Sirivannavari Fall Winter 2025-26
The Wedding Dress
Update The 2nd - I debated putting this in the original post but honestly its getting way too long so new post!
I have blocked the skirt! And she was big, measuring about 1.95 - 2m in diameter:
Yes, that is hanging on the wall in my halfway - that was the only place I could leave her safely away from my toddler for the 3 days it took to dry. I'm am still working out a way of blocking the bodice and hanging the entire thing back up to dry without the weight of the skirt dragging everything down while it's damp. Most likely i'll stuff the skirt into a laundry bag and suspend it underneath somehow. Previously the skirt hit me right under the knee but post-blocking it sits low to mid-calf length:
I have yet to finish the underdress, it's happening, I'm just really not keen on cutting pattern pieces recently.

So I remembered seeing the photo on the bottom right before, and it took me awhile to track down the source: it's a reconstruction of horse ornaments from the Siberian Pazyryk burials, which were Iron Age Scythian. Deer mask from the burials:
The photo was taken at the Hungarian tribal gathering at KurultĂĄj, 2012. (The festival looks AMAZING.)
Another one from 2010:
You're not immune to being the bully btw. You're not immune to being in the wrong
"But i'm-" there is no identity or state of being that makes you immune to hurting someone. You can be convinced that you are in the right for doing so. You can be convinced that you're defending someone by doing so. You have always got to examine if you're taking pleasure in hurting someone or if you're actually doing something good.
[Image text: there's actually no political label or identity that absolves you of doing harm.]

I think one big reason why we don't consider the stars as important as before (not even pop-astrology anymore cares about the stars or the sky on itself, just the signs deprived of context) is because of light pollution.
For most of human history the sky looked between 1-3, 4 at most. And then all of a sudden with electrification it was gone (I'm lucky if I get 6 in my small city). The first time I saw the Milky Way fully as a kid was a spiritual experience, I was almost scared on how BRIGHT it was, it felt like someone was looking back at me. You don't get that at all with modern light pollution.
When most people talk about stargazing nowadays they think about watching about a couple of bright dots. The stars are really, really not like that. The unpolluted night sky is a festival of fireworks. There is nothing like it.
Laughing Buddhas From The Flying Peak
Vivid figures of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas carved in the rock on the Flying Peak, Feilai Feng (éŁäŸćł°çłçȘ) in the Wulin Mountains (æŠæć±±), Zhejiang.
Their cheerfulness in no way contradicts the solemn and misty ambiance of the Feilai Feng Grottoes themselves. Limestone peak looks alien in the surrounding mountain landscape, so there is an opinion that it flew here by the power of Buddhist wonder-workers. The main cave is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Guanyin. Due to a natural crack in the ceiling, a radiant halo surrounds the statue.
The carvings are from different periods and date from the Tang to the Ming.

A spoon's only objective in life is to make soup go upwards, and it knows this. That's why when you put one under a running tap it blasts the water way high. The spoon thinks there's suddenly TONS of soup to deal with and it freaks out.

The fact this isn't a painting is a testament to one of the greatest feats of set design and production I've ever seen.
My god just look at this! The lighting, set design, photography... I've just never seen anything like it.
I think this is the first time I've ever been wowed by "this ISN'T a painting"!
my therapist: so how are you doing today?

So about five hundred million years ago, give or take, there was this little creature called Plectronoceras. It was about 2 cm long â just
But then around 30 million years ago â halfway through the Age of Mammals, give or take â something happened. The nautiloids started disappearing. Fewer species, less diversity. Bit by bit they shrank back into their current small range. What happened halfway through the Age of Mammals? Well, hereâs one clue: the nautiloidsâ long retreat showed a pattern. It wasnât everywhere and all at once. They disappeared first in the northern arctic regions; then in the Antarctic; then in temperate zones; finally across most of the tropics except that one small patch. This pattern suggested a culprit: a warm-blooded predator that evolved in the Arctic and then spread around the world. But⊠the armored cephalopod design had been around forever. Theyâd been living with predators for half a billion years. Sharks. Primitive armored fish. Not-so-primitive modern fish. In the age of dinosaurs, they had to deal with ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and mosasaurs. Back in the Paleozoic, they were hunted by eight-foot-long giant sea scorpions. Way back in the Cambrian, they had to live with the anomalocariids. In the early Age of Mammals, there were primitive whales and sea-going crocodiles. The armored cephalopod design took them all in stride and kept going. So what happened?
obsessed with this photo. the face of a slurper
The ability of mammals to create vacuum chambers in their mouth -- universal due to the necessity of sucking milk during infancy -- is a very useful, and very unappreciated one. Something as simple as sipping water from a cup would be impossible if not for all the layers of soft, wriggly flesh built on top of our jaws.
I recall some book recounting how mammals turned their face inside-out during our evolution in the latest Paleozoic -- reptiles and bird mostly have their head and jaw muscle inside their skulls, mammals mostly have them outside. This also allows us to have complex facial expressions, which are vital for mammalian communication, and only exist because of milk.
Mind blown.
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. Sheâs 5âČ 11âł and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and itâs difficult to find natural fiber clothes that arenât made of cotton
c. Sheâs a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked âSo where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isnât polyesterâ and mom was like âgo ask your sisterâ
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like âGET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR Uâ and honestly Iâm thrilled about this
âWhere did u get all thisâ
âBets, u know Iâm a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internetâ
âoh yeah truâ

I donât know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when Iâm watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(Iâve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what Iâd go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesnât specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
For wools, I cannot recommend Woolsome enough! Theyâre a bit more expensive then the above links, but they have a spectacular range of colours and weights, as well as diamond pattern and herringbone weaves. They also have a range of linens, though not as extensive.
