Okay I'm Going To Elaborate Now. A lot of the Deltarune fandom thinks that "the pointed tail," "the Tail of Hell," and "the tail that must not be followed" are the same thing. I understand why; if there are three (3) tales of potentially plot-relevant tails introduced in the same Chapter of a story, it makes sense for those tales to be about the same tail. And a tale about a Tail from Hell that the poor children Should Not Have Followed sounds pretty evil. What I think a lot of people forget to consider is the context that surround these tails.

The pointed tail is connected to Kris' trauma due to proximity to the art therapy Egg room. However, it is notably talked of in the past tense, while the other tails are talked about in the present or future tense. If the poor children already followed the tail that must not be followed, isn't it a bit too late to warn Kris about it? Especially if they were one of the poor children in the first place? The story the Organikk tells is also incredibly vague. Purposely vague for Doylist reasons, but vague nonetheless. "Lost where the forest would grow, the children followed the pointed tail. The poor children!" We have literally no way of knowing why the pointed tail led the poor children anywhere, or if it even knew it was leading them anywhere at all.

The Prophecy panel that says, "They'll see the Tail of Hell take crawl," directly juxtaposes, "They'll hear the Ring of Heaven's Call," in the previous room. And while Heaven is traditionally seen as good, it's not always a good thing to be associated with heavenly symbols in Deltarune's worlds. The words "ring" and "call" bring to mind Spamton, who was brought to ruin after he stopped receiving phone calls from his benefactor. It paints his Heaven as something fickle, something that chose to let him fall without warning. Notably, Noelle is also consistently paired with angelic imagery. She still has a tattered pair of angel wings in her closet, she wears angelic looking robes in the Dark World, her Heal Prayer spell (like Ralsei's) draws on heavenly light; she'd grow angel wings and fly away from everything if she could. She's also strung up in a crucifixion pose on one of Giga Queen's hands, and is addressed as "angel" by both a pink Addison and Spamton before getting a powerful ring on the Weird Route. Heaven is something that forces Noelle to become stronger on its terms, not hers.

And finally, "The tail that must not be followed." Like the tale of the pointed tail, this line is said by an Organikk. I believe it's notable that the Organikks are philosophers that study the Prophecy, and view it as objective truth to be worshipped. "The truth sung in glass. Amen." Like the Tail of Hell, the tail that must not be followed is juxtaposed by the Organikks with "the tale that must be followed." A story that can not be changed. The tail that must not be followed is directly opposed by the Prophecy. The same Prophecy that our main characters oppose.

I'm not saying that any of these tails are unquestionably good. But I do know that Susie, Ralsei, and Kris are all good kids at heart. And maybe, just maybe, the enemy of their enemy could be their friend.

i don’t know how to tell you this but literally the entire world has racist elements. you would be incredibly hard pressed to find any tv show — especially produced in the US — that does not have racist or otherwise obviously bigoted elements. the important thing is to identify, analyse & deconstruct those elements rather than to magically find something without them, because again, every tv show has been produced on a world fuelled by institutional racism, in the shape of those racist institutions.

some thoughts:

even before flowey, asriel was… good at being the right person in every situation. a natural social chameleon. with the dreemurrs, he was the perfect son to toriel and asgore, a sweet shy boy who wore his heart on his sleeve, while w chara he was a Teasing Brotherly Type who would join in on all their plans and schemes. he has to have been a better liar and better at acting than the crybaby comments suggest - he hid that he knew why chara was dying from toriel. i’m not suggesting that he was, like, sinister about it, just that he’s naturally good at putting up a front, conscious or not

and then as flowey, he refined that, used that, played with it. he was everyone’s best friend, everyone’s perfect confidant! in a way that actually echoes frisk, his first approach to everything was to Be What Everyone Needed - and then when reset after reset burnt out his hopes of something lasting that mattered, he instead used that to push everyone’s buttons. and he picked up a new persona - the cruel, tormenting flowey, who wouldnt care at all who he hurt, who had nothing left, who definitely didn’t miss anything as pathetic as feelings.

so at the end of undertale, when we see asriel go from Taunting Cruel God Of Hyperdeath to Sweet Sad Kid Who Made Mistakes But Who Loves You, when we see Asriel set up a clear dividing line between himself and Flowey that is proven a lie if you try to do a true reset and see Flowey plead w you to let everyone live their lives… when we see flowey clearly try to slip into Your Co-conspirator And Best Friend Azzy mode in No Mercy, and the mask slips at the end when he begs and it’s just Azzy…

if we see Asriel act like Flowey and Flowey act like Asriel, again and again, when the defenses drop…

do we really think it’s just the presence or absence of the soul that makes a difference?
