This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.

This homeless person is making me uncomfortable. Should I call [a man with a gun]?

My neighbor is having a loud party. Should I get [a man with a gun] involved?

There are some teenagers skateboarding. Do you think [a man with a gun] would get rid of them for me?

It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.

I said “kinda?” because of the price and some of the circumstances. Like, my school district had a policy where, if a parent had a student with difficulties they could go to the school and make a request for a diagnosis and the school would be obligated to have the child evaluated by an independent party that worked with the school.

I saw a few of them because of my academic and social difficulties and was evaluated annually for a while, but my parents never made the official request for a diagnosis. The reason they never made the request for a diagnosis was because a) my father didn’t want a neurodivergent child/child with a mental disability, and b) my mum wasn’t impressed with how the district responded to diagnosed kids (long story but I had a bully with a diagnosed mental disability and that diagnosis was one of the two factors that let him get away with nearly everything).

Unfortunately, by the time I was old enough to understand and have any sort of say that either of my parents would listen to and my mum was in a position to request a diagnosis without my father’s input, the school decided I was old enough and doing well enough (lies) to not need either the diagnosis or accommodations, so they refused to provide the resources.

We ended up needing to go through the whole process independently of the school, and while insurance did cover it the copay was still $500 and it took months for the evaluation report and list of diagnoses to come in.

But hey, still got my official diagnosis in the end (autism, adhd, gender dysphoria and a few other things), and I got it before COVID hit.

This is a good post, but it stil misses the point by a tiiiiiiny margin.

The proper response of the creative person shouldn't be "please respect my story/vision" it should be "please respect me and my position as the paid professional in this relationship."

New fans don't know this - and I entirely blame the immediacy of communication of socmedia - but creators of media tended to keep the fans at arm's length because of a very real legal risk that listening to the headcanons, etc could result in.

The best solution, unfortunately, is for the creators to raise up some barriers between them and the fans.
