sae taking care of his wife while she's on her period ୨ৎ
being married to sae itoshi during your period meant one thing:
sae noticed everything. even the things you tried hiding, especially those.
“you didn’t finish breakfast.”
his voice came from the kitchen doorway while you sat curled beneath a blanket on the couch, heating pad pressed weakly against your stomach.
you sighed softly without looking up. “i wasn’t hungry.”
sae didn’t answer immediately, which usually meant he was thinking.
a few seconds later, you heard quiet footsteps approaching before the couch dipped beside you gently.
his hand rested against your forehead first out of habit, then your cheek.
you nodded weakly, that was enough for his expression to soften instantly.
the thing about sae was that he never reacted dramatically. he wasn’t loud with concern. wasn’t overly expressive. instead, he became quieter, gentler, more attentive in little ways.
“did you take medicine?” he asked.
“did you eat enough with it?”
sae stared at you for a moment. “…you didn’t.”
you avoided his eyes immediately.
eating during your period always felt impossible once the cramps got bad. every bite made nausea curl tighter in your stomach, leaving you uncomfortable, exhausted, and too drained to even think about food for long.
but not eating only made you weaker afterward. and sae knew that too.
“food makes it worse sometimes,” you muttered quietly. “my stomach hurts.”
his brows furrowed slightly, not annoyed at you — never at you, just frustrated that you were hurting.
without another word, sae stood up again and disappeared back into the kitchen. you expected him to lecture you, instead, ten minutes later, he returned carrying a small tray.
soup, cut fruit. tea, simple things, easy things.
“sae,” you sighed softly, already knowing where this was going.
“you need to eat something.”
he set the tray down carefully before sitting beside you again. “a few bites,” he said quietly. “that’s all.”
you frowned slightly at the food. “i’m not hungry.”
his answer came immediately, gentle, understanding.
and somehow that made your chest ache more. because he understood, sae always understood more than he said out loud.
you looked down at the heating pad against your stomach, blinking hard when another cramp twisted painfully through you.
immediately, sae noticed, his hand slid carefully over your lower stomach beneath the blanket, warm palm pressing there gently. instinctively comforting.
you nodded again, his jaw tightened slightly. he hated seeing you in pain, even more when there wasn’t much he could do to fix it completely.
for a moment, the apartment stayed quiet except for the rain tapping softly against the windows outside.
then sae reached for the spoon again. “…open.”
you stared at him, he stared back calmly.
“you’ll refuse otherwise.”
unfortunately, he was right.
you let out the smallest laugh under your breath before finally opening your mouth enough for him to hand you a spoonful of soup.
sae looked unbearably satisfied afterward.
“don’t look at me like that.”
“like you just won something.”
you rolled your eyes weakly, but the corners of your mouth still lifted slightly, and sae noticed that too. of course he did.
carefully, he brushed a piece of hair away from your face before speaking again, quieter this time.
“…you don’t have to push yourself through this alone, y’know.”
your expression softened immediately. because sometimes you forgot that, forgot you didn’t always have to pretend you were okay just because your pain wasn’t visible to everybody else.
but sae noticed anyway. the exhaustion, the discomfort, the way your body curled tighter when cramps got worse.
he noticed all of it, and he never once made you feel dramatic for hurting.
another cramp hit suddenly, sharper this time, and your face tightened before you could stop it. instantly, sae moved closer, one arm wrapped carefully around your shoulders while the other stayed over your stomach beneath the blanket, grounding warmth against the ache.
“c’mere,” he murmured softly.
you leaned against him immediately, exhausted, his chin rested lightly against the top of your head. steady, safe.
for a while, neither of you spoke. he just stayed there holding you while occasionally reminding you to eat another bite or drink some water between cramps.
quiet care. that was sae’s version of love. not loud words, not dramatic gestures, just staying, just noticing. just loving you gently through the difficult parts too.
and later that night, when you finally managed to eat a little more before falling half asleep against him, sae pressed a soft kiss against your forehead and murmured quietly,
like he knew surviving days like this took effort too.
