i think the reason why zutara is so popular is bc that first scene where zuko and katara are in that cave together alone is misread as romantic, when in reality it’s motherly.

katara instinctively acts like a mother, this is very clear from day one. she sees that zuko is just struggling, so she tries to help him by being compassionate and… motherly. (and i think zuko rejects this bc the last time a motherly figure tried protect him, she suffered for it… i mean there’s other reason but i think that’s a part of it.)

but bc of that good ol heteronormativity, ‘a boy and girl were civil to each other, this means they’re in love.’
