Vivian Campbell’s real bastard of a guitar. A 1978 Les Paul Custom he bought for $400 in a Nashville pawnshop in 1993 because of the great neck. The body got smashed while travelling in Europe and was replaced by a knock-off Jimmy Page style 1958 body which makes it a bit smaller and lighter than a custom. The bridge pickup was replaced with a DiMarzio Super 3, just like Phil Collen’s Jacksons. It was also used in place of a spotlight for the 1992 “Adrenalize” tour.
Airbourne frontman Joel O’Keeffe’s sick-as-hell white Gibson Explorer. Bought in 2005, he’s replaced the volume knob with a beer bottle cap for a better grip. This thing just screams dirty rock and roll.
One of my all time favourite bands is The Maine, and this is Kennedy Brock with his absolutely stunning Duo Sonic. Painted with his guitar tech Adam Gable, and bridge pickup swapped with a JB junior, this guitar can definitely sound meaner than it looks!
This is Rick Nielsen’s VERY functional and efficient 1981 Hamer Five-Neck. This guitar has been in various museums but now lives on the wall at “Piece”, his restaurant in Chicago. It was created out of necessity, when he would strap on up to five different guitars during a song, and throw them away one after the other when he was done using them. It is made of five double-cutaway Hamer Special bodies, which were then laminated together and sanded between the necks. Rest assured, this is no Cheap Trick.
Pete Townshend of The Who played the FUCK outta this 1967 Gibson SG Special. He used Specials from the early 70′s to the early 80′s and smashed a ton of them. This one was used for their first live album, “The Who, Live At Leeds” in 1970. He liked SG Specials due to the light weight of the neck, which made it possible for him to pull back on it and affect the vibrato. He always tuned a bit flat for this reason.
Never thought I’d post one of my own guitars, but here we are! This is a 1969 Gibson SG Special that came to me for a complete bargain last week. It is truly a magnificent instrument and I couldn’t be happier with it. Beat to hell and full of mojo, I am one lucky boy. I’ve recently swapped out the bridge to something with adjustable saddles, and some more appropriate tuners have been ordered and are on the way!
It’s a very sad day in Rock n Roll history due to the passing of Malcolm Young. The much loved, much praised rhythm guitarist of AC/DC. The solid as a rock foundation AC/DC was built upon and the crux of a band that has put the love for Rock n Roll in the hearts of millions. Malcolm, job well done. My personal hero, Angus Young, with his 1967 Gibson SG. He’s had this since 1977′s Let There Be Rock, and it was his #1 guitar during AC/DC’s most recent tour with Axl Rose. I owe a huge amount of my love for rock and roll to Angus, and this guitar is an invaluable tool that I thank for its valiant help.
The timeless 1954 Fender Telecaster, Keith Richards’ “ Micawber “. Gifted to him on his 27th birthday in 1971 by Eric Clapton, this guitar has been a huge part of the Rolling Stones’ journey. Shortly after their 1972 tour, the neck pickup was replaced with a backwards 50′s Gibson PAF to give it a bit more bite.
Meet “Floyd”, Billie Joe Armstrong’s 1956 Les Paul Junior. “I could tell right away it was special. At the time I was playing mostly Fenders and this Jr. was a completely different guitar from anything I had played before.“ It was bought at a guitar show in San Rafael in 2000, just before the recording of “Warning”.
When I think “The Darkness” I think of huge Les Paul Customs. Justin Hawkins gets such a great tone out of this beautiful, classic, white 2001 LPC. Don’t worry about breaking a string either, he’s get his 2nd White 2001 LPC ready and waiting! Their latest album is one of my favourite guitar albums out at all recently. Justin and Dan are among the great brothers guitar duos in my book.
Matt Hoopes’ 1973 Fender Telecaster Deluxe. Tele deluxes are so interesting, in their sound and look. DOPE Wide range humbuckers designed by Seth Lover, DOPE Strat headstock, and DOPE chimey, clear, bright, aggressive tones. Relient K is also pretty DOPE. I love the finish on this one, too. (I like 335′s too, Matty T!)
Johnny Marr playing his gorgeous 1959 Gibson ES-355 with The Smiths. “I suggested that if I signed with Sire he should buy me a guitar. We signed the contract on January 2, 1984, and true to his word, Seymour took me down to We Buy Guitars on 48th and bought me the 1959 Gibson 355. I took it back to the Iroquois Hotel and wrote "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and "Girl Afraid". It became my main guitar for quite a while, and I'm told it inspired Bernard Butler and Noel Gallagher to get buy one of their own. It's still one of my favorites." One of my favourites too, I fucking adore this guitar.
Paul Stanley’s dope-ass Custom Hamer Vector which he got in 1981. For this 1983 tour he re-finished it from it’s original white finish to this striking zebra pattern. Nice job, Paul.
Mick Ronson with David Bowie and his gorgeous 1968 Les Paul Custom. Originally it was black, but Mick stripped the top down to the bitching-as-hell wood to get a bit more high-end, which was also the reason he removed the pickup covers.
Jimi Hendrix and his beautiful Monterey Strat, Well known for being set on fire at the 1967 Monterey Pop festival.
Ozzy Osbourne lifting Randy Rhodes with his 1979 Flying V made by Karl Sandoval. It had a Dimarzio PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge.
