Chapter 1 of the Nova Generation Rewrite
Just putting this out here that most things I post here are rough drafts that I just want nice feedback on.
Twenty-five years ago, a star fell from the sky, landing in a forest.
The crash caused the destruction of that forest and an energy signature not seen before on Earth appeared all over the world.
Five years later, children born the year of the crash were seen with abilities that were divine.
Fire that was only rivaled by the Sun Goddess Amatarasu.
Strength akin to the Greek hero Heracles.
And water manipulation like the dragon Ao Guang.
They were like gods, and soon they revealed a truth about their world.
The gods that humanity worshipped for millennia were real, and a new age was born.
Children with these powers were given the title of Nova, and they are all across the world, roaming with power no man has been able to replicate.
An abandoned building in New York, January 23rd, 2045
A boy with messy black hair, a white shirt, baggy black pants and sandals sat in an old room, surrounded by books about mythologies.Â
The Iliad sat near a now broken vent, covering the Odyssey.
A copy of the Prose Edda stayed hidden under his bed.
Near the corner of his room, a thin childrenâs book titled âThe Zodiac Raceâ laid flat.
âAjesh! Iâll check if I can get a job today!â he yelled out into the building, but there was no response.
The boy stretched and walked out, looking through the rooms of the two story building.
âGuess he isnât here. Mustâve already left for his demon hunting job.â
He walked through the top floor, picking up a can of soda from a fridge along with a page that had a prayer on it, along with a picture of a monkey-like god holding a gada on it.
âShri Guru Charan Saroj RajâŠman this is too hard! How does Ajesh read these every day?! That's how I know we're not related!â he exclaimed, putting the paper back on the table he picked it up from.
As he walked through the building, a shadow of a monkey-like figure followed him, replacing his own shadow.
It had golden eyes and stood tall, almost observing the boy.
âWhy canât I join Ajeshâs job! This is so annoying. Iâm stuck here while he gets to blow up shit for fun!â
After he finished the soda, he threw it in a trash can and sat on the edge of the first and second floor.
Suddenly, the doors blasted open and two police officers walked through the door.
They held their guns in front of themselves and one yelled out, âCOME OUT! YOUR UNDER ARREST FOR DISTURBING THE PEACE, STEALING, AND ASSAULT!â
The boy stood up and remarked, âSo you guys found me? Thatâs a shame, I was hoping to repeat that whole thing again next week.â
His shadow looked like a large monkey with glowing gold eyes, and the cops jumped back when they noticed it.
âOh yeah that thing happens sometimes. Donât worry about it.â
The boy jumped down and the officers kept their guns pointed at him.Â
âYouâre coming with usââ the officer on the right told the boy before getting kicked in the face by him.
âNah! Besides you canât beat me, I taught myself Taekwondo,â the boy exclaimed before punching the cop on the left.
He was smiling from ear to ear, but then he was shot in the arm.
âYou forgot to disarm us,â the officer said as he stood back up from the kick.
âWhat the hell man! Iâm only fifteen!â
âYou're only fifteen and you stole one hundred dollars worth of groceries from the nearby store?â
The boy nodded, and the officer that got punched by him asked, âWhatâs your name?â
The two officers looked at each other and nodded in recognition.
âYouâre the younger brother of that demon hunter, Ajesh right? Two years older, always wearing an oversized shirt, just using explosions?â
Sanzang nodded and they reluctantly put away their guns.
âYour brother does a lot for us. Weâll let you off with a warning.â
âYou better or Iâll kick your ass!â Sanzang exclaimed, but then a boy two years older than Sanzang in an oversized grey shirt with black pants similar to Sanzangâs walked up to them.
He put his hand on top of the boyâs head and pushed him down, telling him, âDid you get in trouble again?â
Sanzang nodded and Ajesh shook his head in disappointment.
âSorry about him, officers. Iâll keep him out of trouble.â
âYou still have to pay for the damages,â one of the officers said, rubbing his face from Sanzangâs punch.
âWill do,â Ajesh replied before walking away from them and tugging Sanzang by the ear.Â
He pulled Sanzang upstairs and pointed to his room.
âGather your things weâre leaving. Iâll go pay for your damages,â Ajesh told his younger brother.
âBut why itâs not likeââ
âJust trust me, letâs just leave. Pack my stuff too. I'll be out for a minute.â
After an hour, Ajesh and Sanzang put on their backpacks filled with their items.
Ajeshâs bag had money, snacks, clothes, his along with Sanzangâs, and drinks in it.
Sanzangâs bag had a Gameboy, games, the books from his room, and the papers that he read that morning.Â
The two walked through a forest, and Sanzang asked Ajesh, âWhy can't I go demon hunting with you?â
âBecause you can't fight against them,â Ajesh replied.Â
âBut I'm good at fighting!â
âThrowing a good punch won't kill these things. You need proficient access to your Soul.â
âOh not this again! Just because you were blessed with some magic powers doesn't mean you can bullshit new words!â Sanzang complained, provoking a chuckle from Ajesh.Â
âYou're a Nova. But you don't even know for whom. That's the only thing I need to know to be 100% sure that you're not ready to fight demons. Can you manifest a Divine weapon, huh?â
âYou take something around the size of your weapon, and just make it stronger. Very simple concept,â Ajesh explained to Sanzang, but the boy tilted his head.Â
âAll I know is that I have a shadow with golden eyes following me around. It's annoying honestly.â
Ajesh laughed and said, âI had that too. The first time I said a prayer to Shiva, my Nova, followed me around in the form of a shadow. But that was ten years ago.â
âI know, you screeched like a bird when you noticed it,â Sanzang replied, smiling from cheek to cheek.Â
They reached a small abandoned building and Ajesh remarked, âJust like home, huh?â
The two walked in and set their bags to the side.Â
Then they saw five copies of the same person with gray staffs that had golden ends in different areas.Â
Each of them had black hair, a hoodie with its sleeves rolled up and track pants, along with white sneakers.Â
Ajesh cracked his back and Sanzang bounced on his feet lightly.Â
I'll try posting weekly, but can't make any promises.
