friendly reminder that most of these boys are not only rich and white, but they’re generally undereducated as well. like i know yall want to act like people should just “know better” because that’s easier, but i can tell you from personal experience, raised conservative by two conservative parents, that it was not until i went to college that i was even exposed to liberal ideas, much less chose to adopt them. so many of these boys grow up in rural american or canadian towns and focus completely on hockey, their education is never a focus unless they are one of the few who want to go the ncaa route. yeah, there are morality issues that peoole should just know (or be taught by their parents) but truly what in gods names did you expect from undereducated rich white men???

I understand that this post is well-intentioned, but I think it’s important that we remember it is a privilege to be undereducated on issues of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other injustices. Many people don’t have a choice to ‘not know’ because they are forced to experience the consequences of other people’s lack of education. We also need to recognize that it’s often not simply a lack of education, but instead self-righteousness, willful hatred, and apathy.

These players all have the ability to choose to educate themselves. We are surrounded by people who are speaking about their experiences and who are making massive efforts to educate people on injustices. If these players don’t know, it’s because they’re choosing not to listen. And if the problem is that they only spend time with other wealthy, white conservatives, than that is still a choice they are making. They can listen better, ask more questions, and make efforts to meet different people with different expiernces. They are not lacking resources. We can not allow them to use ignorance as an excuse, especially when they have such large platform to spread their ignorance through.

hey everyone. i’ve been thinking all day and i’m just really sad. it’s so unbelievably hard to see people i love be driven out of this place. i love it here 99% of the time but it’s days like this that dishearten me so much.

so what i want to say is just be nice. if you see something you don’t agree with, just swipe. you don’t have to agree with everything someone says. people have different opinions and that’s okay, that’s literally how life works. it’s basic human decency to treat others with respect and i don’t know what it is about hiding behind anon that makes people forget that. there are real life people behind these blogs that feel your words and it’s exhausting. i’m literally begging you to just be nice. hockeyblr should not be such a toxic place.
