ok so a little while ago I got my local fire department's annual report in my mailbox, and because I'm a big weewoo nerd I read that whole thing cover to cover.

some of it was a breakdown of how they spent the taxpayer's money, of course. whatever, I skimmed it, looked fine. what I was really interested in was where they went into detail about the personnel they have, what their scheduling is like, and all that stuff.

turns out our firefighters are on a 48/96 schedule, so they have 2 days on/4 days off, with A, B, and C shifts alternating. there's a lot of detail about all the different certifications that everybody has & the number of hours of training they've done in various things. there's a LOT of training hours for the size of the staff - I feel like we should be hearing more about training and certifications on the show but I guess it doesn't make for sexy TV like bachelor auctions do.

and there's a ton of info about all the apparatus! like, I didn't realize we had 2 engines, I thought we only had 1, I mean I've never seen them both at the same time. (yes it's a small rural department we don't have that many trucks). And the ladder truck cost $1.2 million? damn no wonder the 118 got so much flak for destroying multiple trucks.

the incident breakdown is the other interesting bit. over 50% of calls are categorized as rescue/medical, with only 3% of calls being fires. there's a whole section talking specifically about water rescues and a bit about rope rescues too (bc we have a large body of water, rugged landscape, and a lot of idiot tourists).

anyway, I'm just saying, it's super interesting reading about real-life fire department logistics after spending so long fixated on a fictional one.
