there is no useful difference between analytical ai and generative ai, it is basically a marketing gimmick that some guys in a room came up with to get people to stop shitting their pants about ai, technologically they are almost always based on the same systems. you are idiots buying into a moral panic. please do like one iota of research before coming into the menchies of a ML researcher. jesus h. christ

it is not that the cancer ai doesn't exist, it is that the same mechanisms that enable the cancer ai to be better at detecting cancer are the mechanisms that enable image generation ais to be good at image generation. information output *is* generative. it's all one big machine.

it's more just there's no real distinction between the two, they are functionally built off the same advances in statistics and technology. but sure, if you think of generative ai as "the bad one", you can use that framing.

f-list, if you are not aware, has made a recent decision that they'd like to store all your chat logs on their servers in the notoriously porn friendly state of... Arizona? unencrypted and in plaintext. when people pushed back against this, they said "okay we'll walk it back. here are five options we can do instead" but none of those options were "don't store our shit".

as the sort of paranoiac who has a gun ready to shoot my printer if it makes a funny sound without my permission (this is a joke), this was unacceptable.

so, over the past three weeks i made carrion. it is a chat platform for adult roleplay. we store absolutely nothing outside of profile data. everything is all in ram and we use clever programming tricks to get around several of the obvious limitations this would cause. we are being serviced by a privacy-focused hosting provider in iceland. god forbid we ever get subpoenad because simpsons porn becomes illegal, there is literally nothing on our servers for them to grab.

there are also some cool features beyond just the privacy angle. cherubplay style ephemeral chat ads instead of spamming the chatroom with "please roleplay with me"s. flexible character profiles (with optional myspace level of customization should you have the gumption to master html) with flexible kinks. chat that should in theory Just Work.

also, because this is a solo project i rule over with an iron fist i can guarantee zero enshittification. i will make a platform that works functionally, has all the features it needs, and then stop adding more shit and just host it until it stops being used. aren't you tired of constant discord updates? don't you miss usable, functional, peer to peer websites?

The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening again—not to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.

It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.

Because it’s never just one person’s fault. And even when it is, it still isn’t.

The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. the only good tv show podcast is Stitches in Time, the show where they rewatch doctor who "in chronological order" one clip at a time so a typical episode is one where they talk about twenty seconds from a zoom reunion episode

I like accidentally stumbled into this podcast one day from searching youtube for something completely different and it's literally the best idea ever for a doctor who podcast (or a podcast about any tv show for that matter) and somehow these youtube uploads only get like 20 views each? they've had more guests on this show than some episodes have views like are you kidding me. she spent 12 years editing all of doctor who into chronological order

basically what I'm saying is you gotta watch this show now before it gets enough attention for the bbc to shut down stitchesinti.me for hosting. the entirety of doctor who, in a format that's definitely a different enough experience that it ought to count as fair use but someone with expensive enough lawyers could just shut it down anyway if they know about it. so like there's an expiration date for this show
