i was def wrong about axab
I gotta ask, how do people, like, do stuff???
here’s what i’ve figured out so far:
-gotta have eat first
-gotta sleep enough first
(seriously so many days i’m like “i have all afternoon I’ma Do a Thing” and then i just kinda buzz around and do Nothing and think “WHY” and then i’m like “oh yeah i’m really fuckening tired”)
-gotta be Excited About It (ADHD brain only does things if they’re Literally the Most Interesting Thing Happening Right Now) (so like, hype yourself up to work on a project, or think about how happy you’ll be with a cleaner room/all those chores done)
-gotta have small, doable first step (like, “get cloth from fabric drawer” or “open google docs”
-FUCK distractions (computer is in drawer, phone is Off)
-Engage the Senses (if task needs Brain, play vague background Music, if task needs No Brain, listen to audiobook/podcast)
-maybe set time limit so i don’t get lost??? e.g. i have a little egg timer that i use because the ticking isn’t distracting but is enough to remind me that Time is a Thing that is Passing Right Now
-gotta have Self Awareness and Thinky about the Moment (get into the habit of Consciously Noticing what you’re doing at the moment, so you’re more likely to go “wait, this isn’t what i wanted to be doing” and be able to redirect)
-be willing to redirect and try to do something else if whatever you want to do Just Isn’t Happening
-DON’T beat yourself up for only doing part of something, or failing entirely- all that does is make your brain associate “trying to do stuff” with “well that SUCKED”. Which means you don’t want to try again. Tell urself u did good for trying, and if it didn’t work, try again later, or figure out why it didn’t work and try a different way. Reward yourself for trying
this is what i’ve figured out about cajoling the Thinky No Worky Brain into Doing Stuff. it’s not 100% reliable, especially if I forget to do some of these things (like SLEEP), but it’s what i got, ya know??
I wasn't actually expecting any answers when I made that post but damn this is really helpful, thank you <3
I think at some point in time we need to sit down and start explaining to artist who want to make a career out of art that there are FAR more options than just “living off of commissions” and “posting my art online and praying I get paid for it”.
There’s also far more options than joining a specific, difficult to get into industry.
I don’t know where this idea that the only way to make a living off of your art online is to simply do commission work, become a social media star, or join an industry comes from. I’ve fallen into this pitfall before as well, but I don’t understand how it came to be.
I broke out of this mindset, though after I started helping a working artist. She had been an artist for over 40 years and started at a young age, and her main source of income? Doing local craft and garden shows. She had owned a gallery, done gallery work, done charity work, and now mainly works in using upcycled materials to create all sorts of products.
I used to think that my only options as an artist were to become popular enough that people would commission me or just give me money via patreon, but that’s not the case. You can sell at craft fairs and conventions, you can provide a specific service, you can create assets and asset packs people can pay for, and you can create all sorts of physical or digital products to sell… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
If you are constantly turning art into a numbers game to see how you can make enough money by posting the right™ stuff online at the right time, you’re only going to make yourself miserable.
The best way to make a living off your art has NOTHING to do with popularity, getting lots of engagement online, or besting an algorithm, it’s all networking. It’s all about finding the right people who want what you make. If all you focus on is your follower count and post engagement, you’re just going to end up hating art.
“Having fun doesn’t pay the bills”, who told you that? Why did you believe them?
I’m seeing people reblog the original post without the addition and I think yall should reblog this version instead
Also I made a mistake, the artist I work for has been working for over 50 years, not 40.
Citizen Science and Contributing To Scientific Endeavor When You're Not "A Scientist"
Comments on some of my posts about science and misinformation express frustration with scientific establishments, and want to see more accessibility and attention given to amateurs participating in the scientific process and having their scientific voices heard.
If being involved in the creation of knowledge and discovery is something important to you, that's something I strongly encourage! It's absolutely possible. Amateur researchers with a passion and an eye for detail have made some fantastic discoveries - but what is often glossed over in stories like these are the years of work, the patient dedication, and the collaboration with university researchers that often underlie such discoveries.
The search for truth and information and the passion for science is present in a lot of people who aren't official "scientists" - curiosity is natural! And if participation in scientific observation, hypothesizing, experimentation, and discovering new things about the world is important to you, there are lots of ways to go about contributing - and the new year is a great time to start.
What are you interested in?
Ecology
Observing the world around you is for everybody. Getting invested in the environment of your hometown is for everybody. And, as the Mythbusters famously said,
Some ideas for a local ecology project:
Record the temperature outside every day at the same time - at sunrise, or noon, or sunset, or midnight. Depending on where you are, the local weather recording station may be miles away or on top of a mountain - measure the temperature yourself and compare it each day to what your app says. When is it accurate? When isn't it?
Record the weather every day. How much precipitation? What time of day? What kind?
Record what animals you see every day, where, when, and how many. Or choose a specific animal, like birds, or bees on flowers, or turtles or frogs in a local pond, or whiptail lizards vs. invasive house geckos, and record the numbers you see each day.
Record when in the year you see the first, or last, of a plant or animal. When the crocuses sprout, when the buds appear on the maple trees, when you see the first clover flowers or prickly pear flowers, when the first robin comes out or the first lizards come out of hibernation.
If you have an outdoor cat or a free-roaming dog, attach a GoPro or similar small camera to its collar to see where it goes and what it does.
Identify the plants growing in your neighborhood, and check in on it regularly to keep track of how each one fares in different weather conditions, or if any animals particularly like or don't like to eat it.
Bulk order some test strips, then take a small sample of soil from a local park or water from a local waterway each weekend and test them for PH, lead, chemicals, or whatever. See if it changes over the year, or after a heavy rainfall, or during drought.
Take a photo of the same spot every day for a year.
Linguistics
The study of how people use language! Everybody uses language in some capacity.
Do you have any small children near you? Talk to them! Record how they pronounce things and what they call new (or even familiar) concepts. Look for patterns.
Ask people you know if "dog" and "blog" rhyme, or if "Alohop" is a good pun for a pineapple beer. My family gets ENDLESS amounts of mileage out of this one with each other. Ask people you know questions about how they pronounce things, or what they call things. Make maps of dialectical differences between generations, neighborhoods, etc. Track linguistic shifts in the modern world.
History
Everyone and everywhere has a history, and accurate history is pressingly relevant always.
See if you have a local historical society, library archive, or history museum that is looking for volunteers to transcribe or translate collections.
Get elbow-deep in local archives. You likely have some sort of local archive near you that has not been fully digitized. Go in with a topic you want to learn about - Black families, Jewish communities, how your hometown transferred from Indigenous hands to settler ones, women who owned their own businesses, immigration, inter-racial relationships, sports, ice harvesting, farming practices, contemporary opinions on a major world history event that now seems so inevitable, sports and people's reactions to sports - and read everything in newspapers, wills, deeds, photographs, or other available records about your topic of choice. See if you can find connections that you haven't seen anyone else talking about.
These are just some things that occur to me immediately as something that anyone can do, if you're sufficiently interested in a question and want to discover more about it. The more local your topic, the less likely anyone has a solid answer to whatever you're wondering - and the more immediately relevant to the people around you your discoveries may be!
Combining it with a New Year's Resolution can also get you more motivated to do the things you want to do. Is your resolution to get more exercise? Take a brisk walk each morning and take a picture of the same area every day for a year. Take a walk every weekend down to the lake and count the turtles and frogs you see. Is your resolution to keep a daily diary For Real This Time? If nothing else, resolve to write down the weather and precipitation each day! Do you want to volunteer more or meet new people? Look for citizen science or local history groups! Feeling like you're working toward something Real is a great motivator.
Henry David Thoreau's detailed descriptions of the nature each day around Walden Pond in the 1840s provides a valuable benchmark for modern ecologists to compare environmental and climatic changes since then on a granular level. Silly rhyming poems and idiosyncratic spellings in letters and diaries help linguists track dialectical and pronunciation changes across time. Amateur science is great and valuable! We all can have a part in understanding and paying deeper attention to the world around us, if we want to.
Behavior-wise, one of the best animal behavior papers I have ever seen is this one, which details variation in individual preferences of cats using almost entirely materials you probably have lying around already, using the pet cats of people in the general population and the cats available at a local shelter. Beautiful work, cleanly designed. A citizen science effort to explore similar preferences in dogs, for example, would be much appreciated—or even a public effort to increase the data size of existing studies!
If you have animals around you, you can totally participate in citizen science with them. What parts of a yard do squirrels visit the most, and why? What kinds of animals visit your birdbath, and what are they doing there? How close can you get to a pigeon before it flies away if you approach it with different velocities and angles?
If you need to increase your sample size, get friends involved. Reach out to your local shelter and explain that you want to volunteer to do the crappier local jobs, and when you've been there a week or two and they know you're reliable, ask if they'd mind if you experimented with playing classical music to see if it calms the dogs down and explain your proposed design. See if you can get buy in. Read the literature that exists already and then see if you have any questions that you could answer with your own study. It's easier than you think.

OK Tumblr Geriatric Ward, let’s talk about your posture-
there are things you should be doing now to prevent yourself from starting to look like 🥀
Why does it matter? Future you would like to avoid the pain, limited motion, and fall risk that goes along with worsening posture.
What’s the focus?
1. Keep the flexibility in your spine
2. Stretch the muscles in the front
3. Strengthen the muscle in the back
Here are some simple things you can do daily while sitting and when you get up to go into the bathroom or the kitchen
Keep the flexibility by doing these repeated movements: 10 repetitions several times a day
The goal is to give yourself a double or triple chin. Keep your nose pointing forward, don’t let it tip up or down
Thoracic extension- use a chair with a seat back that comes up to the level of your shoulder blades. Try to bend back over the top of the chair without arching away from the seat back and without extending your neck. If the pressure from the top of the chair is uncomfortable you can place a towel there
Stretch the muscles in the front by using a door frame. This one will feel good afterwards
If this isn’t enough of a stretch you can do one side at a time. If you have the right arm up step forward with the right foot and turn slightly to the left. Then do it on the other side.
Strengthen the muscles in the back by squeezing your shoulder blades together for a count of 10 and then repeating 10 times. You can do this several times a day Hint: Don’t lift your shoulder blades up
There are lots more exercises for strengthening your back muscles but this is a good starting point and easy to do. I like doing it while driving
Tips:
Do the best you can
If it hurts stop
Envision future you saying thank you each time you do one of the exercises
NOTE: I can do most of these with the cerebral palsy. In fact, a lot of these little exercises are automatically part of my physical therapy. My problem is I already have hyperlordosis, spine arthritis, and cervicogenic headache. These have helped me at least try to have a posture.
on one hand, i agree that not all lgbt representation has to be "good rep". the work of a single lgbt person does not, and should not, carry the burden of educating every cishet that happens to read it. not every fanfic has to be a primer on lgbt experiences. that would be ridiculous. there's something to be said, though, about the vast lack of trans representation in fanfiction. genderbends (transphobic) do not count. the "dn & related fandoms" category has over 6,000 fanfics, excluding crossovers. adding the tag "trans" to your search shrinks that to <140 results. if you're an adult looking for nsfw trans content, you'll probably be happy with that. over half of the results are explicit, mature, or are not rated but sexually explicit. there's plenty of fic for you to read. most of it is iffy-- there's a lot of fetishization of trans bodies, there's a lot of dubious consent, there's a ton of om/gaverse (transphobic, but for some reason ppl can ignore that), and there's a wide variety of unhealthy or abusive relationships. but it's there. but what if you only want safe for work fanfic? if you exclude the explicit fics and those tagged with rape/noncon and underage, you're down to 77 fics. you'll have to be careful, though, because authors on ao3 have the option to not archive warnings -- there's still sexually explicit fanfic, underage fanfic, "nonsexual kink" fanfic, and rape/noncon that didn't get filtered out. there's genderbend aus you still have to sift through just to find the actual trans content. most of the work you will find, safe for work or otherwise, is not an accurate representation of trans lives or our relationships or our experiences. idk what my point is. it just sucks. and ppl will probably be like, "if you want more rep, stop complaining and create it yourself", bc that's what ppl always say in this fandom when someone points out a lack of representation (i.e mattcourse and the lack of fanwork focused on the women of death note). idk.
ro ramdin is so funny, I literally paused a video to say "shes so funny" before unpausing the video and watching the rest

Injectable Testosterone Note
Hey Uh FYI--- If you're on injectable testosterone and your injection site *itches* and stays swollen like a bug bite for several days after you do your shot? That can be a sign that you either have an allergy to the carrier oil in your serum, or may not be injecting properly. Either way, please talk to your care team about it! If the itching spreads to random parts of your body, then it is very likely an allergy. Testosterone serums are made with three different carrier oils depending on the type: Cottonseed, Sesame Seed, or Grapeseed oil. Cottonseed is the most common carrier oil and the one most likely to trigger an allergic reaction.
Good news is, you can switch your serum! If you're allergic to one, ask your doctor to switch you to another one! Seriously, I itched like a flea bitten beast the first few months on T and then switched my serum and the problem resolved!
Something interesting i spotted on twitter. For anyone interested in going on T!
People in the notes asking why this is directed at only people on T when this can help transgender and cis women too - it can! This thread is a direct response to a person on twitter who detransitioned from a trans guy, who then went on a rant about how testosterone made them “ugly” and how they lost a lot of hair and, in classic transphobic detransitioner fashion, tried to dissuade people from transitioning bc they will be stuck with the “ugly” after effects forever, like balding (Which, in itself, isnt an ugly trait!)
This person made a thread to show that even on testosterone, you can grow back hair youve lost…if youve done your research about it anyway!
somehow, amazingly, i have hacked the impulse that makes me mindlessly scroll on my phone. it's not gone but i've paired it with a conscious thought process that goes like, "what's my goal here? i'm looking for entertainment, for information, for something that makes me feel more optimistic and interested in the world i live in..."
and because that kicks in between apps, too, i'm not doomscrolling as much. i'm intentionally seeking out posts or videos or whatever that actually mean something to me. when i'm not satisfied i walk away or pick up a book instead. most subtle yet impactful change i've gone through in years
i did not intentionally set out to change this. i've just been working on my mindset in general. hey, turns out having a good therapist again helps
thank you to everyone who has liked this post for reminding me to keep up the habit. just caught myself doomscrolling and remembered i have a nice podcast i could be listening to instead

This is legit the only piracy guide I've seen on tumblr that is not full of terrible advice go read and do this rn or else
Kudos on making a PROPERLY HIDEOUS WEBSITE. This is how websites are SUPPOSED to look, not this modern sleek shit.
