Its frustrating when non-horror people come into horror spaces and ask why we like violence and watching people suffer and sexism and all other manner of moral hand-wringing, but i also find it frustrating when horror fans (myself included) attempt to sincerely engage with these questions. Like 9 times out of 10 the question is either being asked in bad faith, or the asker is genuinely confused, and neither of those types of people are prepared for a proper answer about how horror reflects the cultural landscape or the complex relationships between the genre and gender and race etc and they definitely aren't ready to hear about the real facet of sexuality and eroticism in basically all horror media

horror is an easy target for pearl clutching but you can subject pretty much any genre to the same criticism if you frame it poorly enough. Oh you like romance movies? So you enjoy watching men stalk women and violate their boundaries? You think cheating is okay? You think its cool when women give up their careers to get married? I dont like or watch romance movies but based off my limited understanding thats what they're all like, etc

i think we need to just start responding to bad faith questions about horror with "yeah i thought it was awesome when The Killer fed all those teenagers into a wood chipper"

I haven’t stepped foot in the tag for a bit as I’ve moved on to a new fandom, but as my major hobby is figure collecting, this re-ignited my Feelings for the game and I figured I’d pop into the reddit sub and engage in some discussion about it.

Having a lot of thoughts about this, lemme try and organize them in point form:

- In the two camps that like/do not like the nendo, there are reasonable and unreasonable takes.

- the two camps are constantly talking past each other and addressing only the unreasonable opinions.

Reasonable:

(Nay) It’s OK to find the death faceplate and the circumstances around it upsetting, and not wanting to buy it. Anya’s fate was very sombre and grounded in realism despite the fantastic setting, and that resonated with a lot of people not least in part of similar trauma.

(Yea) Wanting to buy and display merch says nothing about the owner as a person, simply that they enjoyed the game and want to see the physical representation of a character they liked and even identified with on their shelf (perhaps because of similar trauma!)

Unreasonable:

(Nay) People who want to buy and the devs who want to make merch of a SA victim are bad people and rape apologists.

(Yea) People who dislike the nendo are senstive snowflakes, it’s a game, it’s not that deep.

No one likes being called snowflakes or rape apologists, especially when it isn’t true. Please, keep things *civil*, we are all fans of the game and want to support similar projects.
