrals,” she sings. In “Hurricane” Hamilton lists his letters to Eliza among his greatest accomplishments, (conflating his writing them with actually BEING HER HUSBAND, god what a self-centered prick). “I wrote Eliza love letters until she fell.”
Eliza says: “I’m burning the memories, burning the letters that might have redeemed you.”
The best pieces of Alexander Hamilton: gone.
God I’m gonna go curl up in a ball and freak out about this some more. FUCK.

Me, taking a few things from a show/movie to add to the imaginary world in my head and then never watching that thing again:
“Sir, I can has fish?? Thank you, kind Sir!”
Translation:
[weasel? comes up to a fisherman]
Fisherman: Friend, what do you want? [weasel sniffs at a closed bucket with fish] Hungry for some fish, aren’t you? Maybe I should give you a fishing pole? Eager beaver. Let me open it. [weasel is busy digging under the bucket. fisherman gently pokes it] Hey, there is a lid up here. Come on, pick any you want. [weasel grabs a fish and runs away] Hey, no “thank you”? Well, you’re welcome.
I’m NEVER going to get tired of watching Russians interact with wildlife
I grew up with Harry Potter and deeply love the characters-
But JK Rowling? She’s an absolute cunt.
Here are some of my headcanons that would deeply enrage her :
- James family was Indian, therefore Harry is not white.
- Harry is bisexual
- so is Ginny
- Ginny is a raging tomboy and cut her hair short. Harry loves it.
- Hermione is black
- Luna is asexual and genderqueer
- Charlie is ace aro, he sends Molly Christmas cards with baby dragons on them, titled “the kids” (saw that prompt on tumblr somewhere one day)
- Draco Malfoy was raised into a system he couldn’t get out of. He was just a scared kid, not an ultimate evil bad guy. Also a raging homosexual.
- I wish I could headcanon Cho Chang to have a less racist name
- The stairs to the boys/girls dormitory open themselves to trans students.
- Newt Scamander is asexual
- Ron is a stay at home husband
- Do I even have to talk about Remus and Sirius? Estranged and tragic lovers. The angst.
- Parvati comes out as gay after the ball disaster in the fourth book
- Tonks...Extremly free spirited, no labels kinda person
- Teddy Lupin is a gay punk Hufflepuff
- Pansy is a lesbian and also not the ultimate bad guy
- Overall more diversity in Hogwarts. You’re telling me that school was 99% white? I’m calling bs.
- Neville is straight and cis BUT he bonds with the gay kids at school after he starts helping kids with shitty homelives. He makes it possible for kids to stay over the summer break. He basically adopts all of them.
Tell me your headcanons that would enrage Rowling.
One that I cling to with increasing adamence is that Teddy is genderqueer (and a Will Wreck You-Protective of Their People Punk).
And that 98% of Hufflepuff is some kind of queer, and will throw down for people, or get them brownies, depending on how shit rolls.
We take the My Parents Kicked Me Out ones, the Don’t Call Me Ma’am ones, the I Only Want to Hold Hands ones, the They/Them ONLY ones, the I Think I’m In Love with Them Both ones, the This Morning was He but This Afternoon is She ones, the No Son of Mine—I’m Not A Boy, Dad ones, the I’m Not Sure ones... ...you know “the rest.”
what’s the betting that potterwatch was just a radio project lee jordan was doing in his spare time and never actually stopped after the war
“Harry Potter was spotted at the local farmers market today, good choices in produce Harry! Gotta love the organics”
he’s the only reporter harry will talk to other than giving official statements when he has to as an auror
“I’m speaking to Harry Potter today after the long-awaited conclusion of the trial of quadruple murderer Waldorfus Grenoble. Harry, may I ask you a question regarding the trial?”
“Sure, Lee, I have to be back at work in ten but give it a go.”
“What is in the curry you had for lunch yesterday during the recess? It smelled fantastic and I have to know.”
“Thanks for asking, Lee. I’ve recently come across a book of my great-grandmother Priyanka’s notes on her Punjabi cooking and I’ve been trying to recreate her food. I liked that one but Ginny said it was too sweet so I’m making adjustments.”
“Fantastic. Great stuff. Next up we have an update on You-Know-Who’s whereabouts. Not Voldemort obviously– he’s six feet under, it’s been around 2500 days now and he’s still going strong, no sign of him being not dead any time soon.”
“You’re correct, Lee, he’s dead as a doornail and he’s going to stay that way. You do realize you don’t need to refer to your infant daughter as ‘You-Know-Who,’ right?”
“Sophie starts screaming if either of her dads talks about her and we don’t know why. Any suggestions, and any idea where she is now?”
“Oliver was walking her up and down the hallway outside the World Cup Regulatory Office last I saw her. As for the screaming, with James we gave him the miniature dragon from the Triwizard in ‘94 and that entertained him pretty well.”
“You heard it here first folks, Harry Potter thinks dragons are an appropriate substitute for pacifiers! Thanks for your time, Harry.”
“Any time, Lee.”
“Next week’s password is anything that will make our six-month-old go to sleep for longer than four hours. Signing off, this has been Potterwatch with River and the man himself, Harry Potter.”
I finally found this glorious post
I really love how the Potter fandom writes material that is frequently miles better than Rowling’s actual text

More Detective Wayne AU stuff
After Bruce’s first day at the police academy he calls Alfred like “is being white and racist a requirement for being a cop because Alfie you won’t believe-“
You think Batman has zero patience? Detective Wayne has even less chill
He doesn’t dress up as a Bat so he has 1000% more the right to judge everybody who does dress up. Especially villains.
“It’s dedication!”
“It’s spending an unreasonable amount of money on Aesthetic™️ Harvey. Now, please, put down the gun.”
Bruce still tells Superman to get out of Gotham. He doesn’t need more costumed idiots. And no, Gotham doesn’t need a Justice League approved hero thank you very much
Since Ra’s doesn’t percieve Bruce as anyone super interesting, he doesn’t really care about Damian either. Therefore Talia gives Damian to Bruce and they have shared custody and Damian grows up happy and loved and his parents spoil him
“sTiCk TO tHe FUckINg PrOTOcOL, WaYNe!”
Bruce Wayne, recent detective, will run into a hostage situation without a bulletproof vest

I’m having a bit too much fun with this post (seen on facebook, not sure of OP).

And going on Oprah to talk about how he paid off all of the lunch dept for the whole of South Central Gotham School District, but instead he talks about how he is trying to figure out which little mom and pop place in the neighborhood with the Saudi refugees has the best kulfi, but he’s absolutely going to figure it out, and that episodes boosts the tourism to that part of the city, spawns 43 foodie bloggers to trek there to rank different middle eastern food, and the influx in cash even brings up the property values without having a bunch of white property barons gentrify the shit out of it.

“I was watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine and they have that episode where the squad have a baseball game against the firemen, and it hit me! I could make sure Gotham’s finest can put up a good fight against Gotham’s bravest, so, I’m sponsoring a new point board for when you play!”
Commissioner Gordon looked from the Bruce Wayne’s proud smile back down to the piece of paper in his hand. “Mr. Wayne, we don’t—“ Jim bit off the futility of telling the man that they did not, in fact, have the time or resources to fan the rivalry between the GCPD and GCFD with baseball games, incredulity struck by another point. “Mr. Wayne, how much to do you think a scoreboard costs, exactly?”
Wayne’s face dropped marginally and he scratched the back of his neck. “It was just a guess; I can write another check if that doesn’t cover it.”
Gordon controlled his eye roll with difficulty, replying, “I expect that this check would *more* than—“ Wayne cut him off as soon as the reassurance landed and clapped a hand the commissioner’s shoulder that nearly sent him off balance, immediately bright eyed again.
“Excellent! That’s great news, that’ll, uh... that is...” he was looking past Jim’s shoulder distractedly, and Gordon glanced over his shoulder to see a striking woman in a greenish dress making rather heavy eye contact with the man in front of him and gave into the eye roll this time.
“Mr. Wayne, if we were to buy a—a *scoreboard* with this, the remainder would—“ Wayne cut him off again, distractedly, “Right, right, if there’s any left over, you can use it for, uh, uniforms or...” he waved a hand vaguely, his focus certainly not on their conversation any longer. “Would you kindly excuse me, Commissioner? There’s someone whose acquaintance I would rather like to make.”
Commissioner Gordon stepped graciously to the side, allowing the billionaire to make his way towards the woman in green. He shook his head in resigned, mild disbelief as he folded the check and tucked it carefully into into his inner pocket.
When he was leaving the fundraiser an hour or so later, his path took him past Wayne, with the gorgeous brunette in green on his arm.
“Say, Commissioner,” Wayne turned to him as he paused to set his glass down on a nearby table. “Do you think I could get a police jersey with my name on it? Maybe number 20?”
It took Gordon a moment to realize he meant a police *baseball* jersey, but then he huffed a laugh. “You know, Mr. Wayne, I think this might just cover that,” he said tapping the check for four million dollars in his pocket. Wayne gave him a bright smile and a casual salute before turning back to his companion.
Later that night, Jimmy turned the weary superiority of a teenager know knows better than their hapless parent on him. “Dad, Brooklyn 99 doesn’t even *have* a baseball episode.”
(I mean, I don’t think it does, but I haven’t actually seen all of it. And the 20 is totally an inside joke with himself about D&D.)

I am inordinately fond of the idea of Chaotic Good Bruce Wayne who eeeeeeeh, yeah, sometimes is a violent vigilante who dresses up like a fucking bat, because Just Watch Me.
Who, like, is genuinely chaotic in how he does good, and deeeeeply gleeful about making people thing that Bruce Playboy Wayne is a fucking idiot while he does it. Like, full on Scarlet Pimpernel level idiotic foppishness while Taking Care Of Business.
Who is incredibly smart, and figured out that if he goes around obviously, purposefully tearing the foundations of the stranglehold that various corporations and the mob has that he’d end up dead, just like his dad. But if he donates to group of unions on the docks that makes them band together and kick out most of the mob? When an intrepid reporter comes to him with what they think will be their big break and he’s like, “Uh, no, I gave some money to the Onion. You know, the news site? Oh shit, wait, those are spelled a lot alike...” //Bruce Wayne Supports Gotham Dockhands Union// turns into //Bruce Fricking Wayne Thinks The Onion is Real News//. Aaaaand then he off to accidentally fly his drone into the side of a building, gee, hope my insurance can pay for a new AC unit for them, but did you see the sweet pic he got of the bridge he got before it crashed?
A Bruce Wayne who says something offhand in an interview about this boyfriend he had, and as the interviewer’s head is visibly in the process of exploding, Bruce goes, “I mean, and the time, neither of us realized he was a guy, but I’m lucky we stayed friends after we broke up. I get to go to his wedding next April,” and then starts rambling about how he’s thinking about buying a boat for his ex-boyfriend’s honeymoon. A Bruce Wayne whose companies’ insurance covers HRT and gender affirming surgeries and who “discovers” one of his CFOs is a transphobe on national tv, and his response is, “Ew, Chuck. Don’t be a bigot. You’re fired.” And “Ew, Chuck,” becomes #EwChuck and reaches nearly the heights of Ok Boomer.
Except this is a Bruce Wayne who would get every single one of Chuck Tingle’s books printed, bound in leather with gold leafed pages, and keep them in his penthouse living room. He has a $400 T-shirt that is the softest thing you will could possibly imagine, with THE GOOD CHUCK written it above this graphic.
Like, he feels bad about #EwChuck, because Chuck Tingle is a fucking genius.
