why would a candle thats already lit want to be with a match
also her being lit is going to eventually melt her and reduce her to nothing match guy is an abusive sadboy who thinks he’s the victim when candlegirl just wants someone who will keep her alive
im here for this analysis
OR the match guy and candle girl had a prior relationship where he brought her out from a bad place with patience and kindness, meaning his qualities helped get her to a better place - he ignited her flame. And now, she chooses to be with someone, who will squash that flame and bring her back to a worse place.

YOUNG MAN
I suppose it’s a testament to Tolkien’s economy of language that the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy – interminable preamble and endless appendices and all – has a smaller total page count than the individual books of your average modern doorstopper fantasy series, yet manages to pack in such a high density of worldbuilding detail that reading it feels like it takes about a thousand years.
(For those expressing incredulity at the idea of Tolkien being an economical storyteller, one must understand that the ability to communicate a great deal of information very efficiently is a totally separate skill from the ability to get to the damn point.)
The day I found out the Twilight series has a higher word count (587,246 words across four books) than LotR (481,103 words across three books) was a dark day.
#thanks I wish I didn’t know this#it’s not the word count that matters it’s the Information Density#physically twilight might be longer#but it’s the lettuce of fiction#lotr is like being hit in the face by a produce truck
THANK YOU FOR THESE TAGS
been thinkin about this lately and i think i want a small life. not a BAD life n not an ISOLATED life n not a CLOSED life but just. small. with defined boundaries. i want a job that will sustain me that doesn’t require exhaustion to survive. i want a place to live that’s big enough for me to choose every part of it; just enough shelf for mugs i love, just enough cabinet for a neat set of paints, just enough closet for clothes i actually like wearing not just ones i tolerate. i want to do little routines and make small batches of things and be a regular somewhere. i just want to have something contained and clear that’s mine, mine, mine
Glad to see my lifelong disinterest in golf is paying off
let me tell you about golf
i grew up in a little desert valley called Tucson, Arizona, where it only rains 2 inches a year on average. the majority of the city’s water is pumped from an underground aquifer, which took millions of years to fill. one of the biggest conservation efforts in our city was for water, naturally, and i spent a lot of time learning about low flow toilets and 5 minute showers. i learned that filling your sink basin and washing your dishes in that water is less costly than running the tap. i learned that it only takes 2 days without water on the desert for someone to die
the city was sinking as the aquifer drained. neighborhoods fell into flood zones that didnt exist 10 years ago
there’s a road called Golf Links in the city and it is lined with golf courses. miles of green grass where grass doesn’t grow, in a valley where it doesn’t rain. why? because the rich white retirees who moved there to stop the aching in their joints decided they should also get to play golf. meanwhile our public schools taught small children like me that taking long showers would kill the world
let the golf industry burn
There are 15,500+ golf courses in the United States alone.
Each one consumes ~312,000 gallons of water per day.
That consumption is equivalent to 55+ million humans per day in the United States… roughly 1/6 the entire population.
We simply cannot sustain this frivolity, especially for something 99% of us will never use.
Destroy golf courses and plant wild grasses and butterfly bushes in their place.
autumn is really like. i brought you some sunlight from when you were 10. didn’t the world feel so bright to you then? i’ll drench your hands in syrupy nostalgia, so everything you make is stained bittersweet. i’ll ruffle your hair with an ice-kissed breeze–it’ll be the kindest touch you’ve had in years. you finally feel like a part of something grander. i’m the last warm hand you hold before winter surrender.
