Chapter 13
Keeho, apparently, was part of the Student Activities Committee.
But it seemed like he was a bit preoccupied by someone else.
“The caterers say they can prepare the food right there in the gym-” He tried explaining but got cut off by everyone’s favourite snob.
“That’s so boring! Why can’t we have Spring Fling on a boat?” Martin intervened. He seemed visibly annoyed at the whole world.
“Martin, a lot of people can’t afford 232,200 won for a dinner cruise.” Ohyul, being the reasonable guy he was, tried to get Martin to forget the idea of Spring Fling on a boat before he got the label of the next Jeff Bezos.
“Well then maybe they just don’t need to show up.” He shrugged it off.
“I gotta agree with Ohyul,” your eyes moved towards Keeho, “let’s just keep it at the school gymnasium.”
Martin’s eyebrows twitched slightly when you said that. “Fine.” He rolled his eyes and continued talking with Ohyul while actively ignoring you. Like he was trying to steal Ohyul from you.
“Thank you so much for tutoring me.” Your hands were a little shaky from how nervous you were. They held on tight to the bag in your hand filled with books and pens.
Ohyul opens the door to his house and invites you in. It seemed much more modest than whatever Martin’s place was.
“No problem.” He smiled. “I just have to do one thing before we start.” He walked towards the basement and you simply followed him.
It was a huge mess down there with piles of laundry and it didn’t seem like it belonged to just one person.
“This technically isn’t my actual house. I’m roommates with Louis, Ryul and Woojin.” He lets out a shaky laugh. “And Mr. Jay Park drops in occasionally.”
‘What a weird dynamic.’ You thought to yourself.
“So, do you miss living in Africa?” He asked while holding Mr. Jay’s underwear.
“Sometimes.” You smiled to yourself thinking back at all the good memories. “But I think I didn’t realise how lonely it was.”
“I’d love to visit one day.”
“Maybe I’ll take you sometime.” You internally cringed at what you just said and he proceeded to throw the last bit of cloth into the washer.
The two of you walk back upstairs to his room and settle comfortably.
“What did you get for this one?”
“Well, the first time I did it I got zero…”
‘No, that’s wrong.’ You thought to yourself in a stupidly loving voice.
“But when I checked it I got 1.”
‘There you go.’
The two of you were progressively getting closer as time passed by but then, the door to his room creaked. You both turned your neck towards it.
“Oh, didn’t know you had someone here.” Louis spoke in a soft tone. As his eyes landed on you, he smiled and waved, like a kid. “Hi Y/N.”
“Hi Louis.” You waved back. This boy was too sweet for his own good.
“You two know each other?” Ohyul’s eyes went back and forth between the two of you with a questionable face.
“Yeah, she helped me out a few days ago.”
“Help you out? With what?”
You could sense the downfall from a mile away if Louis told Ohyul the truth.
“That’s a secret.” He playfully laughed before closing the door and walking away.
‘Oh you sweet sweet boy, I’ll buy you ten pizzas for that.’
“What was he talking about?” Ohyul asked, looking at you with a suspicious look.
Before you could think of an excuse, another person decided to walk into the room.
“Oh.” It was Ryul.
“What?”
“Why’s she here?” He asked as his eyes landed on you.
“So I could tutor her.”
“What? Since when did you tutor others?”
“None of your business.”
“Sure.” Ryul rolled his eyes. “Have fun tutoring Martin’s girl.” He left leaving the two of you speechless.
‘Martin’s girl?’
“Is that true?” Ohyul asked.
“What, no! This is my first time hearing this.” You defended yourself. Being called ‘Martin’s girl’ genuinely felt like an insult.
“Must be rumors then.” He laughed it off.
After Ryul dropped that tiny bomb, you haven't been able to focus much on what Ohyul was saying.
‘Do people actually think Martin and I are a thing?’
If someone were to actually date Martin they'd have to be paid at least 10000 won hourly. He was the most high maintenance guy you’ve ever met!
“Why are you still friends with him?” You didn’t mean to ask him that, and yet you did.
“Who?”
“Martin.”
“Listen, I know Martin can be really mean but-”
“Then why do you like him?”
“Why do you?”
“But-”
“He’s just insecure. I mean there’s good and bad in everybody. Martin’s just more upfront about it-”
“But-”
You didn’t mean to. You really didn’t want to but as always, the words just came out on its own. “He’s talking shit about you behind your back.”

accidentally became the face of a protest to impress one girl (gone democratic)
syn : Martin accidentally ended up at the Jantar Mantar protest, what's next? pairing : Martin x f!desi!reader • contains : Idiots in Love • Jantar Mantar • Twitter Has Thoughts • POV: Your Situationship Survived a Water Cannon but Not Basic Communication • w/c : 2.6k tommy's notes : THIS IS COMPLETELY SATIRE PLS DON'T TAKE ANYTHING SERIOUSLY AND IF YOU DON'T SUPPORT THE PROTEST PLS DON'T READ JUST SKIP AND DON'T REPORT ME
There were exactly three things Martin was supposed to be doing today.
Filming a travel vlog for Coers.
Eating mangoes.
Not causing an international incident or stirring gossip.
He somehow managed to fail all three before noon.
"Where's Martin?" The manager counted as he noticed the usual height disparity wasn't present.
"...Guys? Why are there only four of you?"
Juhoon looked around for his twinski until Keonho spoke up.
"Didn't he say he was following a really fluffy dog?" Which was weird. Because it was Keonho who usually did that. Almost as if he set Martin up to disappear, but Keonho's kind and loving heart would never do something like that to Martin of course!
Everyone collectively sighed.
"Oh, he's gone."
It was the sigh of giving up.
Meanwhile, Martin was in fact, following a really fluffy dog.
"Hey buddy!" The dog looked back once and smiled at him. A small bark and he turned around and started walking off again, almost as if telling Martin to follow him.
"So we're friends now?"
The dog did not answer. It simply continued leading him through approximately fourteen different roads with the confidence of someone who paid taxes.
Twenty minutes later the dog disappeared and left Martin alone in a very unfamiliar place. The sight in front of him was truly something else. There were hundreds of people gathered with banners, placards, news vans, police barricades and more.
Someone on a loudspeaker passionately explaining constitutional rights.
‘I don't think this is the food street anymore.’
An uncle in sunglasses immediately shoved a placard into his hands.
"Good. You're here."
"I am?"
"Yes."
"What are we doing?"
"We're protesting."
"Okay." He didn't question further and just held onto the placard he was given. When he looked down to read what's on it–
‘First time protesting gang, kinda nervy’
‘What kind of a protest was this…’ He thought.
As his tall ass made his way through the crowd many people stared in awe. One of the reporters approached him with a mic.
"Where are you from?"
"Uh, am from Korea."
"And why are you protesting?" He pointed at the sign Martin still kept holding onto.
“Um, democracy?”
Another volunteer walked over.
"Can you help carry these water cartons?"
"Sure." He immediately placed the placard in the hands of the reporter and took the carton in his hand.
"You don't even know what we're protesting for, do you?" The reporter noticed as he held onto the placard that was passed to him.
"I don't. But everyone here looks like they're trying really hard."
"Fair enough."
And within thirty minutes the Indian Twitter had discovered him.
Everything was confusing him and he didn't know what to do. Obviously standing at the protest itself was gonna ruin his reputation and cause problems but he had no idea how to get back to the hotel either.
He walked around aimlessly. That was…until he met you.
You were kneeling on the pavement with two permanent markers tucked behind each ear and one in your hand, trying to rescue a protest banner that someone had painted in Comic Sans.
You looked up as a tall shadowy figure blocked the sunlight.
"Oh."
"Oh." He looked down at what you were doing.
"Can you write neatly?" You asked. You had no idea who he was and couldn't care less.
"I have idol handwriting."
"That's somehow worse." You handed him the marker anyway since you didn't have much choice.
Five minutes later the banner looked museum worthy with perfect spacing and perfect lettering.
You narrowed your eyes at it.
"You definitely color inside the lines."
"Not what I usually do, but yes.”
"I knew it."
It was lunchtime and you'd unofficially adopted him since he had nowhere to go either. He revealed his true identity as the two of you walked among the crowds and surprisingly to him, you did not give two shits. Your mind was too focused on making sure the government was held accountable rather than knowing there was a kpop idol right next to you.
"No, don't stand there."
"Why?"
"TV cameras."
"Oh."
"And drink water."
"Okay."
"And sunscreen."
"Okay."
"And don't argue with aunties."
"Why?"
"You'll lose."
He laughed as he underestimated the aunties. "You can't lose to aunties."
Three minutes later he regretted everything that came from his mouth. An aunty walked over carrying a steel container.
"You look skinny."
"I'm actually–"
"No. Eat." She stuffed two parathas into his hands.
"But–"
"Eat."
"I–"
"Beta."
"Yes ma'am."
Twitter immediately received photographic evidence and lost their minds like usual.
As time slowly passed by, unfortunately, lowkey Korean man had developed a crush.
It happened while you were passionately explaining why everyone had shown up to Jantar Mantar. You spoke with your hands and your eyes lit up. You accidentally got paint on your nose while helping others with their banners and seeing you in your element like that, he forgot how breathing worked.
He didn't feel like a global idol anymore. It was as if he lost all that confidence and became a pathetic loser.
(The narrator would like to clarify that he has known you for approximately six hours)
He was already mentally planning your wedding playlist while realizing he needs to listen to more Desi music to add to that playlist.
The next morning Martin woke up with one objective.
Impress you.
For completely normal reasons of course. He wanted to help out with the protest for all the right reasons. Yes, the right reasons. Nothing fishy about it.
Need fifty chairs arranged?
"I got it!"
Need bottled water distributed?
"I got it!"
Need somebody to climb onto a suspiciously unstable bamboo structure?
"I GOT IT!"
"No." You grabbed his hoodie.
"No?"
"No."
"Okay." He reluctantly backed off.
By noon everyone at the protest knew him.
"Water Guy!"
"Banner Guy!"
"K-pop Beta!"
One uncle whispered dramatically. "I heard he came all the way from Korea to support us."
Another uncle whispered back. "I heard he got lost.”
The chai seller nodded wisely. "I believe the second one."
Then, the police began moving everyone back and the mood shifted.
People linked arms while the chants became louder.
Martin instinctively looked for you and you were somehow already looking at him.
"Stay close."
It felt like this was the perfect time to use his loud voice as he shouted slogans in a language he didn’t even know, praying his pronunciations were okay.
It obviously wasn’t, but you were able to hold in the laughter. It’s the thought that counts after all, right?
Soon enough, a few large trucks were stationed in front of the crowd. You were too busy with something else to notice it, but Martin did.
The water cannon that the police had brought activated and the crowd collectively went. "Oh COME ON!"
A massive blast shot toward your side. You barely had time to react.
Martin's last functioning brain cell screamed, ‘IF SHE GETS WET SHE MIGHT CATCH A COLD’
He launched himself dramatically in front of you without thinking with one more brain cell.
FWOOOOOOOOSH.
The water hit him with enough force but hey, at least he'll look cool in front of you right?
No. He ended up toppling over and taking you down with him.
Somewhere in the distance a child pointed. "Mummy look!"
"Beta don't laugh." His mom scolded him.
"..."
"Okay, you can laugh a little."
"Martin!" You exclaimed trying to push him off of you. It looked like he almost passed out. His hair which he had spent 20 minutes styling had become completely flat. Looking like a disappointed wet puppy.
"I think I saw tomorrow."
Twitter exploded once again.
Then came in the lathi charge as people were pushed back. Nothing severe where you stood, but enough to make everyone move away quickly.
You stumbled on your feet and Martin immediately stepped between you and the crowd. A baton clipped his shoulder.
"Ow."
You grabbed him and walked further away. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah." He flashed a smile that oddly reminded you of Varun Dhawan.
"You literally squeaked."
"I squeaked heroically."
You dragged him toward the medical volunteers even though he kept protesting.
"I'm fine."
"No."
"It's just a little–"
"No."
"I can literally–"
"No."
The volunteer smiled. "She's right, you know."
Martin looked between both of you. "I've been outvoted."
That evening the two of you sat on the curb sharing lemonade. The atmosphere had calmed unlike how it was during the day. Someone nearby started singing while someone else distributed all kinds of food. The same aunty from yesterday reappeared out of nowhere.
"I brought more food."
"How did you find me?"
"Aunty GPS."
You nodded solemnly. "It's real."
He looked at you as he munched on the food given to him.
"I think you're really cool." You spoke up, without even looking at him.
"What?”
"You got hit by a water cannon for me."
"I also got hit by the ground."
"Mostly the ground."
"Yeah."
You laughed so hard you nearly dropped your cup.
Dangerous. Life-threatening. He immediately decided this was his favorite sound.
“You know, you’re pretty cool too.” He said, with a strange loving emotion in his eyes.
“Yeah, I know that.” You simply shrugged your shoulders. It felt as if he was only complimenting you back because he felt obliged. But that wasn’t the case at all.
“No like, really. The way you aren’t scared to stand up against people in power for the sake of the nation. Of course, not just you but everyone else that showed up too.” He quickly clarified, hoping you wouldn’t get the wrong idea.
“If not us, then who would? I can’t just sit here in my privilege knowing someone else is fighting for my rights out there and that’s the case with most of us I suppose.” The mood had shifted to a bit more emotional and patriotic state. Watching everyone unite, no matter gender or religion, after such a long time truly felt special.
“True, but it also feels like everyone just wants to have a fun time here.” Martin said as he looked at the crowd dancing around like it was a club.
You laughed again, blessing his ears.
“Alright, get up.” You declared, standing up from the roadside. “We’re gonna join them!”
You held his hand and dragged him into the crowd while the banger songs continued. That felt like a night neither of you would forget. Unlike most romances, neither of you had any weird tension going on, everything felt comfortable around him even in middle of a political crisis.
The next morning his phone buzzed.
MANAGER (47 missed calls)
WHERE ARE YOU?????
WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN SEOUL SOON.
WHY AM I SEEING YOU ALL OVER TWITTER AT A PROTEST!?
He blinked as he came to realise. For a whole day he had forgotten he was an idol. Spending time with you and everyone else made him feel like a normal human after a long time. The idol life was demanding and exhausting but it was something he loved.
You noticed that change in his expression immediately.
"You have to go?"
"Yeah."
Neither of you liked how quietly he said it. The people noticed the dejected looks on both your faces as you slowly led him away from the protest. On the way the two of you were stopped multiple times. The organizers thanked him. The aunties packed him snacks anyway. One uncle hugged him. The chai seller saluted.
Someone handed him the same protest badge he'd been wearing for two days. "You earned it."
"I'll keep it." He smiled.
Near the taxi sent by the company, you hugged him. It lasted exactly three seconds which somehow felt like both forever and not nearly enough.
"I'll find you again." He said with determination in his eyes.
"You better."
"I will."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
And with that he got into the vehicle and it slowly drove away.
You watched until it disappeared with all sorts of emotions running inside you.
"Wait." Your friend, who had accompanied you to drop him off, looked over.
"What?" You asked curiously.
"WHAT'S HIS INSTAGRAM?"
"..."
"..."
"I DON'T KNOW."
"You WHAT?"
"I FORGOT TO ASK!"
"YOU SPENT TWO DAYS TOGETHER."
"I KNOW."
"HE GOT FLATTENED BY A WATER CANNON."
"I KNOW."
"HE WAS LITERALLY TRENDING."
"I DIDN'T THINK OF IT."
Meanwhile, inside the taxi a similar scenario was playing out.
Martin suddenly sat upright.
"..."
"Everything okay?" The driver asked, looking at the mirror.
"I DON'T KNOW HER NAME."
"You what?"
"I DON'T KNOW HER NAME."
"You didn't ask?"
"I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE A TOMORROW."
The driver pulled over, not because of traffic. Because he needed a full minute to process this level of fumbling.
"Son."
"Yeah?"
"Delete your dating apps."
"I don't have any."
"Good."
"Why?"
"You clearly aren't ready."
Three hours later CORTIS uploaded a vlog of their recent trip to India. Fans expected sightseeing and Keonho crying over spicy food. Instead, the thumbnail was Martin carrying water cartons while looking deeply confused.
The company couldn't hide what was trending on twitter so they thought they might as well take the risk of a global war and posted up the video including the scenes of Martin at the protest, captured by him and other strangers around.
What was harder to handle than a diplomatic issue though, would be the dating rumors. Everyone on twitter had already seen you and him together and the company couldn't deny it. And so, they decided to post the video he took with you in that vlog too. They were ready to face war with the overly obsessed fans.
The comments were immediate.
Years later the protest badge still sat on Martin's desk. A little scratched and faded.
He never explained where it came from. He'd just smile whenever someone asked.
"It reminds me to stand up for people."
"...And to ask for someone's contact details before leaving the country."
Across the world you still had one blurry photo. A soaked K-pop idol wearing borrowed slippers two sizes too small, grinning like he'd just discovered the meaning of life despite looking like he'd lost a fight with a municipal fire hose.
You smiled every time you saw it. Perhaps the second best thing that came from the protest was a 6’3 wasian guy who could scream louder than anybody you’ve ever met.
