Who's that peeking through my window...er...round the corner... Just a peek at what I've been working on while under quarantine. To be 100% and some change, I dunno if the restaurant industry gonna make it outta this, it if I'd make it out while in the industry, so I've been grinding away at this project, eager to make my debut. I've also been eager to share sneak peeks, incidentally, so how y'all like it! And, hey, the recent COVID-19 pandemic got us all fucked up, but keep your chin up. I don't really have any answers cuz I'm an artist not a doctor damnit (little Star Trek reference there for all my nerds) but resorting to our base instincts ain't the move. So excited for the new movie!! Can’t wait to see Miles Morales’ Ultimate Spider-Man, so I had to draw this quick fanart sketch.

For this illustration, I wanted to challenge myself in four ways, and I focused on them in order of difficulty for me, since I wanted to expand my portfolio with quality work, and prove to myself I ain't afraid of nothin'. Firstly, I wanted to express my skills with the female form, and female fashion. I’ve always been good at urban characters, and warriors, so I decided to mix the two, get some practice with female styles, and push the limits of what I could do.

Secondly, I wanted to practice with animals. I got a kitten not too long ago, and his recent medical issues has me fearful for his life, so I wanted to make something to honor all the time he's blessed me with, no matter where the future goes. Here, I’ve made the figure more ethereal through the linework, to give an otherworldly feel. I don’t draw a lot of animals, but with my cat (and bigger ones on Pinterest) I had plenty of references.

Next, I wanted to focus on colors and shading, which has always been a problem for me. I actually practiced a lot on smaller sketches, which you can find here in various forms, and on my Instagram. I used Manga Studio for the full piece, and used the watercolor brushes for shading, along with ‘multiply’ layer settings layered on top of each other. I actually love the effect, and consider the shading my biggest win for this piece. I definitely feel I’ve leveled up here, and am way more comfortable with my next big piece.

Finally, backgrounds. Backgrounds, backgrounds, scenery, ffffffuuuu--!! Backgrounds!! Always the hardest thing for me. How'd I do? Personally, I love the level of detail I added, since I never do them. And the mood I gave it definitely ‘feels’ really broken and dilapidated, at least to me.

Dragonball Fanart! Trunks was my fave character, so I kinda wanted to put my own spin on his design. I gotta give it another shot later, but I gotta sleep now.
