New Hunger Games book

I only just finished re-reading the trilogy not so long ago.

The new book will be 64 years before Hunger Games, which totaly rules out Finnick being back, but maybe Mags will be back, I think her games would have been around that long ago.

Wanted to do something stupidly crazy, so here it is…..

If you had full control to change up to 5 things about The Hunger Games trilogy, what would you change?

Going on first instinct (so I don’t overthink this and take forever):

1. FINNICK DOESN’T DIE!!!

2. Take out that scene in Catching Fire where Johanna disrobes in the elevator. I’m a good Catholic girl and it just makes me uncomfortable, especially in the movie. (Yeah, I know, there are a lot of other way more horrible things in this trilogy, but this is pretty much the only one that feels gratuitous).

3. Fix the ending of Catching Fire so it’s easier to understand what’s going on. I was so confused the first time I read it.

4. On a similar note, make Katniss’ motivations at the end of Mockingjay much clearer. It took me a while to figure out why she voted to continue the Hunger Games and why she killed Coin. And that’s such an important part of the book that it can’t be something that needs to be debated among the fandom.

5. Extend the epilogue so we get to see Katniss enjoying life with Peeta and her children. So many people think that this betrays Katniss’ character, but I think it’s mostly because it’s reduced to a couple of sentences at the end of the book. Give us the chance to see that Katniss is living in a world with more love and life after suffering through so much hatred and death, that she wants to have these children in her life. Replacing a culture of death with a culture of life is kind of the point of the series. Children are absolutely necessary for this to be a fully happy ending. Spending just a bit more time with it could have made it clearer that it’s not a betrayal of Katniss and her story, but the ultimate fulfillment of it.

There’s few things I get more satisfaction out of on this blog than calling out shit that honestly, no one should notice, so it gives me a sort of beleaguered pleasure to check photoshop like i’m checking my watch and announce that the three high-profile snake-based cover drops from the past days/weeks that have everyone going “Lol so many snakes” in fact use the same snake. Either the same stock photo or 3D model, based on the identical shape and lighting patterns of the scales. The QUEEN OF NOTHING one had me fooled with the purple coloring, but the head and nose highlights still identifiably match the QUEEN OF THE CONQUERED snek which you can see in my highly professional mockup that took me approximately 15 seconds:

I’m not saying this is “bad”, just worth noting, although as with my Desire typeface spiel i do think blatant examples of design resource homogeny within such a small community (and in this case, within weeks of each other) are marginally embarrassing, but more than anything I’m curious how this happened! I can only assume it’s a new asset that was released on a common stock site and happened to be seen by three different designers* who rightfully all went “aw shit that’s dope gotta use that somewhere” and then promptly…. did.

(* tho both QUEEN books are published by Hachette, albeit different imprints. NINTH HOUSE is Little Brown/ Macmillan.)

This actually happened at a book publisher I used to work for right out of college. We were all excited about this Cinderella book that had a GORGEOUS cover design with this mask as part of the masquerade in the book. And then a Cinderella book released the same month by a different company WITH THE SAME FLIPPIN’ MASK. omg. Book design is a funny thing.
